Worst Lead Guitar Players- I can think of two right off the top of my head:

KISS- Ace Frehley
Motley Crue -Mick Mars

Lol...

What you don't understand is that John Frusciante is THE GUY to play guitar over Flea and Chad Smith's lines... You don't want a heavy-handed lead when u got Flea and Chad on rhythm... u need a guy who can play one eccentric guitar line after the other and there's nobody better than J.F... ANYONE would have taken the RHCP gig if they were offered... all the best young guitarists in the world would die for that slot.

AND, obviously, you never attended an RHCP gig because you would be blown outta your seat and sticking against the wall.

Frusciante is the right guitarist for that band.

How the &^%$# you have Mick Mars as a "worst" lead guitarist ?? Ever seen them this tour ??

Motley blows the entire arena up. and there's only 3 musicians... think Mick Mars doesn't have anything to do with their success ??

The peppers are responsible for the worst gig I have ever seen. And I've seen quite a few.
Incredible out of tune vocals, a bassplayer playing 3456 notes in a second (I hate 'musicians' like that), Fruciante in his own world, not listening to the other bandmembers. Only the drummer was alright.

Yeah, don't you DARE trash Born On The Bayou's beloved RHCP or he'll fly off the handle on you...

BOTB, why don't you let up on the third degree and go back to "dirty old man" threads about which concerts to find slutty young girls at? Not everyone has an encyclopedic memory for the date and time they last saw the Chili Peppers...

It was the tour for Californication.
When they played Belgium. I must say it was a festival (Pukkelpop), but still... I never seen a band suck like that.

After that gig they became the standard for aweful concerts for me and my friends (including some Peppers fans... not anymore though... after By The Way everyone that I know that once liked 'em, began to hate them when they released By The Way... and rightfully so... terrible album. And also the way they act... maybe appealing to 15 year olds... but I can't stand them anymore.)

Lol, if By The Way was so bad then why did they HEADLINE so many European FESTIVALS during the By The Way Tour ???

And why was the Live DVD filmed in front of only 80,000 screaming Europeans at Slane Castle ??

Too bad "you and your friends" weren't there....

The RHCP is incredibly popular in Europe... you should know that. If you look at the tour schedules you see they play Europe about as much as the States. Even when they were not on any official tour last year they still played many gigs in Europe in the summer.

Errrr... the quality of the latest cd has nothing to do with headlining.

If David Bowie releases the worst cd ever, he won't be opening festivals, but he will be headlining.

You don't have to like cd's because the band is headlining. The peppers are popular... but I don't like bands because they're popular. I like bands because they're good. Who gives a damn about popularity.
And they're popular with nearly only 15 year olds...

By the way is crap, period.

I liked them when I was a teenager (not so long ago). And I still consider BSSM & Californication as excellent albums. But they were never a good live band, always been one of the worst and Kiedis is the most responsible for that.

This post is made in disrespect. You may think you can play the guitar better, but that is not interesting here.

Some people feel they are better by beating up others. It's called the chicken picking law. It is a real law. Most animals live that way. By working hard on validating everyone and climbing to the top, trying to pick on others. Humans tend to use the same at times. Picking on others. I will not allow it. Show some respect. Mick Mars sucks. Saw Motley Crue open for the Stones in Seattle. He sucked and so did his band. Vince Neil was hammered dropping the "F BOMB" every other word. Awful.

Frusciante is a genius. Just listen to his solo stuff. Yeah, Ace does suck. My pet chimp can play all his solos. Are we talking tecnical proficiency or originality ? I am a guitar player and IMO Eddie Van Halen sucks and so does Yngwie Malmsteen. They are @#$%&. Give me Greg Ginn or Sterling Morrison solo anyday.

I have heard a lot of boots from this tour. In my opinion Ronnie is fine, with a few exceptions of course. Also i think the whole band sounds on this tour better than every round since 1994-95. Just my opinion. Let's suppose that boots are falsing to my ears. Who knows... But i cannot accept that the big majority of the so positive or enthousiastic reviews and articles are written by people who believe that "the band is always perfect"...

Mick Taylor is so often mentioned on this board because some nostalgic fans are idealazing always the past. And Mick Taylor is a part of the past. Bill is often mentioned for the same reason. If Taylor was still a band's member, would be here a lot of "Taylor haters" and "Brian's fans". I'm sure about it.

Anybody that thinks A Frehley is a poor guitar player is themselves a poor judge.

Love or hate Kiss music - I don't care - but to say he is rubbish as a guitarist says more about what little you know of guitar coupled with poor judgment, than anything it says about his abilty as a guitarist.

If you wanna hear poor lead breaks - look no further than Keith.
I love him and think he is brillant in many areas.
Lead guitaring however ain't one of them.

Maybe now, but on the '69 tour he really tore it up.

Watch "Hail Hail Rock and Roll" from 87

Keith can pull a lead out of his ass when he really wants to.

Re: Worst Lead Guitar Players

Too true:

"Maybe now, but on the '69 tour he really tore it up.

Watch "Hail Hail Rock and Roll" from 87

Keith can pull a lead out of his ass when he really wants to."

As a lead guitarist in the 60s I love him.
Esp on gear like "Carol" and so on.

I also think during the Taylor years Keith was overshadowed for obvious reasons.
Taylor is one of the greats imo - so he would have made any guitarist (probably with the exceptions of Townsend, Page, Clapton, Hendrix and Beck) look average.
Although he's generally idolised by Stones fans, I feel he is terribly underrated (or should I say generally forgotten or not thought about) as a guitarist when people consider who the great guitarists of pop/rock/blues music are.

Keith does rip them out on occasion I admit. For eg his lead on "Hold onto your hat" or more recently "Oh no not you again" are absolute ball tearers me finks.

But then you hear "Always suffering" and I think to myself that "I wasn't suffering at all until the lead break (if one can call it that) kicked in".
From there I move straight into the 'suffering' bit because the lead is so pathetic.

His live leads are weak usually and on occasion down right embarrassing.
I think it's down to laziness that his chops aren't up to scratch these days.
His phrasing at times transcends the plains of awkward to the land of clueless.
The irony of that is that I think if he was to be reincarnated, he would return as a rhythm guitar.

!!!!

The 'plains of awkward' I agree with. The 'land of clueless' is catually Ronnie's kingdom.

Keith's minimalist tic leads (on Nearness Of You, Slipping or All About You for example are either very weak and off the mark or they are dead on and brilliant. We know what he's aiming at.

I love his style and gritty yet soulful intent. It's his execution that lets him down - the 'awkwardness' which you refer to.

Anyway, he shouldn't be mentioned in a thread of this name.

He has potential to be really really bad however - but he's up against stiff competition in his own band! (It's a joke btw).

Frusciante's solo stuff isn't really to be taken very seriously, IMO... the band sort of turns a blind eye and lets him do whatever eccentric stuff he wants because he's already quit once, they sure want him to remain contented.

JF is a bit "touched" to put it mildly... which is a requirement to be in the RHCP in the first place...

But in the RHCP he's brilliant, and exactly the guitarist they need.

Keith is better now... or certainly better during 40 Licks than he ever was in 69 or 72 or any of the "early days" when he was basically Mick Taylors punctuation boy...

Keith is the RHYTHM guitarist... the RIFF guitarist... and there's no guitarist more involved with the core rhythm of his band than Keith Richards... he leaves the lead lines to someone else, always been his style.

Monkey Man- "Kiss Alive" was supposed to be a LIVE album. It wasn't because the band sucks.

Do you know what "phrasing' is when it comes to guitar playing?

Re: Worst Lead Guitar Players

KISS ALIVE might as well been a studio album. They overdubbed evrything except the crowd. No wait, they overdubbed that too !!
KISS was a good novelty and I loved them as a kid, but as far as REAL music they just didn't do it. KISS were merely masters at moving product. Even the Stones weren't as "gimmicky". Is that a word?

No of course not. That's the reason I introduced it to the topic.

As for Kiss Alive or Kiss Dead - I don't give a rats arse about the music or the band re this discussion.

My point is that Ace F is/was not a crap guitarist. He is/was very talented and had he bothered not to sink his abilities into the bottle ala Ronnie - he would have even been better.

And to say Kiss had no talent is barely worth discussing with someone who might think so.
Hate their music if you wish - but the band had an ubundance of talent.
Don't confuse disliking their music with having no talent.

I hate, absolutely hate Bon Jovi.
I recognise however that they have a great deal of musical ability.
Pity they just can't write songs and that Jon BJ sounds like he's attempting to give birth to a cheesegrater when he sings.

Hi FS Walls - long time no type :0)

>"Keith's minimalist tic leads (on Nearness Of You, Slipping or All About You for example are either very weak and off the mark or they are dead on and brilliant. We know what he's aiming at."

I agree that Keith has a minimalistic approach at times which works superbly. But we can't excuse all of them as veiled attempts at this kind of approach.

The most brilliant example of this is his work on studio "Sympathy". Absolutely bloody outstanding. Granted that any guitar player worth their salt could play this lead note for note, but Keith's composition of this minimalistic approach has no equal to my ears. Also his execution couldn't have been matched even by the likes of SRV (may he rest in peace).

I think an example of where he had the right approach but didn't quite pull it off is his lead to "Dangerous beauty".
Real BB thing happening there and even though I'm appearing to contradict myself in that I do like the solo, he could have really made this a wonderful centrepiece of the song.

Had this been a live solo I would have thought "cool".
But given that he had a heap of time to really nail a rip snorter, he fell a little short of the mark I think.

As for Ronnie and the "land of clueless", well I must admit at times that's true.
But I forgive hinm at the moment simply because of his outstanding work on LWTCDI.
My fave track on ABB and alot of that is down to Ronnie's great playing.
