If one were trying to identify the oldest club still standing and running in its same early 60's configuration, would we find a single club?

Here's an incomplete list and I know there were many more in the club days.Is there a single venue from 62-64 The Stones played in their infancy still running ?

Waldbühne is an amphitheater, in 1965 the venue got destroyed during a Rolling Stones concert, the Waldbühne still excists with some great concerts.

The site that Sidcup Art College once occupied, is now a supermarket.

The Red Lion pub is still in business, amazingly. It is now called ‘Ye Old Red Lion’

Edit: similar location; wrong pub! The Red Lion that the Stones occasionally performed at, is now a pub called ‘The Winning Post’ The name changed circa 2010, apparently.

Probably the oldest one that really didn't change at all is the one club they didn't play until 1982: the 100 Club.

I’m not sure about the Ealing Club and would love to know if anyone is aware what’s happening there. I went to 3 shows there in 2018 and it seemed to be as it was - and it was wonderful. But I’ve heard it is slated for demolition due to the planned expansion of the transport system, which may now be delayed. I get periodic emails from them about concerts or films being shown, but it’s not clear if they are being held at the Club, or elsewhere and the ‘Club’ is now just an historical society. Does anyone know more?

This mystifies me.

First of all, something always worth celebrating is the club itself. No better way in the UK than a Blue Plaque [www.ealingclub.com]

But about the location itself. The original club was downstairs in the Ealing Tea rooms which I'm pretty sure were demolished in the 1980s. The remains were, as you'd expect, piled into a skip on the site. Amazingly two perceptive passers by (sorry, I never learned their names, but they get much praise) spotted the painted sign that was on the original wall proclaiming that the club was there in the Tea rooms. They spotted it, they retrieved it, and they gave it to Bill Wyman for his collection. (I do not recall seeing it in the 2020 catalogue, so he may still have it.)

So I'm mystified as to how sometorontogirl can have gone there to some shows in 2018, when it was demolished in the 80's. Perhaps the revived club is meeting in a different location to the original..?

Half moon in Putney is still going strong

Hmmm. Well, it was down those narrow stairs across from Ealing Broadway station. The Ali Mac band played one night (Ali MacKenzie was in The Birds with Ronnie in the early ‘60s), as well as Chris Jagger and Ben Waters. The Argentinean Stones fans seem to have organized the Ben Waters gig - they were delightfully bonkers. Ali stopped by to see Chris Jagger and I had a wee chat with him - apparently he lived nearby but has since passed away.

The Station Hotel, Richmond. Building is still there but it’s now a restaurant. There’s a minor nod to the Stones connection at the rear of the building. Picture of group on the wall.

"Minor" - it's one of a handful of really really important places in UK popular music (eg The Cavern) and that's all they can manage. Shame!

Agreed. To add insult to injury unless you accessed the toilets at the rear of the building you wouldn’t know it was there. Went there for a function and no one in the party knew about the history of the place.

The "Crawdaddy Club" [www.crawdaddyclubrichmond.com] exists these days at the Richmond Athletic Ground - not sure if this is physically the same venue as the one where the Stones played when the club moved from the Station Hotel in the 60s?

The Wetherby Arms on the Kings Road is now a Paddy Power bookmakers and has been for several years. (betting shop)

As well as the usual adult gigs , Half Moon Putney hosts rock and roll gigs for primary and junior school children. A 10 year old relation of mine is lead singer for The Moving Pebbles . They are very proud of their Rolling Stones connection.

From Keith Richards autobiography; ‘Life’:

‘I went to the Bricklayers Arms, a seedy pub in Soho, for the first time for the first rehearsal for what turned out to be the Stones. I think it was May of ’62, lovely summer evening. Just off Wardour Street. Strip Alley. I get there, I’ve got my guitar with me. And as I get there the pub’s just opened. Typical brassy blond old barmaid, not many customers, stale beer. She sees the guitar and says ‘Upstairs’…………. I walked up those stairs, creak creak creak. In a way, I walk up those stairs and come down a different person…”


In 2019 it was a record and book store. Nowadays I don’t know

That sounds interesting, does anyone know more about it?

We visit the former Station Hotel (now One Kew Road) a few years ago and also looked around the back of the building – but I didn't know if there's anything historical left to see at Richmond Athletic Ground.

Is there a clubhouse ? or something similar that the Stones used as a venue?
Can fans visit anything there, or is that only possible during events?
Is there anything original left from the early sixties?

If so, I'd like to visit it .... soon.
Does anyone have any information ?
