Any fans here? Are they on a farewell tour this year anyone know?

Deep Purple In Rock and Machine Head are both fabulous. Ritchie Blackmore, IMO, isn’t quite talked about enough. A tremendous player; a near-equal of Beck and Page. He’s probably more similar to Jeff Beck, I suppose.

I had the Made in Japan LP when I was younger, trying to play along with Blackmore on my guitar smiling bouncing smiley

Touring with an absolutely crazy schedule too ! Not sure how Gillan is going to make it through, he was already pretty shaky on his legs in 2004...

Made in Japan was my first DP album, got it in Spring 1973 (those were the days) ...
IMHO, one of the greatest live albums ever!

Its amazing that its still Gillen, Glover and Paice. Excellent musicians and singers, though I can't vouch for Gillen recently as I haven't seen a live video of them in awhile. But Paice is such an unsung hero of music. Glover too but Paice has played with everyone and done it spectacularly. I think of him like an Anslay Dunbar who just crushed it all the time. Its sad that Jon Lord is no longer here, but Airey feels like kinda the only replacement. Which then leads you to Blackmore, and personally I can't accept a Deep Purple without Blackmore. I get why they do it, they should, and I have no issues with Steve Morse. But Blackmore is a huge part of what set that band ablaze, and its like seeing the Stones without Keith. There's just the attitude and energy of the band missing. But Blackmore sans a few years hasn't wanted to do rock music for like 30 years, so really what are you gonna do. But his work with Deep Purple, and then Rainbow, is just phenomenal.

Gillan.

He was better than I expected when I saw them a few years ago. I'm not a big Morse fan, though. Haven't checked out McBride yet.

Bought Amex presale tickets a couple days ago for Abbotsford! 7000 seat arena outside of Vancouver, they get a fair amount of concerts there. Will be seeing Bryan Adams there a couple weeks after. I just saw him late last year in Vancouver. A lot better for me since it's half the drive compared to going into the city.

My elder brother attended one of Deep Purple’s two 1972 Osaka shows that were recorded for the Made In Japan live album, which was released under a rather bland title, Live In Japan, over there, more likely the first night, 15 August. Only Smoke On The Water was selected from the day, but he was there.

That album helped the band establish an iconic status among the Japanese rock listeners. I have even the impression that Deep Purple edged Led Zeppelin in popularity in Japan in the 1970s.

For a (short) time, when Machine Head came out, they were bigger than any other act. Understandably so.

I have enormous respect for Blackmore for leaving the spotlight behind to pursue his love for renaissance music.

The Holy Trinity of Beck, Clapton, Page. Nope. As far as lead guitarists go, Blackmore is an equal to all three of them. Period.

He does not get the same attention as those three because he does not want to. He rarely gives interviews and never attends tribute shows, award ceremonies etc.

I am surprised that there had been no OT discussion on Deep Purple until this thread was started this month! I remember that Classic Rock put together a list of the Top 100 live albums ever and Made in Japan was not included. For some reason, Deep Purple get overlooked, dare I say ignored.

I got to meet and hang with Ian Paice in 2020 and he was super nice. Just an all around good guy.

I'm planning on seeing them at Tio Pepe winery in Jerez Spain. Great band and great Sherry, I'm very excited. Still curious why there isn't any Portugal dates though.

DP are great! I've seen them a couple of times, last time I saw them I shouted to Ian Gillan, "Ian, we love you!" and he responded directly, "I love you too."
I think Morse fitted real well, McBride's good. Blackmore always slags off our boys so I'm happy to see the back of him even though he's a great guitarist

Knockin' At Yer Back Door, Never Before, Burn, Highway Star, Strange kinda woman, Ted The Mechanic, Perfect Strangers - so many great songs they've got

Without going into politics, here is trivia; Sanae Takaichi, Japan’s new and first ever female prime minister played drums in an amateur heavy metal band when she was young. On a music radio program she was invited to recently as a guest, she requested Deep Purple’s ‘Burn’, commenting, “I love this song. It fires me up.” Her favorite drummer is Cozy Powell. There you go.

I hope it's okay to say I like her, my Japanese wife said she's doing great things. Plus she likes Deep Purple, bonus!

A person’s liking is one thing. Their politics is another matter. She is a right-winger BTW. I won’t go further into this. Peace.

One of my favourite bands and live acts. They haven't announced anything final but obviously no one goes on forever. New album out this year I believe, plus a tour. They sound great since Bob Ezrin began producing them in 2013.
