Every now and then I pick up my acoustic and write chord progressions that have that 70's feel and sound of the stones trying to capture that beggars banquet feel and sound with open tunings and chord walkdowns and hammers.Coming up with 3 chords, a chorus usually inverting the chords and a bridge is not difficult to do for most of us.Whats hard is the motivation to sit down and write stuff most of the world will never hear.Yes the glimmers did this also with simple chord progressions and arrangements and were motivated financially to do this because they were a rock band their chosen career.Looking back did they ever write a great MELODY.Write now I can only think of one YCAGWYW which was a nice chord progression for the most part. Most of their great melodies were created by either stones band members or other studio musicians - For example Nicky Hopkins on piano on Angie,or Brian Jones on Rubey Tuesday,or Mick Taylor's guitar lines with all his studio contributions. Keith and MJ were great at writing riffs and simple chord progressions. There melodies IMO were far behind what the Beatles wrote. So if a artist is not motivated to sell alot of records like Mick Taylor then his motivation to record new records is not his chosen path.I think that MT choose to collaborate with artists after he left the stones vs to form a super group which failed when he teamed up with Jack Bruce. Also taylor's herion addiction lasted longer then keith's(not saying it was worser just that he kicked the habbit in the early 90's where keith cleaned up by 1979 of 1980.
Also why write alot of filler songs if they are not good material.Thestones put out alot of filler material since 1981 because they had to put out records and did not write great records along the way.Taylor most likely would only put out good material he was pleased with because he was not tied down to any record company demands and deadlines.
So when we compare taylor as a solo artist to a band like the stones you have to understand the motivation behind someones career path and what they want to do as a artist or rock band.
I do not think Taylor today would want to join the stones he would be bored but I can see him doing a guest spot with wyman down the road.
thanks I had to think long and hard about the whole censorship thing and found out my love of music is more imortant than PETTY arguments and INTERPERTATIONS of someones THOUGHTS IN SPACE That violate someones true feelings
keith always started with a riff or chord progression and jagger sat down and wrote alot of stuff on acoustic in the early days - the melodies were secondary
I understand that my point was Taylor's melody or nicky hopkins in the studio or another guest player sure enriched the groove and thats what I like a combination of groove and melody.look what taylor did live with the stones.
listen to Dancing With Mr D from brussels as a example.
His bluesy guitar lines sure take the chord progression and riff to another level.it was a great brilliant addition to the band
One of the greatest thing in Stones music is that Mick's singing and melodies are the part of the groove and not just 'there is the music and there is the singer.'
Let's see. I get in my car. I'm looking for a cd to drop in the player. What's it going to be? The Greatest Rock n Roll Band in the world or Mick Taylor? Oh, wait a minute, I don't have any Mick Taylor! Things that make your go "Hmmm".
I'm very pleased and happy that our fave member OpenG is back again after having settled a delicate matter with BV. I'll have some mint julep to celebrate the return of OpenG and future threads on the supremacy of Mick Taylor. The Vibrato lives......
It's great to see you back OpenG although you're still wrong LOL. I can without trying too hard think of many strong melodies that stand on their own:'Moonlight Mile Waiting On A Friend Yesterday's papers Ride On Baby Loving Cup (the bridge ALONE) Hand of Fate Rocks Off (that is what makes this song so incredibel) Torn and Frayed Back Street Girl She Smiled Sweetly Angie Wanna Hold You Slipping Away
Could go on and on, I think
"...no longer shall you trudge 'cross my peaceful mind."
Great melodies right from the start. For example: Tell me As tears go by Blue turns to grey Heart of Stone I'm free I am waiting Out of time Ruby Tuesday
