Side Effects - Track Talk

What a cool little tune. And those lyrics. We’ve all been there, with side effects, right?

Lyrics:

My mood is down and my tongue's gettin' rough
It must be side effects
I'm taking pills, and I drink like a lush
It must be side effects
Yeah, I'm afraid of my shadow, what's going on?
Can't get nothing done, who knew?
Side effects
My hands are shaking, I'm a nervous wreck
Too many side effects
Help me, baby

There's a price to pay for everything
Everything you put in your veins

I can't stop, I can't get enough
Is it real or is it chemical?
I can't stop, I can't get enough
Got a feeling that it's chemical

Too many side effects
My moods are swinging, I got late-night sweats
I got side effects, yeah
Didn't read the label, don't know what to expect, yeah
Side effects
Too many side effects
This is worse than stopping cigarettes
I got a heart to protect, too many flashbacks
You know my, my blood is toxic, I'm losing my wits
Too many side effects
Help me, baby

There's a price to pay for everything
Everything you put in your veins
I paid

I can't stop, I can't get enough
Is it real or is it chemical?
I can't stop, I can't get enough
Got a feeling I'm obsessional
Ain't no bad, ain't no good
I hate to be hooked
I guess you were the perfect drug, yeah
I can't stop, I can't get enough
Got a feeling that it's chemical

What do we have in common?
You don't even laugh at my jokes, well

I can't stop, I can't get enough
Is it real or is it chemical?
I can't stop, I can't get enough
I'm feeling that it's chemical
Ain't no bad, ain't no good
I hate to be hooked
I guess you were the perfect drug, yeah
I can't stop, I can't get enough
I'm feeling that it's chemical

Side effects
Too many side effects, yeah
Too many side effects
Too many side effects, yeah
Side effects
Side effects
Side effects
Side effects
Too many side effects

There’s something about this track. I just love it. The way both Mick and Keith semi-spit out the words “side effects”… the feel, the tempo, the both of them singing. Wonderful

This song is awesome, the intro is perfection, the whole thing is out of this world.

Reminds me a bit of Mick and Keith running down “I Can’t See No One Else.”

Andrew Watts needs to comb thorough all the vaults and extract these gems.

The whole thing = Foreign Tongues? Side Effects?

Either way, I agree. Blown away. Far exceeded all expectations.

I'm gonna need more time with this one. Upon first listen it did nothing for me.

Damn, this reminds me of another song but I can't think of what it is!

A really cool and different riff by Keith. Reminds me a bit of The Cars at their best.

By the time this song came up I was like "whoa, what's happening with this album!?" and it actually took me some time to get used to it 'cause it sounded different and fresh. Cool, cool song. I can relate to the lyrics. Well, mostly in the metaphorical sense, the dependency to a person and a relationship analogy, not the drug stuff that it's alluding to. The worst experience I had in that regard is that I had a bout of abusing alcohol a bit a few years ago when I was in a bad spot but nothing harder than that drug-wise and I could recover from it, so it's all good. But anyway, about the song and the album, it was a funny experience, if anyone was to listen to me reacting. I was like "wow!" and "whoa!" to getting emotional with parts of the whole, like Some of Us and Back in Your Life. Like Ice Cube would say, I can't believe today was a good day.

It's one of two tracks that don't work for me...yet.

My girlfriend says that the intro is oddly similar to another (non-Stones) song, but can’t name which. Anybody else sensing this?

Someone may have already said this, but I get a bit of a Shattered groove and sound here.

Absolute banger. This one really has teeth. Also one of the songs where Keith and Mick really come together IMO. Great guitar work from Keith. Great vocal from Mick. Wood playing tasty lead work. I don't see what's not to like here.

I like this one a lot. Reminds me of Track With No Name from Voodoo Lounge sessions

Agree. Filler.
One of four I’d cut to get this down to 10 tracks/44 min.

The song which I already at first listen could sense had something. At second listen I knew this was a proper tune, a normal tune.

Previously known as "noughties".

For me it’s also one of the few weaker track.

I’m sure the very melodic chorus is an Andrew Watt idea. It kinda feels out of place and not like anything Mick or Keith would write. But I thought that about the Angry chorus too the first times I listened to it and it grew on me. Maybe this one will too!

Great track, this has been the surprise one for me. Didn't notice it at all after first play but has grown on me every play since. I'm loving this one.

A little bit unfinished song. But good to be included and great side effects phrase ....

My favourite track on the album. It builds and by the end it’s glorious. Chorus has a hook. And whilst having a quirky different sound in parts, it’s simultaneously classic stones. I can’t stop, I can’t get enough.

The Stones giving health recommendations - not for me. They would not look half as good had they not risked certain side effects.

The first seconds sound like "Der Kommissar" (Falco) to me,
but the guitars from 0:08 also sound very familiar...

I had to listen a second time to find The Cars….first listen felt not too much. Second time got it I’m feeling a bit of Misfit Kid…(call me crazy I love Panarama deluxe edition) Ronnie doing Eliot Easton lol

Possibly my favorite Keith lick on the album:
