Greatest Trios in Rock

How about bands just just need 3 musicians to make ALOT of quality noise:

Cream
ZZ Top
Nirvana
The Hendrix Experience
SRV and Double Trouble

I still want to count 3-musician bands like RHCP, Led Zeppelin, the Who and many others as trios but the board has "voted" that down.

Johnny Winter has played with various trios all his career too (although JW And was a quartet)... Double Trouble was one of his backing rhythm section before SRV picked them up.

I last saw JW prolly 5 years ago... again, an incredible trio. Never heard a lead guitarist and bassist so well-integrated. Whoever that guy was... just a tremendous bass player. Great drums too for that matter.

Elvis was never in a trio with DJ and Bill. The original Sun line up was Elvis and Scotty Moore on guitars and Bill on bass. DJ Fontana was added on drums a few months later.

I saw Johnny 2 weeks ago in Toronto. The bassist was Scott Spray and he was excellent (as was Johnny, who is moving kinda slow but still plays like nobody's business). Not sure if Spray was playing with Johnny five years ago, but he and Johnny mesh real well together.

Also, a "new" trio to check out is the North Mississippi Allstars. Man, do they rock. If they come to your city (they still play bars and small clubs), go see them you won't be disappointed.

Happy Holidays,

No one has mentioned Taste with Rory Gallagher yet so I will. Absolutely bleeding phenominal! I'd also like to second Johnny Burnette and the Rock and Roll Trio as well as Elvis, Scotty and Bill and the Stray Cats.

Actualy, even not a few months later but almost a year (aprox. august 1955) after Elvis', Scotty's and Bill's first offical recording on july 5 and 6 1954. DJ Fontana was added to his liveband because of the growing demand for liveperformances. During recording sessions for Sun Jimmie Lott and after that Johhny Bernero played drums. Still, Elvis, Scotty and Bill formed a hell of a trio.

Pardon mé for being a pedantic bástard!

Is Spray a long-haired guy, dark hair ?...

Update: Just checked the scottspray.com website. Don't think it's the same guy, but says Spray has been touring with Johnny off and on for quite awhile.

Sounds like a great gig. Johnny always moves slow, but he let's his "fingers do the talking".

People really ought to catch JW while they still can, not sure how much longer he's gonna be touring... a brilliant guitarist, nobody quite like him right now.
