>> Keith has been fooling with this song at least as far back as '77 <<
The Nearness of You isn't on Keith's Toronto 77 tapes, actually - it first appears in the 81 sessions in LA and at Longview Farm.
some early bootleg stuck stuff from Toronto 77 in with stuff from those 81 sessions without identifying which is which,
and then further bootlegs proliferated that mistake.
what Keith recorded in Toronto 77 features guitar, piano and vocals; the LA 81 recordings have guitar, piano, vocals and Bobby on sax;
the Longview Farm 81 tracks are solo Keith on piano and vocals.
or to put it another way ... the extant Toronto 77 tapes include:
Worried Life Blues (with Stu on piano; Keith played everything on the other tracks)
Oh What a Feeling
Say It's Not You
She Still Comes Around
Sing Me Back Home
Apartment Number Nine
Keith supposedly also cut Six Days on the Road and Bad Luck at these sessions, but if he did, the tapes haven't surfaced.
LA, march 81 (with Bobby Keys):
Over the Rainbow
Blue Moon
Don't
The Nearness Of You
Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On
and some instrumentals
Longview Farm, may 81:
Oh What a Feeling
Say It's Not You
Sing Me Back Home
Apartment Number Nine
Don't
The Nearness of You
Whole Lotta Shakin Goin On
All I Have to Do Is Dream
Blue Monday

"What do you want - what?!"
- Keith
