For the Japanese fans, the Budokan show meant a lot.
It was the Stones’ first arena concert we experienced. Prior to that, they had visited the country three times, in 1990, 95 and 98, but the venues they played were all colossal domes. Budokan is no theatre whatsoever, but thanks to the octagonal layout, once inside the house gives a relatively compact impression for a 10k+ arena and delivers an intimate feel enormodomes are incapable of.
Another point. The Stones were booked to play the Budokan for 5 nights for their 1973 would-be first Japanese visit that was cancelled just about a week before they would fly in to Tokyo airport for Mick was refused to enter the country due to his drug bust record. For many of us in Japan, the group’s Budokan concert was a 30-year dream come true.
The excitement that gripped us that night was massive before the house lights were turned off. We were so high even not on drugs. If you remember the Budokan, you were not there.

What was going on with the towel during Live With Me?
Is it my imagination or do they jam out Tumbling Dice longer than usual?
Sorry, I don’t remember…
