Yeah Elvis was the rock and roll torchbearer (if maybe not the first rock and roller...that award goes to Ike Turner)

I love the Live in Las Vegas boxset. It is fun listening to him in action. The Sun Sessions are classic of course but I prefer the Fat Elvis quite a lot. The RCA box is sick too. On vinyl I particularly love his "Elvis Gold Records Vol. 3" in mono of course!!! :smiling smiley)

Nice Elvis thread!
I remember this really great Elvis song that went like this....
"working on a T-bone-steak a' la carte....California on my mind....Los Angeles, Norfolk, Virginia.....'cross Caroline."
Somebody remember the title? I listened to it several times at a friends house, but I never could find that one myself....
I loved that song.

(Leonard, my letter is in the mail too.
There's something for you to keep, and something I would like you to send back, so I'm sorry you'll have to send a package twice....)

"Promised Land", written by Chuck Berry. Recorded by Elvis in late '73 and released as a single and the title track of the album of the same name just over a year later. Great version too, one of my personal favourites

agree with every word of that. For anyone who's never heard Elvis' version of "Stranger in my hometown" from those sessions, do yourself a favour and get it. An incredible performance. Suspicious Minds, In The Ghetto, Wearin That Loved-On Look, Gentle On My Mind and The Power of My Love from those sessions arent too bad either!!! An incredibly prolific few weeks. "From Elvis In Memphis" could well be one of his greatest albums

Another period that I think is often underrated is the couple of years from after he left the army in 1960 until about 1962 when the non-soundtrack work got shamefully pushed to the side. Theres some amazing stuff from that era, none better than "Elvis is Back", the album he cut within days of returning from military service. Probably the greatest album of his career, not least because it contains the fabulous "Reconsider Baby", proof positive that Elvis could sing the blues as magnificently as almost anyone.

Elvis was the real deal. The beginning, middle and end for me. He had more natural charisma than any performer ever. And yes that includes Sinatra, Jagger, Springsteen, Bono and anyone else you want to throw in there. Unfortunately, he was the guinea pig in the experiment as to what happens when mass adulation is thrust upon a person born of humble means. Rock stars and movie stars have better dealt with such adulation since witnessing what it did to the King.

He had an amazing, amazing group, infact Scotty Moore who is a good friend with keiths was backstage in memphis with him, he looks great but has lost most of his hearing

.....keep on rolling.....

I really love him. Remember VERY clearly being 12 years old and watching TV at my OMA and OPA's house and have a news report in the middle of ALL MY CHILDREN saying that Elvis had died! Didn't buy much of his stuff till the last few years but his ROCK music is GREAT. Recently got his singles collection.

On Dec 2nd 2005, I visited Graceland for the first time.Very Surreal. The next day my wife and I visited Sun Studios, Stax,& The Rock and Roll Museum. Stroll around Beale Street and hang out at the Peabody Motel. That evening we saw a group from England called the Rolling Stones. Memphis! Wow what a great place to visit for music lovers. After we got home, I found myself dragging out all my old Elvis LPs. Went out and bought "Last Train to Memphis". Leonard Keringer could not have said it better, This is the best book on Elvis's early days. Plan to read "Careless Love" next. Hard to believe the way his life turned out. Seems as if he was consumed by his own legend.

mick and boys get "shit" because of the drugs(esp. Keith) but yet Elvis is like the most celebrated drug addict in America/elsewhere? I just never understood that part of it.

Hey Rainhog, Elvis never took drugs, he was certified as a DEA agent by Nixon. No agent would break the law would they? Banana and Peanut Butter fried sandwitches notwithstanding!

Fantastic performer. Love his acoustic set from the 68 comeback special.
What a great band he had from The Vegas years on as well.

I saw Elvis the concert in '99. James Burton , Ronnie Tutt & the great man on a giant screen the show was pure magic.

I "like" his films as well because they are so crappy I guess.

True! I also really like non-album tracks from that period, like Little Sister, His Latest Flame and the amazing I Feel So Bad!

"From Elvis Presley Boulevard" is a great album. Recorded at Graceland, at a time when he
was tired of Rock'n'Roll, containing only songs that touched him personally.

Btw, live he still had to play Satisfaction ... eh ... Hound Dog in 1977. The audience demanded
that. He played it in a manner that showed that he was not very excited about it any more
(slow version, with jokes, etc).

I love EP. He's one of the best. Great stuff from the fifties, not so good (for the most part) in the sixties), and then again some good stuff in the seventies (Also lots of sucky things there). Promised Land is the best he ever did with his band from the 70s. Check out that guitar player.

69 sessions is one the best stuff I've ever heard in my life.
Minds, ghetto, Kentucky, limousine, loved-on look...

I don't know why, but love fat Elvis basically.
I never get tired of watching DVDs of fat Elvis singing Bridge over troubled waters, An americanTrilogy...

It kinds of hipnotizes me.

I don't appreciate the 50's and early 60's material, although I respect it for its historical value.

The real thing for me starts with the Comeback Special.
