"Bingo. Listen to Rio and then listen to something 81 or before and tell me Ronnie had a great night in Rio. Go ahead - make my day"
Agreed---StonesTod. I have heard people talk disparagingly about Ronnie's playing on the '78 tour and granted there were some mistakes being made, but there was also some real good guitar playing that had an energy in addition to techinical ability that is vastly more enjoyable then what we get now. No "sticky fingers" as guitar players sometimes call it.
MoJO magazine put it very well---"a Stones concert these days is a GREAT nite out but nothing you are going to want to relive on tape on a regular basis." I agree with that statement.
However, I can go back to '75 or '78 shows and still feel that the playing completely holds up--especially '78 because it was more stripped down--no horns and even better no Billy Preston, plus they knew they had just released a killer record (though I love AB
