Ronnie on Start Me Up in Rio

OK, I have followed the show thru three times. Each time it becomes less choppy. But all three times when Ron steps up to paly the solo in SMU I have lost picture and sound. Has any buddy heard it? I see praises of the YCAGWUW solo. What about SMU. I ama Ron supporter, but to be honets, about half the time he plays this it is just painful to my ears.

I thought it was solid, not exceptional... Chicago U.C. II was exceptional.

I agree with Born on The Bayou (btw--what a great great tune that is) it was
solid, not the best of the tour and far from the worst. Actually it reminded me
alot of the super bowl version which I thought was good.

It was better than average 2005 ron, but he still did the cartoon-style bends. I don't know how that solo became such a spotlight for him. On the record, it's more of a typical stones ensemble instrumental passage.

They didn't even play a solo on it live untill '89. I think it's a highlight in the show, if done good.

The studio version, which is my favorite, Keith and
Ronnie are really "weaving" and consequently the solo
does not seem as "stand alone" as it does now. imo

Yes. The "stand alone" solo, at least as ron does it now, seems like something angus young or somebody goofy like that would do.

Angus Young is able to play the guitar, Ron isn't. That's the difference.

Sorry, but seldom I heard such a bad sounding solo, boring, bump notes, pure musical nonsense ...

I watched YCAGWYW and again I cant for the life of me figure out how Ron was on fire.He plays few notes and relies as always playing octaves to occupy his time
and space on the fretboard. If Ron Wood was on fire then Mick Taylor TORCHED his
solos on YCAGWYW.

explain a bit more openG. Did you liked the solo or not? I can't figure it out.

Its not a single note solo, its more just rhythm and occupying space and time for
the moment. So I guess I did not think the solo was anything to rave about.

Ok i see. You are right about the fact it's not a single not solo. I like the solo, i only heard twice but i thought i sueded the song very well so therefore i thought it was a good solo.

Funny how poeple can have a totally different taste in the same music!

Cheers,

Ronnie had a good night for latter-day Ronnie.

I think that we are all so used to those cringe-worthy moments from Ronnie that the rare times he doesnt completely botch the solo it sounds great!

To these ears, Ronnie's solos were adequate in Rio, a step up for him, but certainly not great. His interplay with Keith was better, I particularly enjoyed his work on Midnight Rambler. The boys nailed that one...my favorite version since 75 at least!

SMU was messed up. I wonder if it will be fixed by the time it hits the theaters?

That is so very true. The best respond is usually "he nailed it!"

I watched the Rio video for the first time last night and I don't see how the other Stones put up with Ronnies solo's these days. I think they need to hire a guitar tutor for Ronnie and make him practice 1-2 hours evey day until he shapes up. I think his playing is a REAL detriment to the band at the moment. The rest of the band seems to be hitting on all cylinders, but , not Ronnie.

I ain't stupid, I'm just guitarded.

Well put. I thought my this tour stds it was ok, but the
fact of the matter is that is REALLY faint praise. Also agree with
Open-G regarding YCAGWYW---what std are others employing to call
that "great"? My goodness, how about "barely passable" or "not as embarrassing
as some other nites"?

And for those who think his solo on the Love You Live version is "childish". I still do not know what that means, but that version to my ears is light yrs away from what we get on this tour.

Bingo. Listen to Rio and then listen to something 81 or before and tell me Ronnie had a great night in Rio. Go ahead - make my day!

"Bingo. Listen to Rio and then listen to something 81 or before and tell me Ronnie had a great night in Rio. Go ahead - make my day"

Agreed---StonesTod. I have heard people talk disparagingly about Ronnie's playing on the '78 tour and granted there were some mistakes being made, but there was also some real good guitar playing that had an energy in addition to techinical ability that is vastly more enjoyable then what we get now. No "sticky fingers" as guitar players sometimes call it.

MoJO magazine put it very well---"a Stones concert these days is a GREAT nite out but nothing you are going to want to relive on tape on a regular basis." I agree with that statement.

However, I can go back to '75 or '78 shows and still feel that the playing completely holds up--especially '78 because it was more stripped down--no horns and even better no Billy Preston, plus they knew they had just released a killer record (though I love ABcool smiley.

playing average or playing not to make mistakes is okay with the rolling stones machine as long as the cash rolls in.

You could actually snooze off for a bit when Mr Wood plays his firey solos.

It is sad when "didn't completely f*ck it up" constitutes a "great night"!

I guess that solo was about fine, but a bit shaky. He @#$%& it up on the last three notes, that wasn`t necessary. Since Ron joined in 1974, we are obliged to enjoy the better part of his performance, and rejoice when he succeeds. I love him. The Stones are the only big-time rock band in the world where the lead guitar player gives you the creeps, you get on your knees and pray ("The Who") that he might get througt it without screaming bum notes. Otherwise, a great musician. Have him play steel guitar and, ok, not another MT discussion.

He played as well as or better than Keith. Also he is no more the lead guitarist than Keith. Some people still don't realize that he was not hired to be Mick Taylor's replacement but Brian's replacement. He was more on par with Keith, a great rythmn player that can still pull out some decent leads.

I though the show was great. Ronnie played well and made the show fun. He leads are better that Keiths IMO.

Heard the solo, too, many times. I agree with OpenG. A boring series of notes without any sense. If I compare that to Ronnies solos on the same song during the 75/76 tour, then I can't believe that it is the same musician who played in Rio.

If it is so painful why do you listen to it?
