OT: Winter Olympics in Italy 2026
Posted by: bv ()
Date: February 8, 2026 11:50

Feel free to post about the 2026 winter olympics in Italy here. Just make sure you are not too nationalistic!

My first impressions: Ski jumping must be for young athlets without fear, and speed skating is really high speed!

Paint it Black was used by the American Ice Dancing team during the olympics. Sensational!

Saw it. The pair in gothy costume dancing to a slow instrumental cover of PIB. Felt the attire and music fitting for each other. Kudos to them.

For any Canucks watching the Games, our national hardware store and general destination for all gadgets and stuff, Canadian Tire, is running a commercial over what seems to be the instrumental track Off The Hook. I say, give ‘em a silver just for that. grinning smiley

There was a commercial during the Olympics tonight that used She's A Rsinbow in the background (with a woman singing) as a young girl imagines skating at the games.

I didn't realise there was an Olympics this year! It doesn't seem to be getting much attention, here in England. Perhaps 'we' prefer the Summer Olympics? I suppose it makes sense, considering our climate and lack of snow.

There are a few British cross country skiers who live and train in Norway, even speaking perfect Norwegian. Andrew Musgrave is one of them. On a good day he could actually be top 5, or even on the podium for a medal.

We love them all in Norway, they have a great sportsman attitude, they ski great, and the British should be proud of them.

Yesterday was a great Olympic day for Norway. First our top idol Johannes Høsflot Klæbo won a gold medal in 20 km skiatlon. He is expected to win more gold medals during these olympics. Then Sander Eitrem won the 5,000 m speed skating competition, just two weeks after he set the new world record on that distance. He was in happy tears for a long time after he understood he won the gold medal. These happy moments tell us all how much work there is about winning an olympic medal. They happen every 4 years only, that is why they are so hard to get. You must be the best then, not last week or next week. The Olympics are for sure the greatest goal for any athlets.

Very true. Lindsay Vonn crashed. [www.theguardian.com] The same goes for cyclists in the descent. Actually they are asking for trouble.

Vonn competed in downhill, not ski jumping.

It was just sad to see Lindsay Vonn falling badly, and then hanging under the helicopter, on her way to the hospital. At age 41, and with the "new knee", and other injuries, I think she took too much of a risk, especially at her age. Still, that is the love of the sports.

As for fast downhill biking/cycling, it is just crazy. You are at 70 km/h (45 miles/h) or more, and a flat tire, a dog or a deer, or anything else, may end your life in a moment. I have done it myself, speeding crazy fast with a bike downhill, many times, but thinking back, I don't understand my own, or others risk taking. Still, it feels great, the faster the better.

Happy you started an Olympics thread! I had forgotten they were coming up until the day of, and watching them has been a positive joyful breath of fresh air for me. Love it all, from the Downhill to the figure skating, to watch these athletes is inspiring.

Our Dutch skaters were fantastic yesterday!
First we had Femke Kok but than Jutta Leerdam showed her immense talent and was the best! Yeah, she is a glamour girl, but she also delivers when she has to and yesterday she ruled!!

He must be crazy, ski jumping at 53. Same age as Jaromír Jágr, same passion of performing at mature age, I guess. But Noriaki Kasai haven't had any results to speak about for some years.Did he make it to the Olympics this year?

He made it to the World Cup this year, on a national quota, but not to the olympics.

A great day for Norway yesterday, btw thumbs up

Norway did indeed do well yesterday with three gold medals. Also one gold so far today, in snow which is more like slush than cold snow, it must be hard to compete in that snow.

Work wise I think the TV sets in Norway are turned on at a lot of meeting rooms and resting areas. It is like Superbowl every day for a couple of weeks now.

I noticed in one event (I believe it was Men’s ski jump) if two athletes received same score they both get that medal and so four medals were given (1 Gold, 1 Silver, 2 Bronze) yet in another event when two athletes tied for Silver only a total of three medals were given (no Bronze).. Did I interpret this correctly?

I always find these winter events gobsmacking and just marvel at the competitors on so many levels. They are really amazing and, to me, incredibly brave! The speed skating was fantastic but so is the skiing, snowboarding, skating and all the rest. Looking forward to tonight's figute skating!

Cyclists: I completely disagree with you; cyclists and other athletes don't seek it out. Exciting sports involve risks, just like in real life, where you can get hit by a car, for example! I'm a fan of cycling races like the Tour de France, the Giro, and the Belgian and Dutch cycling races. I cycle myself, and a few years ago in the Jura Mountains, near the Swiss border, I got a taste of what real cyclists experience on a daily basis! I also try to watch the Olympic Games

The Norwegians as winter olympics athletes are so much better than the rest of us mortals that even if they cheat that's alright. Well done, Klaebo - one might have thought you would have won the sprint skiing without your team cheating. But I guess better to do that with a certainty. And naturally all that FIS (International Ski Federation) can do is say 'sorry' for those who have suffered from the injustice.

The Norwegians are truely by their domination (in every means possible) doing their best that no one else in the world cares about shit about skiing (dominance kills interest). Thank god Swedish female skiers making a big difference now!
