I have no proof but it might be that Charlie had a lot to do with it. Don't think he was willing to spend weeks/months in the studio in his final years of his life. They did some loose session here and there (Living in a ghost town, Mess it up and Live by the sword were all results of these sessions) but couldn't commit to a longer, intense period of writing/recording.
With Hackney Diamonds they set a deadline ("valentine's day") and were commited to finishing that record in that time frame. They probably didn't have studio sessions this intense for a very long time. With Steve as a "hired gun" this seemed suddenly possible again.
And then - of course - there was Andrew Watt who was also a good negotiater between Mick and Keith.

Keith clearly didn't have writers block in the making of Crosseyed Heart, i wasn't suggesting he did, we agree on that.
I remember Mick saying he has 50 demos around 2015, not sure what happened to them, i mean he didn't make a solo album with them so maybe they weren't up to much.
Oh, so is Rough and Twisted the 'B-Side', or are we looking at a Double A-Side, here?

Honestly, anyone doubting Andrew Watt's contribution/worth, need to listen to them again. If that was the path they were on, then Andrew truly worked miracles.

I know it‘s a minority opinion. I think both songs and their 90s Trip Hop feel with rocking guitars, harmonica, clavinett etc. would have worked great for a Rolling Stones project. Both songs need a bit of work, of course, but there‘s a lot of interesting things going on and Keith‘s guitar would work nicely on it (Ronnie is already on them as far as I hear). Plus, and a big plus, the mix and production are much more pleasant than Watt‘s.
But on to the release of the single today! Hope it will a good one!!

I really don't know about 'writing block' I mean, they were busy touring and releasing Deluxe Editions, such as Exile on Main Street and Some Girls. A 'new album' may very well have just been down the list of their priorities at the time. The subsequent marching of time has evidently created a sense of urgency, with two albums released a mere three years' apart.

Today, May the 5th , the band will announce more details from the new album.There will be at least four different vinyl versions, all with different colours. There will be a box set with CD and blu-ray. At May the 15th, a 10'' and a CD single will be released : In the stars / Rough and twisted

I’ve just heard new song called In The Stars. It’s typical midtempo Jagger’s song. Sad to say it but it’s just avarage and Keitha chords make it Stones song. I’m not great Andrew Watt production fan. It overproduced and too polished for me. B side would be rough and twisted

'Mid-tempo Jagger song'? That doesn't entirely surprise me, and it certainly doesn't mean it'll necessarily not be to our taste. We'll all have to wait and reserve judgment. Roll-on 5pm! I'll be on the last leg of my commute home; I may have to run!
