Here's the link to the youtube video of the song.

Heartbreaker breakdown

Who's playing the funky guitar riff? Keith or Mick T?? I think it's Keith but it's a little too funky for him (to my ears).

Thanks

Well there’s a clavinet played by Billy Preston. I’d have to listen on speakers.

That's Keith Richards playing the E-minor pentatonic notes.
Taylor comes in with the brutal wawa pedal E7/9-Eb7/9/-E7/9 chords.
Preston doing a splendid job at the very moment.

Pretty standard Keith when he's playing funk. Listen to many of his licks in Dance, for instance.

I think the real funk player is Preston. Taylor and Richards are funk rock.

At what point in the song can you hear Taylor’s guitar? I only hear one guitar played throughout the song along with Taylor’s two solos.

Likely right from the beginning, or it's Keith's echo. At 0:33 he comes in playing short melodic counter lines, and later on. For the rest he's playing along with Jagger's vocal lines, octave based lines, power chords, 7/9 chords during the bridge and of course solos. He's all over the place.

I hear Taylor playing harmonics as soon as Jagger starts singing the verse, then some soft melodic lines during the chorus, he doubles the vocal line on the doo doos, practically the same stuff in the second verse chorus, then the solo etc. Funk part is keith.

Mathijs mentioned a while back during the rotterdam rehearsals that we finally recognise what Keith would have played on stage.
Or am i confused with another song?

I don't remember exactly, but on the Rotterdam Rehearsals you can hear Keith playing the part he did on the record, and developing it further.

As said above, Taylor is playing the notes of the Em7 and Am7 chords, as harmonics and as connecting melodic lines countering the vocals and Keith's part. For the chorus he doubles the main melody of the clavinet and doubles the vocal line. He uses the Wah cocked to get a deep burly sound. Keith is playing the main chords of both the verses and chorus, and he plays the funk part.

To me, Heartbreaker and Gimme Shelter from Wembley and Midnight Rambler, YCAGWYW and Angie from Brussels remain the best 30 live minutes the Stones have ever done -even after listening to it for more than 40 years it still amazes me how perfect it is.

Mathijs speaks for me. I first heard a ~Brussels boot in 1978 and still listen to it regularly. I never get tired of it, just like I never tire of EOMS, which I've probably listened to 500 times since I got it for my 12th birthday in July 1972!

I agree on that although Gimme Shelter Philly'72 is amazing as well, but the sound quality sucks. .

Mathijs,

You are so correct. I would add All Down the Line from Philly in ‘72 to your list and a version
of Brown Sugar and JJFlash from 72 or 73 as absolute nirvana when it comes to live performances by the Greatest Band in the World.

I read somewhere that Keith said playing the first chords of JJF brings him sheer joy. I have the same reaction and so do millions of people.

The channel switch sucks as well. Keith in the left channel makes me dizzy smiling smiley

For some reason I never listened all that much to the Philly SB recordings...I much prefer the Washingtong, Charlotte, Mobile audience recordings, and the Honululu shows, those are fabulous. I also prefer the Winter Tour SB's of Perth and Sydney.

And my current flavor of the month: Birmingham 1973: fabulous!
