OT: Your Favorite "relatively unknown" Bands

"THE EASTERN DARK" (late '80's Australian band)....heavily influence by the Ramones, but had their own sound....only had an ep and a 45 then the singer was killed in a car wreck................"DMZ" (late '70s, Boston-based band)an excellent Stooges-type band.........."THE SWINGIN' NECKBREAKERS" (from New Jersey)....punked-up rhythm'n'blues and raunch'n'roll......."THE DETROIT COBRAS"...all covers with a punk-edge: Irma Thomas, Otis Redding, rhythm'n'blues covers, 60s garage covers.........the singer sounds like Irma Thomas.....THE SONICS..(60s pacific northwest band)....sounded like a punkier mid-60s Stones with raw/raunch production...the singer had a great set of howlin' pipes......."THE PAGANS" (late '70s Cleveland punk band)...."THE MIGHTY CAESARS" (British garage-punk band led by Billy Childish)a hybrid of Link Wray, The Sex Pistols, the early Kinks, Chuck Berry, The Clash, Bo Diddley......lo-fi raunch.....'THE ORIGINAL SINS" (late '80s band from Pennsylvania)....psychedelic, velvet underground influences....excellent songwriting........."THE MONKS" (a '60's u.s. band, based in Germany)....strange is the first word that comes to mind....a 60s punk band with a banjo player and some punky lyrics "I Hate You Baby", etc....gotta hear it for yourself...they shaved their heads & dressed like real monks, and some of their fans also dressed-up like monks...."JONATHAN RICHMAN & THE MODERN LOVERS" (U.S. east coast band - mid-to late '70's)heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground...their first lp is by far the best......they penned "Roadrunner" which was covered by the Sex Pistols on the "Rock'N'Roll Swindle" lp...solid lp

I'm really into Tinsley Ellis, a bluesman from Atlanta, formerly of the Heartfixers. He records for Alligator Records, if you'd like to follow the lead of Mick and order some blues from Chicago. LK, he comes to Cali on a regular basis. Check him out if you can.

Don't know if they're "relatively unknown" or not, but up here in Canada we've got a band called Sloan who are pretty good. Actually, they opened for the Stones in Boston I believe. Another good rockin' band is Sam Roberts. Both worth checking out IMO. smiling smiley

Cool Leonard, met Kim and the Pandoras once at a record store in Columbia Mo. Absolutely loved their outfits and look! "In and Out of My Life In a Day" has long been my theme song (along with "I Can't Get No Sat.") !! hahaha!!

Yeah, they're very good! I've met the vocalists, and we talked for an hour or so. He really digs Bob Dylan, and other great musicians. I gave him a recording of the Dylan-Oslo-2002 show, on tape, the next time we met. Friendly guy.

Hey dennysmith61 thats my favourite band too! Shang a Lang was probably the first record I ever bought, the next was Blitzkrieg Bop, actually they don't sound that different smiling smiley

I love Eastern Dark, I met the bass player at a Rollins Band gig in Sydney many years ago, nice guy and a mine of rock n roll info. Radio Birdman were (are still) a good band, but how they are worshipped by the indie crowd in Australia is over the top. The Saints were for me the classic Australian band.

Madrugada are a fine band, i've seen them 3 times, the last time I was standing next to a beautiful women, it took a while to dawn on me but then I realised it was Martina Hingis (ex world top tennis player)

To this list I would I would like to add the fantastic but almost forgotten Gun Club and another Aussie band The Scientists, the Sub Pop compilation of their stuff is really to be recommended. And also Frank Black his recent records are all cool.

"Too old to rock n roll, too young to die" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

friggin-A right!......they could drink almost anybody under the table....except for one night when the singer/bassplayer Ross passed-out on the snowy sidewalks of Wisconsin and cracked his noggin' open....it was tough for a little shrimp like me to pick him up off the ground, but i managed

Leonard, I heard some samples of them on amazon and am quickly buying up their catalog. There is a live cd from 89 but very expensive (60$). Do you have it and is it worth the $ ? Thanks!
