No, not really. I was tempted to ask what the purpose of this thread is, actually. It seems like he has just listed the songs, with no context. Are we meant to discuss the merits of each song, or have a chat about how we feel about 'lengthier recordings'? Anyone? What's this thread about? Hahaha! Great point. At the moment it's just a list of songs and their length in minutes/seconds. Fascinating stuff grinning smiley

Wow, there are songs longer than four minutes? I'm stunned with surprise ... but hey, if there's no tour it takes some refreshing posts :-)

You know, I used to have an aversion to any recording clocking-in at over four minutes. I discovered the Stones through my dad's collection, consisting of only the 1963-1966 period. I was so used to the compactness of those early recordings, that my attention span couldn't handle anything longer. Shockingly, I returned Let It Bleed to my local branch of Our Price for this precise reason!

Wasn't the Animals' House of The Rising Sun the lengthiest single at one point? A year later, it would be surpassed by Dylan's Like A Rolling Stone, of course.

I was going to elaborate about how some songs seem long but time wise they're not. Worried About You is one. Is it long? Yeah. But it's not very long. Winter seems long.

I decided to not mention that.

Surprisingly Coming Down Again is almost 6 minutes.

In a way it's a refresher, I guess, looking at what's over 6 minutes sans anything pre-1968 because, well, they're horrible.

Of course, it's about the finished version on a Long Player. We know Miss You is almost 10 minutes long and Hang Fire is almost 13 minutes and loads of other songs - Flip The Switch is 20 some minutes.

Someone mentioned the 12" of Miss You. Well, there's two of them, edited differently, but I was staying away from remixes and or extended versions. Aside from the 1986 production style the remixes of Harlem Shuffle and One Hit hold up. UOTN and Feel On Baby are still great to listen to. Of course Miss You will always be the best one. Even though they didn't do very many actual remixes.

I relate to the UK version of AFTERMATH.

There to me "Goin' Home" is a major attraction. Besides, this song number is a link between the R&B band that they started out as, and the "progressive pop" band that they were continuing as during a phase with three studio albums and some marvellous 'noisy" single A-sides and remarkable B-sides of a different character.

I listened to Goin' Home again and skipped forwarded through a bit since it's just nonsense.

In the big picture it's nothing special. It was in 1965, as the posted article says.

It's weak pedestrian at best. There's nothing significant about it except for how long it rambles on, which was more of the big deal - Mick's harp? That's a joke.

They didn't get good at playing blues for a few more years.

Which is why I didn't include it in my list in this thread.

ok maybe goin' home isn't there best but that's a little much

they most certainly could play the blues well by 1965

though admittedly they got significantly better at it by the late 60's early 70's

In my opinion, they were at their best as a rhythm-and-blues during the 1963-1965 period. From 1966 onwards, they began to evolve into something different. Yes, I guess that 'musically', they only improved as time went on, but certainly, in terms of recordings, the blues and rock 'n roll are most greatly represented on those early-to-mid 1960's recordings. Their U.K. debut is a masterclass in youthful energy and enthusiasm.

I agree to a large extent with Big Al here. Apart from their debut UK-album, the way I got to know their first two EPs and the single "It's All Over Now" and the now much neglected blues song, an early Jagger & Richards composition, "Good Times, Bad Times", months delayed on my part I have to admit, were by German Decca's compilation AROUND AND AROUND. A compilation that I therefore always have experienced as a studio album.

By the way, I guess that "Goin' Home" appropriately would be characterized as a blues jam.
