So this will be like the first Berry studio cover since 1965 ("Talkin' Bout You")? A kind of little BLUE & LONESOME theme continuing there. It was one of their standard live numbers in the old club days.

Someone hearing a glimpse of it in the Conan show said it is very different to the Saturday Club version of ON AIR.
I'm all ears!

EDIT: oh yeah, I heard it also above (thanks!) - yeah, a very acoustic folk blues sounding version

It is so so so so good.

It´s an unnecessary song. His voice is booming. Why does he laugh at the end of the song? After all, it´s art.

Here is the "original" - the one Berry is said to have base the song. "Drop Down Mama" by Mississippi Fred McDowell, recorded circa 1959 by Alan Lomax (the song actually was already recorded by Sleepy John Estes in 1935 and, by the way, later find its home in Led Zeppelin's "Custard Pie").





As we can hear, Mick's right when he says that they brought the song back to its Fred McDowell's North Mississippi mood: this is the tune they cover only just using Berry's lyrics. Mick even adds McDowell's singing bits in their new version of Beautiful Delilah". Besides I never heard Mick before imitating those rough blues man shouts he does there. A cool blues nerd move and a great closer to a great album!

This is what elevates the track for me and keeps it from feeling like a novelty of wanting to end on a similar note as Hackney Diamonds.

I also love how Foreign Tongues is bookended by Chicago and Mississippi blues. If Mick's goal with the album was to comment on the current state of the world there's nothing more apocalyptic than the blues.

If Beautiful Delilah is the final track on The Stones final album, what a way to go out.

I don’t get those who don’t like it. It’s rich, authentic and Stonesy blues. Just perfect.

The breakdowns with Keith and Nick “trading “ the “fool around all night” lines, just magnificent. Magic.

Especially the middle run through of the lines. To me, Keith seems to go on a line too long and they both break down giggling at it. Truly sensational.

THIS is THE STONES, their reason for being, and their light. I love it. 5/5 on this track for me.

Oh bloody hell, I can't find it now. There are so many of them now. I think there was also Watt talking about its origin and then Mick telling the Fred McDowell reference. Anyone? Anyway, it was that remark by Mick that inspired me do that post above.

My guess is that Mick is talking about You Gotta Move ...

Prodigal Son is a Robert Wilkins track and to my knowledge
Fred McDowell has never covered it .....

Same sort of thing they did with Hackneyed and Rollin' Stone. I get what Andrew's going for but it feels a bit forced in both places. This a bit less so, and its fun to have nonetheless. Just feels like Andrew and the band are trying to manufacture what would have to be a real spontaneous moment. Always cool to hear them stripped back though.
