History of the 1972 Philadelphia shows

Does anyone know how the recording of these 3 shows got out and why are there only parts of each of the 3 shows?

Can't answer your question but the Philly shows were recorded for the double live album that was planned as a Christmas release. One disc would feature Stevie Wonder & Wonderlove, the other the Stones. Unfortunately, because of Allen Klein, this never happened.

They made recordings for Radio Luxembourg, for the CS Movie, soundboard recordings, and for an album. Parts were broadcasted on Radio Cleveland as well.

So that's why there's quite a lot material in different sound qualities, and some with overdubs.

I have always found it strange though that the 3 shows have not shown up in its entirety.

The Rolling Stones already reissued Ladies & Gentlemen.

Maybe they consider that the market could not absorb the Phily 72?

And or that is not good enough to be issued.

Without excluding also legal question about a deal with ABKCO?

Or that they simply have another things to focuse on?

As legendary as the 1972 Tour is, I have never particularly connected with it; primarily because there isn't a truly great official release, or a bootleg of the quality of Brussels Affair. If I am incorrect, could someone point me in the right direction? The 'Ladies and Gentleman' release was quite a disappointment.

There are two bootlegs "Philadelphia Special" I and II. Got them since the early 1990s.

I think that's probably the case. I remember reading (have now looked and can't find the source) that they could not find the masters for "Ladies and Gentlemen" and the audio is directly from the film print, not the original soundboard tapes. The story goes they could not find the original master of the film either but stumbled upon a pristine copy of the film in Ian Stewart's garage and that was what was finally released on video and audio.

Re. Ft. Worth & Houston:

It seems fairly certain that the original L&G film negatives are lost or were dumped during production of the movie.

Out of all the official archive releases in the last years, L&G was the only one which did not have newly re-mixed audio from the original multis. Which seems strange since there was also a worldwide theatrical release of the movie at the time and the effort to go back to the original tapes would have made sense. There was also no bonus material from the Ft. Worth and Houston shows included whatsoever.

The audio quality of that release has been widely critizised ever since its original release in 2010 and indeed, it compares unfavorably with the other vault releases. It sounds like the soundtrack from the Eagle Rock release (and the seperate CD release in 2017) uses the same source as the old VGP bootleg ("You Can´t Do That Baby") as it shows the same defects and identical overall inferior quality, like a reference tape or prelim mixdown of some sort. It appears that they did not have anything better to work with at the time.

To me, these are strong indicators that there are serious issues with the original source material. On the other hand, there are pictures from the band´s vault showing Ft. Worth multitrack tape boxes. Maybe the material is incomplete and some of it got lost or it is somehow damaged.

Philadelphia is a complete mystery, there is no proof of existence or information regarding the current condition of the master tapes, and nothing new has surfaced for more than 40 years.

It’s a shame the Stones do not have a higher quality soundboard recording from the ‘72 tour. These Philadelphia shows are some of the finest they have ever done or ANYONE has ever done.

Listen to All Down the Line from the early show in July 21. Absolutely cooks. Taylor is on fire on the slide, Keith churns the rhythm to a boil and Muck belts out the lyric better than ever. Powerful stuff.

We do have decent soundboard recordings of these shows. Would be wonderful if Stones released an official recording nearly as is. Guess we can only dream and wish for it.

Saw many a show at the Spectrum but was too young to see these shows from the Stones. Some amazing sh*+!

I actually watched the Ladies & Gentleman DVD last night for the first time in years.

On the interview Mick says the film was taken from 3 different concerts so there must be something in the vaults somewhere.

They may not want to be bothered with releasing the additional footage or it is not good quality anymore.

Maybe the technology that was employed to enhance the sound of the Let it Be music or new technological advancements could be employed to make the music sound better

Probably. Still you need a lot money for that.

"That (photo outside the Spectrum) looks like AI". Agreed.

Meanwhile I do wish they'd deploy some of that Let It Be-style Ai magic to resuscitate a '72 recording. Can't believe it's not fixable.

I agree about photo. The sign would have full colors of the spectrum logo. Th Vet is also missing as it would have been across the street, Pattison Avenue.
