Yeah, I liked that one too. Personally, I never heard him as a great guitarist, more of a showman using his axe to highlight himself. Noisy. I rate him as an innovative composer and hitmaker. Many classics that haven't been mentioned like Kiss or Nothing Compares To You. He kind of dried up in the 90s (due to his opioid addiction?).
The only song I liked from Prince was "Girls and Boys".
Then again, he wrote some songs that worked very well for the Bangles ("Manic Monday") and Sinead O'Connor ("Nothing Compares 2 U").
Was he talented? Yes. Did I like his music? No. In general, no, I didn't.
I have just revisited that performance. I like it when Prince plays the slower bends and wailing stuff, not when shreds or plays speedy distorted flurries, then it sounds like a mess and that doesn't fit for a weeping guitar...so for me, I don't see that as great playing. It's ok, he hits the bends right, but not more than that.
Thanks for the link, I enjoyed it, hard recording, but cool. Prince knew his way around the fretboard for sure. His support guitarist was a fine player too.
Prince was one of my favorite artists. Truly a musical genius. Amazing songwriter, singer and guitar player (everyone always talks about his famous solos, and they are great. But it's his rhythm playing in particular that is incredible imo). Without a doubt the greatest live performer I have seen too - his live vocals and playing were so good.

Just thinking, would love to hear the stones take a crack at When Does Cry (which of course would never happen).

Prince passed on 10 years ago. What a loss, just like Tom Petty. Great version of what I consider his most most famous and one of his best songs. Enjoy.

Absolutely tremendous talent. Saw him live in 1988 in Detroit on the LOVESEXY tour.
Holy crap.
Amazing guitar playing. He made Clapton look like a joke.
Great album. The new songs were fantastic - even Bob George - and the old songs were as well.

eh ... I suppose he was a talent but that doesn't translate to great songs. The only song of his that I ever really did like was Purple Rain (granted I only heard what was on the radio, never listened to a full lp).
Songs like Little Red Corvette, Doves Cry, I Would Die For You ... change the station!

Underrated guitarist. Instrumentalist, actually. Dude could play anything and play it well.

I have just revisited that performance. Still so cool the way Prince, during While My Guitar Gently Weeps, comes in and shreds the living hades out of the rest of the band during the ending part of the song. One helluva great guitar player who should be given more props for his guitar skills.

Unfortunately saw him only once, his Milano stop of the sign of the times tour. To this day one of the best concerts I've ever seen.
I have boots of some of his after-concert club shows that are simply fantastic-
Love his early and late albums too, but the run Purple Rain - Around the World in a Day – Parade – Sign o' the Times – Lovesexy remains something absolutely special.

His 80s run from 'Dirty Mind' to 'Lovesexy' is the crux of his legend, but I also love stuff like Emmancipation, Gold Experience, 3121, Lotus Flower, and right up to Art Official Age & Hit N Run Phase 2.
Saw him live only twice; once in 2007 (the night before the Stones final show of the Bigger Bang Tour), and once in Dublin circa 2012.
His 80s run from 'Dirty Mind' to 'Lovesexy' is the crux of his legend, but I also love stuff like Emmancipation, Gold Experience, 3121, Lotus Flower, and right up to Art Official Age & Hit N Run Phase 2.

Prince toured Japan six times, 1986, 89, 90, 92, 96 and 2002. I attended every tour, saw eight shows in total. Of them, Osaka 86 (second night) and 02 are among my top five GOAT concert experiences. Unforgettable.
As for WMGGW at the RRHF, one of the most referred to of his guitar performances, while it is amazing in its own right and technically impeccable, it feels to me leaning towards his trademark showmanship or borderline exhibitionism (that’s Prince, I know). In terms of artistic expression, Clapton’s original iconic solo is second to none with its emotion-driven phrasing IMHO.
Tomorrow, the 21st, is the tenth anniversary of his passing. I wonder if Eric will play Purple Rain at his Guildford homecoming show.

The gig from the Purple Rain tour 1985 is just sensational. What a talent he was!
From the guitar playing to the vocals to the dancing to the outfits to the quality of the songs....
It's easy to forget that he could play every instrument as well as or better than the members of his band.
