The Blimp announcing the world tour 2002
Posted by: flilflam ()

I remember the Stones flying into an airport or something to kick off a major concert. In my mind's eye, I remember Charlie Watts looking nervous and fidgety, with the other Stones teasing him. I tried to locate this on YouTube, but could not locate it. The blimp had a huge Stones tongue on it.Am I imagining this or did this terrific publicity event actually happen ?

AND....

They also sold inflatable replica's of the dirigible. I have two. And as I type one of them is inflated and hangs permanently to my left. Kept up by very thin nylon cords that totally foxes many people especially young children.

Where is the original?

Can we assume that Matt Lee has one?

The blimp landed in Van Cortlandt Park, in the Bronx, New York. (Probably a second choice, after Central Park in Manhattan.)

I believe that the suit Charlie wore was originally owned by Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (former King Edward VIII).

I never thought that Charlie would wear second hand clothes!

For non-royal-nerds, the King in question is the one who Abdicated in 1936 due to his love for the divorced Mrs Simpson (the UK's current King and Queen are both divorcee's - how times have changed.) He was sent to The Bahamas for much of WW2 to keep him out of the way.

Did you watch the 2003 Four Flicks documentary - [en.Wikipedia.org] ?

I remember it well!

As an 18-year-old fan, who as of yet had not seen them live, it was mightily exciting. I know there was one more 'world tour' to come, but this was the last time the Stones really pushed the boat out for a tour conference.

I love the Blimp, one their best ideas. I remember the radio controlled version flying around inside the Madison Square Garden before the concert. Was great.

Watching the snippet of the conference, and hearing Mick mention ‘three kinds of show’, makes me so glad I had opportunity to catch them on this very grand, quite ambitious tour. Sigh, time does march on, doesn’t it? Now, many here, are merely desperate for *something*, anything.

Pedantically, it wasn't a Zeppelin. It's a Blimp. smiling smiley

A Blimp is an inflatable (like a balloon) and a Zeppelin (Airship) has a metal framework. As far as I can tell carefully watching the video's, it's a blimp. As is the one in my room at home. But a lot smaller.

Trivially, ‘Le(a)d Zeppelin’ famously originated from Keith Moon’s joke, ‘lead balloon’.
A balloon doesn’t have a metal framework, eitherspinning smiley sticking its tongue out

I’m going to bed. Nigh-nigh.

Well no luck tracking it down, does anyone have that somewhere ? Is it worth watching or more of the "same old, same old" ? ;-)
