Look, the fact that the guys are still making music is of course admirable, but let's be honest for a moment: an 82-year-old in a music video trying to come across as a young rock star is more pathetic than this video with faceswap look-alikes.

I really have no problem with this at all. Nice song, nice video. That's perfectly fine.

Instead of being happy that we have new content from The Stones all the time, some people complain like little children or boring old geezers... The world is changing, if you can't come to terms with it, turn off your computer.

Sure, just lie back and let the world bulldozer over any good taste and authenticity.
If everyone thought like that, the Stones would never have existed. What's more: blues and rock n roll would never have existed.
then don't listen, don't comment, play Exile... and be happy, and if you can, do better... what a disgrace, what a malcontent

They/Mick don't have to do that. They looked great in the promo video. In a way, it looks even more impressive banging out that Rough And Twisted-racket if you're ancient, doesn't it? smiling smiley

Are you talking to me? I’m not making excuses for anything – do they even need to be ‘justified’? I’m trying to understand what lies behind this promotional video, beyond this hysterical reaction to the use of AI technology and the misleading journalism about ‘de-aging’. I don’t even like the song that much...

Out of pure interest: why do oyu say the idea of "de-aging" is misleading? I would say that's literally what's happening in the video. What am I missing? (Serious question)

As I understand it, 'de-aging' is what Scorsese did with Robert De Niro in The Irishman - have De Niro act out his parts and then digitally 'de-age' him afterwards. Also in Guardians Of The Galaxy with Kurt Russell.

That isn't what was done here. Someone else acted out the part of Mick, Keith etc, and then they replaced the actors face with a digital mask. This is more like 'deepfaking'.

It is also not AI, as that would have meant the whole thing was created digitally - which it wasn't as there were actors/musicians playing the parts.

and it was used well before the irishman from 2019

i think it was first used in a film for the x-men last stand in 2006

what the stones did here though is more akin to what disney did in star wars rogue one in 2016 with peter cushing who had been dead since 1994 (which i find more offensive then anything in the stones video since cushing couldn't consent to his image being used this way)

and i assume was done without the use of ai since the film was released ten years ago

Not for de-aging, but digital face replacement was already used in 1993-94: [en.Wikipedia.org] .

Frontman of The Darkness; they opened for the Stones at Wembley Arena in '03

He did a reaction to Angry, if I recollect. Her often has his acoustic out, and tries to play along a little.

The commentaries by rock fans under the video seem to pretty much agree with the so-called whiners here on IORR. The top rated comment for the video is "I know, it's only AI, but I hate it." And Justin Hawkin's title of the video says it all: "Why deepfake The Rolling Stones?"

Great review. I concur with most of the observations. Was the "face-replace" necessary? No, or maybe not?

Does it matter, change anything including their legacy? Are you kidding? Absolutely not.

I think it was a successful experiment and as long as this isn't the default position on videos moving forward, great use of the technology.

The video? I don't think the band invests, or put their effort into it, as much as they used to do. They give the marketing people free hands with as little effort from the band as possible. In a couple of months few will care about the video anyway.
Videos were a big deal in the 80s and 90s - not so much anymore.

The culture of the language being used by Rolling Stone and loads of others is ridiculous: it's not de-aging but it's being called that. It is AI just on the three people from the band Hot Property to deepfake them to look a lot like Mick, Keith and Ronnie.

Here's just one example from Pitchfork: The “In the Stars” short was directed by Francois Rousselet and features a de-aged version of the band playing a house party alongside A’zion, who dances then licks a deepfaked version of Mick Jagger.

The video has currently been viewed over 968K times.

It seems to me that Justin did not really know/get that the Stones characters in the video were not totally AI-generated but body-doubles enhanced by a digital face-job.

Despite the somewhat click-baity title I rather found Justin's reaction video humorously positive.

As with many things Mick was involved in making the video. Over the past decades Mick was always interested in trying out new stuff (stage, touring, support bands) and always liked new marketing ideas. There were never 2 press conferences exactly the same - always something new.
So this is just them trying out something new and this is what I personally like about the Stones.

The formula behind the longevity and long-lasting relevance of The Rolling Stones was perhaps best explained by Charlie in the Four Flicks documentary: “Keith brings emotion, Micks brings direction.” Keith makes sure the band is rooted with integrity, while Mick embraces modernity etc. etc. However, this is a bit different IMO. The Stones turning to disco or reggae is not the same as turning to AI. Some were probably outraged when they heard Miss You or Dance (pt.1). But at least it was real musicians playing real stuff. Thankfully, they are still playing their own stuff, even on ‘In The Stars’ – although it sounds like a generic pop song. ‘Rough and Twisted’ demonstrates real musicianship, it’s just a shame that the mix/mastering is of unfathomable poor, amateurish quality. However, just the thought of using deepfake/AI-technology to make fake, younger faces of the Stones members in a music video for a new single, is problematic for a number of reasons. First and foremost, they embrace and legitimize the use of a technology that is a threat to the very genre and spirit that they have spend about seven decades to build, mount, and defend. Also, I have the impression that most grown ups are fed up with AI already. This could have been a ‘cool’ music video three years ago, but now people are so tired of this stupid AI shit that this video in a strange way is already outdated and not as hip, modern, cool, and controversial as they think it is. And the irony is, if they had presented themselves in this video just as they look now, old in their 80s posing and playing with grey hair and wrinkles, people would have loved it and respected it far more.

Well, without getting into details, let me just say this: I work with education. Teenagers/young people in their 20s do not know how to read and write anymore. And it’s far worse than that. They have simply stopped thinking. They cannot navigate the streets of their own hometown without Google maps. They don’t know how to lace their own shoes without asking SIRI. Every life problem is supposed to be consulted and fixed by ChatGPT. They are the most helpless generation in the history of mankind. This happens simultaneously when we are facing existential threats such as climate change and world war. A driving force behind the stupidity, ignorance, and polarity, are AI, social medias, algorithms etc. That is why some of us are not exactly thrilled when The Rolling Stones (who was born out of the ashes from WW2, being anti-war and anti-authoritarian in their lyrics and expressions, such as encouraging people to think for themselves, and embracing freedom and liberty for decades) suddenly turned to "the dark side." I don’t know what the exact word is – regression, atavism. But fact is, AI is a threat to democracy, harmony, peace, stability, free speech, freedom, creativity, integrity, and rock & roll. I dare say that anyone who disagrees with that, do not understand the potential monster of AI. And that is why some of us are disappointed with our favourite band right now. It is not about being “negative” for the sake of it. It is because AI is truly damaging.

The worrying thing is that there will be no push back against AI because the elites that control media will mind control people into all the positives, they will say it will be used to prevent climate change, save people from dying of cancer, improve education etc.

Truth is it paints a far darker picture than what you have expressed, a quick study will educate anyone who cares to research that this is the end of mankind.
The greed of the money men that control governments, media, education, corporations, freedom of speech etc will insure AI moves forward until it merges us with AI to form the singularity, basically it could transform consciousness, create a simulation reality.

It's already happened so my advice is accept it and live your life like there's no tomorrow, love your family and try to be your best you for yourself everyone else.

To be honest people are so into their phones i doubt they even care, mobiles were the trap and we all fell into that one.

Okay back to the Stones new video, i don't think it will age well, certainly not as well as Undercover Of The Night, that was controversial at the time, i remember a heated channel 4 interview with Mick Jagger and video/film maker Julian Temple being accused of showing too much violence, a shouting match between the interviewer, Julian and Mick ensued which ended up with Mick smiling, he'd got what he wanted, everyone was talking about the new video.

Julian went on to make more Stones videos and Keith's video for Main Offender, Wicked As it Seems.

These videos mattered because they were ground braking for a rock band and involved the Stones and Keith in his videos.

The artists were passionate about being involved, they had the energy to care about the final product. Sadly at 83 this year they don't have the same energy to see things through. I have a feeling it would have been the same had they toured, the energy wouldn't be there for all the show or some of the shows.

Wonderful post, and frightfully true. Every morning, on my daily commute, I observe these young zombies, aimlessly 'scrolling' on their device; no-one is reading literature; a newspaper, even. It is very sad. Lord knows how younger generations manage to gain degrees in English lit and language anymore; are they using AI to summarise the plot and help with writing their dissertation?

Whilst I agree with all of the points raised about AI (I also work in Education and see it's damaging effects), let's not forget that this Stones video isn't AI. It's just computer generated imagery. Whilst it could be argued that all AI is computer generated imagery, not all computer generated imagery is AI.
After all, Toy Story wasn't AI.
