Tumbling Dice (taken from Stripped-single Wild Horses in Holland) is the best live performance of this song. Just like Gimme Shelter (also from Wild Horses single)... I like when they first rehearse it in the dressing room and then they paste the rest of song from a recording on stage after this.

If there is one complaint: On the original from EOMS the rhythm part is played almost constantly (keith part?). Keith never plays this rhythm anymore, just filling rhythms. Too bad, cause it's such a great guitar driven song!

Anyway, this live version is their best I know of.

none of the songs that have previously been released on live albums or compilations are "hard to find" as they're all currently available. ""Sucking in the 70's" for example was only reissued on CD earlier this year

Additionally, "Stripped" sold something like 3.5 million copies (a very high amount for a live record). Re-releasing a song from that album on a 'Rarities" package makes no sense - especially as the albums that most of these previously released songs appeared will have sold far more copies than "Rarities" will.

The album title is a complete misnomer. It should have been called "Sampler"

I suggest you nick it and not buy it. Starbucks used to sell these cute little magnets w/their coffee blend logos on them. Fair enough; but there was a separate magnet that WASN'T for sale that listed the magnets and their prices. I nicked that from a Starbucks in 1993 and have never even felt a wisp of guilt.

Not only that, but Starbucks product is inconsistent from store to store and it's supposed to be like McDonald's -- a quarter pounder w/cheese is supposed to be the same in Bejing and Miami -- and McDonald's succeeds where Starbucks fails. Also, McDonald employees don't act like they're special. I mean, Starbucks employees are coffee jerks, they can drop the frikkin attitude.

Who is NOT disappointed with Rarities? I haven't even bought it yet though I'll get round to it - probably when it's in the summer sales.

Who selects and approves these things? It's a decent enough set but most of it is not hard to come by and not therefore rare.

I certainly don't like it. When the release was announced I thought it was a golden opportunity for The Stones to make up for live licks and to restore some faith in the possibility that one day they were going to catalogize their music, maybe share some previously unreleased (live) material and care about their legacy.

It's like Gazza said: sampler would would have been a better name. Rarities smells like genuine disinterest in the Stones camp.

hmmm, Gazza, Rarities surely is not a "Hit Sampler"and it's not a "Real Rarities" for hardcore fans, but there is some rare and some "obscure" stuff on this CD.

BTW: Can The Rolling Stones ever release a CD that will satisfy all of us? Look at the Bigger Bang diskussions here on IORR: This song is weak, that song is bad, there are to much songs on ABB and why didn't they Under The Radar?

All the things The Rolling Stones will do is wrong for some of us.

I never said and I'll never say this "Rarities" will be my personal favorit, I'm a little disappointed because they didn't remix Through The Loneley Nights, it seems more a demoversion than a finished track.

But what I say: This Rarities-CD gives us a new view. Nobody on this board wouldn't really have released such a "Sampler", right? ;-)

IORR, But I Like It, Yes, I Do!

BTW: Real Platinum Hardcore Stonesfans are very, very happy with their very exciting an rare Fanclub-DVD they've shot for only a hundred Dollars ... ;-)

The only thing ggod to come of Rarities is TTLN and LIR. My single version of each of these was crackling.....Where is "honest I do" the live versions of 2000 light years or play with fire instead of the retreads from stripped....

never mentioned the word 'hit', in fairness but the album fails as a concept on all levels for the reasons you've hinted at. Its neither an album of rarities, nor is it a compilation of songs from albums. So, its basically nothing.

maybe but thats going to be the case for anything they (or anyone) has ever done. There are people here who dont rate Exile or Some Girls very highly, and there are others for whom the Stones basically didnt exist prior to 1968.

think we're all happy enough that they're still making new music. Even if some people find the need to find more to criticise about that new music than they do to praise it

maybe, but what I do know is that every single person on this board could have compiled a 80 minute CD of non-album rarities (ie, previously released songs) from the period from 1971 onwards which would have been more worthy of the "Rarities" title than this mess of a release.

The version of BoB is hopeless. Turgid, overflanged guitars, tempo not right, sounds like a bad cover band. Now the version on Stripped Companion, thats the boy!

Oily.

i think the problems with "rarities" is the fact, that a couple of its songs aren´t rarities at all (for the details see other postings), nor it is a real sampler, because some songs are actually rare stuff. i say it´s neither fish nor meat. a compliation made without passion and love for detail!

Wandering spirt is right: i say it´s neither fish nor meat. a compliation made without passion and love for detail!

You forgot to add ,and just made for the money. All of us loyal fans deserve a better effort than this. Someone in the Stones camp could do a little homework and come up with something really special. In the last couple of weeks,we have seen countless selections from the fans right from this site .They have taken the time to contribute alot of great stuff. We thank them all. Mick and management should take notice and reflect!

In my opinion, the title should have been "B-sides" or "Flip sides" or something like that. With the following track listing:

Fancy Man Blues
All Down The Line (Live 95)
Undercover Of The Night (Live 89)
Beast Of Burden (Live 81)
Anyway You Look At It
Jump On Top Of Me
So Young
Wish I'd Never Met You
Cook Cook Blues
Think I'm Going Mad
Through The Lonely Nights
Black Limousine (Live 95)
Let It Rock (Live 71)
The Storm
I'm Gonna Drive
Gimme Shelter (Live 95)

I think whats most disturbing from this release is that it is the second 'product' issued under the Rolling Stones name in the last year ("Live Licks" being the other) where its quite obvious that the Rolling Stones themselves have been so disinterested that none of them have listened to the finished record (or bothered to help in compiling the tracks for it) before authorizing its release

I cant believe for a second that any of the 4 band members could have listened to the finished version of Live Licks, because surely at least one of them would have noticed the abomination that is "Rocks Off" on that release and demanded it be re-edited

Similarly, I find it hard to believe that they would be so clueless as to assemble a collection of songs like this under the name "Rarities" when so many of the selections are easily available on albums already. It seems their only input is to approve the erasing of any reference to Wyman on both the sleevenotes and photos used.

For the second time in a year, they have put their name to a release in which its quite evident they had zero interest. Years ago when Decca released albums where the band had no interest or input, they had enough pride in their art to take out full page ads. disowning the product as 'inferior'and not worthy of their name. Nowadays, they seem happy to go along with any old money-making, amateurish crap that their record label puts out. Not a good sign

@Gazza,

You have a jpeg of any of those advertisements you speak about?

Re: Who Is Disappointed With Rarities
Posted by: Gazza ()
Date: December 19, 2005 13:49

No, but I think theyve been reproduced in a book or two at some point

They're from the early 70's after the Stones left Decca. When Decca started repackaging their old material with albums like "Stone Age" etc, the band responded by taking out ads. in the NME, Melody Maker, etc, disowning it and urging their fans not to buy it.

Fully agree with you Gazza.I tend more and more to believe that while they are still alive and kicking ( making albums and touring) they are unable to concentrate on their legacy. On top of it, it seems that Keith has no longer interest in spending nights and days in the mixing room making sure that they deliver the right product to the fans. What has happened to Rocks off on Live licks is the proof that none of them has listened to the record before the release.Would not have happened 10 years ago!

Yeah, the one against Stone Age is in Roy Carr's book from the 70s.

It isn't a great release, but a quite good one. I would prefer more blues tracks. The long versions of "Miss You" and "Mixed Emotions" and the track "Dance pt. 2" aren't necessary in my opinion. "Beast of Burden" (live) and "Anyway You Look at It" are the highlights. I heard "Anyway" for the first time, it is simply an uncovered gem of our band.
