Street Fighting Man - Best Live version?
Posted by: Tops ()

I like the way they play it on GYYYO. But it's the only song i'm not really happy about on the Brussels Affair.

I did like it on the voodoolounge tour. but wasnt that happy with the Live Licksversion.

Havent heard the versions from 75/76, 78 or 81(did they played it in 81?)

Until Europe 95 Ronnie played the intro.

In Europe Keith took over and it was louder and harder than before.

How did it sound in '81? Hopefully better than '78!

Thought it was awful in '90 (soundwise - nothing to do with the whole Mick/dog testicles thing) but seemed to be reborn on Stripped and has been great ever since then. I'd rank the versions from Sripped and Licks up there with Ya-Yas and '72/'73 - nowhere near as chaotic, but still very powerful.

yeah i love the way that giant hide-shredding machine crashes past all in flames -
"is everybody having a good time?" :E

the 95 versions i heard were mighty spectacular too - it felt like we were being slammed to our knees, my that was *strong!*

Ya Yas gets it hands down....The Acetate version is even better. For the best official version, gotta have the Mobile Fidelity LP version...even better is the 7.5 IPS Reel to Reel tape!

Do you have this version? Didn't think SFM was played there.

The Brussels 73 version is gives me goosebumps! If ever anyone wanted to hear how weak the guitars are nowadays compared to back then they should listen to this! Pure Rock and Roll..

Love the Licks version myself, particularly on B-stage.

Four Flicks version from Madison Square Garden and of course the rendition as it appears on Ya-Ya's.

Some licks versions weren't that bad. Keith did play it well, and knew where the changes were (when mick told him, or stood next to him -> you can see that on the FF stadium disc)

Of course SFM was best with Mick Taylor. And it was really dull in 89/90. In 95 though (perhaps 94) it got new life again. The Stripped version is great.
Neverthless, I really dig the Paris 1976 version, especially the beginning, with Micks wild singing. But at the end of the song, I miss Mick Taylor a bit.

ahh but there's a decades-long tradition of Mick hovering by Keith during SFM -
it's a fine intense moment that i love to see.

You're right with sssoul. Mick is never so focused on Keith's playing as he was in SFM in the 70s. I think it's Paris 76 that he stares at the guitar, paying great attention, right before he starts to sing. With the back towards the audience, and then turn around and shout out the 1st verse. (or was it NY72?)That's cool!

Erik, i recall it from footage from 72, 73, 75 and 76 (including Knebworth). yayy, now i have to go back and check 69 as well.
it's just one of them Glimmer Things they do, and ain't it fine?!

"What do you want - what?!"

I love the version of SFM on Brussels Affair (= Europe '73) - from London, September 9, 1973. The opening is so tough, so hard, and towards the end, Keith & Mick T. just let themselves go. No other band comes close!

I prefer 1973 and 2003 (i mean Twicks, Stade De France, etc) versions.

Brussels 73 is incredible. As was Ladies & Gents from 72. The ending to those songs (and shows) is unbelievable. Keef and MT are going nuts.

The worst version is that horrible encore from NJ 1978. I actually listen to it on the way home from work. I sounds like a drunken garage band..........Mick is awful.

don't give me that ole one two, one two three four

There are quite a few good live versions of this song.Boulder '81 was not the best.Top of the list are Europe '73 and '02/'03.Loved it on the b-stage.Houston 1998 was good also.I hope that we haven't heard the last of it live.It seems to be losing its warhorse status. In my opinion Honkey Tonk Women,Tumbling Dice,IORR,& Miss You should be the top candidates for a rest if there is another tour.Give at least one or two of those a break and bring back Street Fighting Man.

What thing is that?

The Brussels version is great! The only song where the Stones start really getting into some noise. This could have been an interesting direction to take taylor in, instead of the "soaring" snoozefests.

But I also like the NJ '78 version. mick sounds like he's on crack. And it's interesting that they change the beat to fit in with the new songs.
