Stones songs that you've only listened to once or twice
Posted by: peoplewitheyes ()

Of course, I love the Stones, and many of their tunes I have listened to thousands of times...

However, there are a few tracks that I never wanted to go back to - most of the first year or two's blues and covers (I'm just not that interested), and also some of Keith's latter day ballads (How Can I Stop, Theif...) that just seem to go on and on with no structure or surprise.

How bout you?

(I'm not saying these tunes are 'bad', of course, they just don't appeal to me at all)

Edit - I realise now that this post is a bit negative, so apologies if not allowed and please delete.

Back To Zero & Sweet Neo Con spring to mind. I also always switch off when How Can I Stop/Thief In The Night come on - I just can't get through them (which is a shame, because I know a lot of people love them).

Most of Between the Buttons, with the exception of LSTNT, Ruby Tuesday and Connection.

Okay, probably a bit more than once or twice, but under under five times probably.

Also most of "Dirty Work", but also a bit more than once or twice.

Basically everything post Black & Blue.

Under The Radar and We Don't Wanna Go Home. Not because they are bad, just not properly placed as bonuses on bonus DVD.

Also most of those awful 'dance remixes' from mid-late 90's. Not my cup of meat.

Just about all the dance and club remixes.

And I don't think I have managed to listen to 'Hold Back' until the ending.

Empty Heart, Hold Back, Sweet Neo-Con, Suck On The Jugular, My Confession, Where The Boys Go, most of Under Cover ... these spring to my mind. There are a few I like slightly better but didn't listen to them more than necessary

I haven't listened to any of the remixes, released as B-sides.

As far as I recollect, these are the tracks I have only listened to a mere handful of times, or not all all:

Everybody Needs Somebody To Love - 'Zzzz' (5-minute version)
Going Home - only the first few minutes
Sing This Song All Together (See What Happens) - maybe the first 30 seconds?
Melody - simply not 'my thing'
Emotional Rescue
Continental Drift - maybe the first minute-or-so
Suck on The Jugular - maybe the first 30 seconds?
Might As Well Get Juiced - I'm not even sure how it goes; I just know it's bad.
Thief In The Night - not my cup of tea
Losing My Touch - Zzzz
Infamy - Zzzz
Hurricane - ??

Edit: goodness; what's Keith done wrong? confused smiley

You might just as well title this thread «songs you do not like». And by your listing, you dislike Keith. Threads about dislike make no sense on a fan site. Some like the mother, others like the daughter. Some like meat, others are vegetarian.

A hard core Stones fan must have played through EVERY album many times, more than just one or two times. I must have been playing the Satanic album dozens of times, side by side, on vinyl, because that is how it came. I loved it, even if some say it is crap. Then I might have moved the pickup needle to tracks like She’s a Rainbow, 2,000 Light Years From Home, Citadel etc a big more, but I have never skipped one track because I don’t like it. Just like I love all my children, grandchildren and friends. Not to be skipped.

Now with playlists and digital recordings you may make your own albums, but I dislike the rearranging of songs. Anyone who have played Sticky Fingers must have a special feeling about side one and two, every song. Same with Exile. Same with Hackney Diamonds.

But I would not bother to close this thread, because so many call me bad names and things already.

Hi BV, fair enough, I did realise when I posted that this might be the case, so I do apologise.

I do love Keith, by the way, and absolutely adore 90% of his songs. Just some that (although I know other people love) I cannot get into.

(By the way, saying I hate Keith is a false dichotomy logical fallacy, just because I don't like a couple of his tunes, doesn't mean I don't like him/the rest of his amazing work)

The only songs that never really convinced me are most of the frankenstein bonus songs with new vocals over old tracks. I don't dislike them, but the formula never really convinced.

See, i disagree with this. Great albums *need* bad songs, often just to show how awesome the great stuff is.

Take Led Zep III, it's great but then you have Hats Off and it's a mess, but once it's over you flick the disc and you're back into Immigrant song. Yay!

I often skip 'Just want to See His Face' because it does nothing for me, but it leads into Let it Loose, and if I've put up with JWTSHF, LIL sounds even better, if such a thing is possible!

i can think of very few albums, ones that I think to be five star classics, that *still* don't have some kind of 'yeah i could do without this' track on them!

I was born in 1979, so when I became Stones fan, I had the 'luxury' of buying albums on CD and with that, the option to easily skip tracks that I didn't like.

There are a handful of songs that I (consciously) haven't played more than 5 times because I just really don't like them.

- Feel on Baby

- I Just want to see his face

- Fingerprint File

- Goin' Home

This thread is only interesting in one point: There are Stones Songs which are not my favorites but whenever I skipped them or turn the vocals down when they come up I feel a bit bad like acting against my band.
So in this thread I thought may be I find some other IORR'ers with a quite similar little list of disliked songs. So I can discover: Hey I'm not alone.
But then I unerstood: It's rubbish to talk about the songs I don't like. It's like thinking of the weak sides and mistakes of your best friend. Waste of time time! It doesn't lead you anywhere. Think about the things you love of him, the things why he is your best friend.i.e.: Think about the songs/shows/etc. which made the Stones your best band.

How would I know if I like the songs, if I only listen to them a couple of times?

Songs like Moonlight Mile, Let It Loose and She's So Cold had to grow on me, for instance, and they eventually entered my top 10.

That's a very fair point, DP. Now, if I can just listen to Back to Zero a few more times, I'm sure it'll become one of my very favourites. grinning smiley

I sure know some songs I don't like here and there, but I never skip anything and in the end I play all records about the same number of times, ususally because I play them all in a row at least once a year.

I guess I don't have anything better to do anyway winking smiley

I've played everything more than twice, especially in the earlier days. People change and don't like some of the songs anymore, myself included. But even the newer albums I've played several times and those are my least favorites. Recent released live albums is a different story. A lot of them I haven't played through once because I don't like the sound.

I can't listen the whole Satanic Majesties and Dirty Work, I've tried but it is impossible for me...

I haven't actually popped in TSMR since I got it and not sure if I ever made it all the way thru more than once.

Never got Blue And Lonesome or heard every track though I am sure it's good.

I had not listened to 'Money' more than once or twice, and not for decades...... and when I stumbled over it the other day I realised..... it's an absolute belter!

Tracks I deliberately avoid include:

Gotta get away
Surprise surprise
Gunface
Hold on to your hat
Short and curlies
You gotta move (studio version)
Gomper
sing this all together (see what happens)

If I am honest I am just to lazy to skip songs.
The only album I never ever listen to is TSMR, I only listened to it twice, first when I bought the old cd from the eighties and later when I bought the Sacd and that was enough. Only the double single I like the rest I find so boring.

Agreed on those that I 'bolded' -- Especially Remixes!!
And I might as well throw in Back To Zero, and a few others from DW.

Short and Curlies? Damn, that is Keith at his very best.

I did not say "you hate". I said "you dislike". Big difference.

Every artists, even the best like the Rolling Stones, have „filler tracks“. What’s interesting is that the whether a track is a filler or not is very much in the eye of the beholder.

That’s why I find this thread quite interesting, seeing how fans‘s filler can be another fans favorite. I can not understand at all how „Emotional Rescue“ and „You Gotta Move“ are stated as fillers but it’s interesting to see how opinions vary.

I don't know about that. The songs I usually skip over, especially live, are the most overused warhorses. Like HTW, MY, SF and JJF.
