The discussion about the production of ABB, started me thinking again about this album. I think why a lot of the critical response was pretty good "best since Some Girls" is a typical comment, is because the record is coherent. This means the sound of the record is very unified, for that Don Was, should get a big pat on the back. I think B2B had as good songs, but perhaps missed this coherence with the various production teams involved. In addition the rootsier recording style also added to the coherence (Mick doing drum salvage for instance). I still think its a mixed bag though, but a fine effort at this stage of the game, (walks to stereo, turns up Rough Justice loud)
I gave it a rest or a few weeks then came back to it and like it just as much. Really outstandingdrumming, too and I love this short, sweet pure rock n' roll solo on Oh No by Keith...
a brillant cd by the stones.Stones as a group have been goin for so long and lot of the so called fans have moved on,I like the way the stones music is always diffrent. LONG LIVE THE STONES,MOANERS CAN FADE AWAY.KISH
I would agree that it's generally got a coherent sound, but as someone pointed out here a while ago, the Clifford collaborations sound a lot different, and that a "dance" tune shouldn't necessarily require a "dance" mix. See "Miss You." It's kind of dorky to switch on the "dance" eq for a song simply in that vein.
Also, I would say VL has a consistent sound, although it's stylistically trying to cover every base. And that album stinks. ABB is, "for this stage in the game," ok.
I've reconfigured mine into "A Better Bang" adding "Under The Radar" as the second track, replacing "RFD" with the shorter remix, dumping "Neo-Con" altogether and placing "We Don't Wanna Go Home" at the end before "Imfamy." NOW it plays like a modern day "Exile."
you STOLE my idea, R! I did this awhile back - dumped 5 from ABB that I can't stomach, added 3 from 40L that I would almost never play (they are better than almost all the ABB tunes, IMO)...and then added the 3 newer tunes (including Hurricane at the end). Mine opens with the album's strongest track, SSMC....
Still playing it regularly, still enjoying it! It does run out of steam over the last 2/3 tracks. I do not understand the decison making on tracks - why the hell did they left Under the Radar off and laeve the likes of 'Look what the cat dragged in' on. UTR is a great song. Cat dragged in is not. All in all though, I think the album is a good one.

I really don't see the point in that. Does it mean that if you didn't like Prodigal Son from Beggars Banquet, you'd make your very own Better Banquet and skip Prodigal Son, replacing it with, say, Highway Child??? That's SO effin' lame man.
It still doesn't do much for me. I listened to it again this morning through headphones, it just sounds very samey. 'Back of my hand', (which is a good song) is the odd one out really - I don't see the co-relation between this track and say, "See what the cat dragged in" and other similar pop/dance sounding tracks. Either make a blues album or make a pop/dance album. Don't think Charlie played as good on this as he did other albums - in a creative way I mean. He hardly hits the toms at all. IMO - We waited so long and got so little.
I just can't get on board with this album... I'm trying really hard, but some of these songs are just not stones material... Rain Fall Down, Streets of Love and Sweet Neocon are just atrocious
I love SOL, Neocon and RFD. Just b/c they are different doesnt mean they aren't Stones. The Stones are amazing b/c they are able to change their style- Anybody Seen My Baby?, She's a Rainbow, Miss You, etc. Change is the best thing for a band. I love it.

Exactly right Greg! The Stones put it out and that means it's The Stones PERIOD. If people think that it isn't, then they are prejudice to new material. That usually means that you're conservative towards The Stones, and then that means that those people are stuck in the past.
Jeez. Elton John should have saved his title "Listen, Without Prejudice" for The Stones.

What the hell are you talking about, dude? It's lame to listen to what I like? It's lame to listen to something you don't like...
I'm still playing ABB quite frequently ... I do agree there are a few tracks that drag it down ... especially Neocon but overall I'm still getting a lot out of it!
