Elvis still rules!

Still the King. If I remember right, Keith once said Heartbreak Hotel basically turned his life around. Looking forward to seeing this on the big screen.

Some Elvis fans will kill me for this, but I do think that his early Vegas years were the best, the gospel vocals , the band, timing, everything. Truly a maniac here. The best frontman, next to Jagger.

Wow! I only wish my wife, who passed away two years ago and was a huge Elvis fan, could have seen this. I still miss her every day and life isn't what it was without her.

The Stones 1972 tour deserves this treatment

I got to see Elvis live twice in 1976 & 1977, Greensboro, NC. My mom took me lol. Incredible seeing him! Had a ticket for later in ‘77 but alas, it was not meant to be. Being a stupid teenager, I sent the ticket back for a refund; should have held in to it.

I was surprised to see that my top played album for 2025 on Spotify was Elvis’ GI Blues soundtrack. I used to watch the movie with my mom on cold winter days like today. Evokes nice memories

His voice is so great though. He uses all these little inflections within a song, but it comes across as he just enjoys singing vs showboating to prove his range

Wow, lucky man. But Elvis was in bad shape already, wasn't he?

My late father was a big fan of the 50’s-early 60’s Elvis period. in my opinion, his immediate post-army recordings are overlooked: His Latest Flame, Little Sister, She’s Not You, etc. I understand the historical significance of his Sun recordings and the revolutionary effect of those 1950’s RCA tracks, but there’s magic in to be found throughout his catalogue, really.

I really wish he had done a world tour. Colonel Parker be blamed.
Would have loved to see Elvis Live At The Budokan released.

Another bit on the new movie. There's a bit in the read that notes about an album he did after his Army stint. Interesting note/quote on the album by the articles writer: "Elvis Is Back (blues speed freak invents the Stones)." I have Elvis Is Back among many other Elvis albums. It has some good songs but I never thought of the Stones in relation to it. I may have to dig it out of the archives and give it another listen.

Just came from an IMAX theater. The movie’s worth every praise. Truly epic.
The songs are edited heavily, though. I’m not sure if there’s any songs in full. But it is great anyway. Go and watch it in IMAX if you can.

I never thought it would end.

You think Mick and Keith watched that and thought Oh HELL YEAH!!! We should play Tumbling Dice for at least ten minutes in 1994 and Satisfaction for almost 8 minutes in 2006 etc?

The first concert, I was sitting on second level. Much closer the second time. Yep, he was huge then BUT his voice was still Elvis. Nothing like seeing middle-age women tossing their panties and bras on stage spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

This was Elvis 1970, mind you! I remember the Stones doing street fighting man in 1973, it almost never ended. They almost slaughtered that song. It's also the enthusiasm of the musicians and the interaction with the audience. That's what live acts are for: entertainment and joy.

Anyway, I'm glad you didn't kill me. winking smiley

Well, I think Mick and Keith already watched and were making notes of, say, James Brown at TAMI doing "Please Please Me" or whatever they saw dudes like Bo Diddley and Little Richard doing when they toured with them during the early days. About how to interact with audiences. Even their own early live versions of "Hey Crawdaddy" as a typical show closer at Richmond were pretty long I've heard.

Interestingly, I have never find anything wrong with people doing longer versions or not wanting to stop a certain song or groove if the heat is on and everyone in the room is having fun. I think that belongs to the concept of a live show. If the Stones are doing "Satisfaction" or "Jumpin' Jack Flash" for some ten minutes, and I feel good and loving every sec, like everyone at there supposedly does (often acknowledging that this is the last number), what's the problem?

By the way, "Suscipious Minds" might be my favourite Elvis number and I kind of agree with that the best Elvis era ever was the early Vegas days - no matter how uncool it always have seen in the history of rock and roll.

The ‘Comeback Special’ and the immediate years following, certainly revitalised Elvis and produced some of his very finest, most enduring recordings; both studio and live. Although the quality may have tailed-off a tad as the decade of the 1970’s progressed, the only real nadir, so to speak, was the period beginning at the end of the early 60’s, through to 1968. Despite the terrible films and soundtrack recordings, there are nuggets amongst the dross: Viva Las Vegas; Kissing Cousins, etc.

Does anybody step forward and say, “The ‘Vegas’ Stones are their best era”?grinning smiley

Seriously, I remember I came across a post from an old-timer who, looking back and comparing the 1972 and Steel Wheels shows — he attended both — claimed that he doesn’t miss the former.

Elvis only had two actual touring "eras." Late 1954 to early 1957. At the end of the 1960s he took up his Vegas residencies, but that was a hotel stage act, it wasn't touring. Then he finally toured again 1970(?) until his death.

When I got interested in music, about age 14 in 1969, Elvis was of no interest to me or anybody I knew. He was just an obsession of women who had been teenagers in 1956. As it so happened, though, and as I've related elsewhere on IORR (sorry for the redundancy here), I did happen to see most of his two shows in Norfolk in 1975, simply because I was a 20 yr old rookie cop and they took me off my beat and put me inside the arena for both shows. It was entertaining. I got to rove around. Hung by the stage awhile. Got to be underground as his limo arrived once and departed once. Had no idea who the woman with him was... I just knew it wasn't Priscilla.

When he sang Chuck Berry's lyrics "I left my home in Norfolk, Virginia, California on my mind" both shows that day, turns out those were the only times he ever did in Norfolk.

Elvis was a police junkie. (And a gun nut... I learned later he kept a very small one in one boot during his shows.) He collected police badges. In photos of one of the two Norfolk shows from that day he's visibly wearing a NPD badge on-stage on his jumpsuit lapel. The Elvis lore is that it was a sergeant's, but I always thought it was a guy in my platoon's... a Field Training Officer. (We all had two badges, one the city gave us and a second one we had made at our own expense.) Anyway...

Those shows didn't make me an Elvis fan.

However, the next year I read in Rolling Stone Bob Dylan say he was listening to the 1976 first-ever album release of Elvis's 1954 - 1955 Sun Records sessions. I'd never heard of the Sun Sessions, but if Dylan approves, okay, I tried it. And became a fan of Sun Sessions Elvis. Plus a few RCA tracks in 1956... up to Jailhouse Rock in early '57. Beyond that era, there's little else I particularly liked. He had few more great songs, yes. But not a lot.

Tomorrow night I am seeing IMAX Elvis.

Elvis Unchained Melody an intensely beautuful song live in June 1977, two months before his passing!

Elvis was obviously influenced by Roy Hamilton’s version of Unchained Melody, although I think Elvis surpassed it.[youtu.be]
