Clearly? ... So how does that work, exactly? They were in a meeting, and 1 said ... hey, let's fool gen z into thinking we're really younger than we are. 2nd person:... But don't they have the internet and/or already know how old we are?
1st person ... nah, I don't think they know how to use the internet.

Furthermore, and once again ... if that is the goal, explain the album cover. Or making appearances on public tv. ** edited: I guess the album cover could be explained in that they were clearly appealing to folks in Old Age homes.

How did they “design” the marketing strategy aimed at Generation Z? Here’s my 2 cents on it. 1. There’s the classic move: the young actress, the rising star; 2. The video is full of real-life young performers. This also serves a specific promotional purpose: as seen in the days immediately following the launch, the video or “making-of” images were shared by countless pages belonging to or linked to those young performers, exponentially multiplying the reach of the video and the song to users who would otherwise have been unlikely to be exposed to “the Stones’ new song.” Like it or not, this is also what’s at stake with the video.

The point isn't to make them look young to attract a younger audience. In fact, the idea that AI was used for de-aging is bullshit, as is clearly explained in the Hang Fire podcast. The point is to try to get the song circulating outside the predictable circle of the band’s longtime fans, who are generally adults and older people. The retro vibe of the set, the clothing, and the musical niches they represent is all part of this game, in my opinion. Whether you like the video or not.

The Stones have been selling out for ages ,just see a list of their sponsor's for their tours, but here they outdid themselves and not in a good way, no matter all the excuses here, they are bunch of old guys trying to look young, so they can be accepted in Tic TOC and the rest of the BS, that influencers push.. Face lifts would have been more honest than the crap in the video....My two cents.

If someone cares to find out more about some of the performers in the video, here is Charlie, the "northern soul dancer guy"

Northern Soul dancing world championships runner up 2025 Founder of The Brighton Soul Club

From this perspective, the whole video project strikes me as the exact opposite of a narcissistic AI-driven project; rather, it’s AI being used in a sort of ‘Fame 2026’ set in an imaginary Stones universe to promote a new song.

I hear you, complete sell out, and I'm struggling to understand why Keith has signed up for all this.

I can't believe the bullshit behind justifying this AI crap.

Are you talking to me? I’m not making excuses for anything – do they even need to be ‘justified’? I’m trying to understand what lies behind this promotional video, beyond this hysterical reaction to the use of AI technology and the misleading journalism about ‘de-aging’. I don’t even like the song that much...

for the same reason that mick has

to sell the song and the album

what possible leverage could mick excert on him at this point to compel him to agree to something he dosen't wanna do?

refuse to tour?

face it everthing we may or may not like about the band, the album and this video keith signed off on and i bet he didn't have to have his arm twisted to do it either

it's not just mick doing this by himself

I dunno mate, i don't think Keith is in the driving seat anymore, we all age at different times, this is Mick's band now. Keith is very loyal to Mick but i get the feeling Keith is just gonna retire now. Good luck to him, he's earned it.

I'm going to retire now too, nice talking to you ProfessorWolf, thank you all for putting up with me.

Physical release was last Friday so the charts will be updated this Friday in most countries. With streaming alone the Stones won't get any success

It is not The Stones. It is Mick Jagger insisting on not growing old. For ages he has been doing the same. At the El Rey promo show in 2001 he hired a bunch of video models. They were placed in the front, nice young girls to talk to, paid $200 each, short, in order not to stand out too much. Security asked us older looking peoople in the attendance to move aside, to let the paid models a third of our age, in their early 20's to the front. The same happened in every promo shooting, like Beacon Theatre, Fonda and so on. Paid short video models, some times even young boys, in their early 20's at the most, paid $200 each to make the Stones fans look young.

Now I understand why Keith looked a bit lost during the press meetings. He just did not approve of any of this. Ronnie had no vote. So Mick got what he wanted.

If it is stand-in's, lookalikes or AI does not matter. It is not the Stones, and it is not their fans.

There is something called "growing old gracefully". Then there is something called desperation. I am sure a psycologist or a social anthropologist will have a better analysis of it.

A bunch, 10+ drummers, same with keyboards and bass players, non looking like Darryl, Steve, Chuck or Matt. Professional dancers. It is not my band. Not my friends in the "crowd". It is a time machine back to the 70's, but I just can not get myself into watch it anymore. It is probably ment for the younger fans.

Agreed.

It has reminded me of something that happened very early on in their career.

AL-O took over their "management" and the first thing he did was to set about making them look like all of the other bands that were around at the time. Mainly by making them dress the same in the same chequered suits.

See [sfae.com]

But, being The Rolling Stones they rebelled. That simply wasn't who they were, and are. They rebelled and gradually bits of the suits got conveniently 'lost' or 'forgotten' until they came back to being who they were, and are.

This AI video really really reminds me of that. It's a mis-step arising from well meaning but WRONG advice, and the sooner it's forgotten the better.

Have you not thought of that?

What does it matter? It's a goddamn music video.

I stated that I saw it once and that was enough.

Explained in the HangFire podcast, there’s no AI in the video
It’s just their faces superimposed on the Hot Property bands faces using deepfake technology

There’s no way that the Stones are going to faff about making video clips like in the past involving long 12-14 multiple days on sets hanging about to end up with a 4 minute video
It’s not aimed at a younger audience,it does involve younger than 80 year olds prancing about in a freaking film clip

I have no problem with the band using new technology and techniques to make video clips for YouTube or whatever
It’s fun, colourful, vibrant and full of energy and fun Easter eggs for stones fans.
Stop ya sooking and get grooving.its 2026 and everyone is getting their knickers in a twist over a band playing as the Stones in a clip.

If the mini series of the band ever gets filmed I can already hear heads exploding over actors or technology that will enhance the look and feel of it all

I also understand that they want to make the Stones look young. Rock & roll music is about being young, a teenager, rebelling against your parents, against society, chasing after the girls, no stability. When the Stones were 30, they were already called too old for rock music. Now they are over 80, it actually makes no sense that old people make this kind of music nowadays. I'm glad they're doing it though.

Was 'AI' used for more than the animation of the billboards? I hasten to add that I reckoned the animated billboards were by far the best bit of the video. Sydney Sweeney proved that you don't have to be AI to look fake.

Sure, just lie back and let the world bulldozer over any good taste and authenticity.
If everyone thought like that, the Stones would never have existed. What's more: blues and rock n roll would never have existed.

De-aging is a different technology than the quite old Computer-Generated Imagery-technology, which is what the Stones used for the video.

As I understand it, 'de-aging' is what Scorsese did with Robert De Niro in The Irishman - have De Niro act out his parts and then digitally 'de-age' him afterwards. Also in Guardians Of The Galaxy with Kurt Russell.

That isn't what was done here. Someone else acted out the part of Mick, Keith etc, and then they replaced the actors face with a digital mask. This is more like 'deepfaking'.

It is also not AI, as that would have meant the whole thing was created digitally - which it wasn't as there were actors/musicians playing the parts.

Ok, thanks for the clarification.
So, I understand that de-aging is technically the wrong term, but that doesn't change the fact that the Stones in this video are represented as if they are still young.
And even though I didn't like the sexist aspect of the the Angry video, what I did like was the bill-board thing: show the younger Stones as if they were playing and singing Angry.
I don't know exactly why, but the billboard thing I thought was funny and cool, whereas with In The Stars it seems a bit sad. I don't mind the 100 drummers and the young dancers and all that, but putting there a fake-young Stones somehow gives a sad impression and apparently I am not the only one. Still think that the younger generation doesn't care about them anyway and certainly would not be attracted to a thing like this. The original clip of just excerpts of them in the recording studio was much nicer.
I like the cover of their new album though.

yep matxil those of DandelionPowerman and Bakerboy2 are the explanations of the term de-aging and why it is not appropriate here. Deepfake technology is a AI technology but works differently.

You say: "What I did like was the bill-board thing: show the younger Stones as if they were playing and singing Angry. I don't know exactly why, but the billboard thing I thought was funny and cool, whereas with In The Stars it seems a bit sad".

You touch a very good point here. It shows how a similar effect, younger stones playing a new song, can be achieved with different technologies at hand.

Of course I have nothing to say about whether one likes the In The Stars Video or not, but it strikes me the outrage that comes this time because they use that specific technology to do something similar in concept if not in the way: doubles "digitally masked" instead of animated billboards.

In both videos they use contemporary graphics technology to show themselves in the video not as they are actually in the present day. For some reason this time the reaction is very hot.

Furthermore, in response to this reaction against the ‘artificiality’, I wanted to emphasise that the video also has a much more traditional and ‘human’ aspect: a large physical venue serving as a stage, filled with performers whose role seems to me to be similar to the billboards in ‘Angry’: traversing the eras of the Stones. Kind of a "Fame" flavour to me.

Finally, on the subject of integrity, I noticed that all these ‘extras’ are in fact meticulously credited, and many of them are sharing the video and images from the set, fulfilling what seems to me to be the promotional task towards the younger generations that appears to be dear to the band, and certainly to Mick.

ps: I like the cover a lot too
