Don't you get a chance to still get one at Gibson Garage?

Am I alone in not entirely 'getting' the allure of these so-called 'signature models'? Isn't it somewhat more desirable to own your own guitar; something you can shape through playing and age, to create an instrument unique to your own experiences?

The 'Artist Collection' series of Les Paul's, ES- and SG's are hugely popular, and depending on the level of aging and the number of guitars made are priced anywhere between 13K and 20K. Most of them are sold out within a day, and increase drastically in pricing over the years. Early serial numbers of the Gary Moore 'Greeny' Les Paul are 50K for example. It's the same for Fender Artist Custom Built.

The value of the instrument itself is normally in the 6K range, but aging of the hardware and finish is really expensive, especially when done in the Murphy custom shop of Gibson. It's done by expensive American laborers and takes quite some hours work.

What you get here is one of the rarest guitars available -a mono ES-355 in ebony with Bigsby, aged to mimic one of the most famous and recognizable players in the world.

A modern reissue of an Ebony ES-355 is on the market since (I believe) 2010, but there were always undesirable issues, like a Richlite fingerboard and a thin 1960's neck, and they never came aged. If you are in the market for the perfect Es-355: this is it.

Of course, the US comes online 6 hours later than Europe. What I am seeing is that in Europe most guitars available to the big flagship stores were already spoken for before the release, there were a couple available for a short moment. In the US the same. And this is for the second batch without the signature on the back of the headstock. The first 50 are, for so far I can see, already taken up by the big collectors and the big stores like Norm's.

I think this guitar will double in value within a year, just like the Mike McCready Masterbuilt and signed Strat, the signed Knopfler Burst, the Gary Moore Strat and Burst.

I am wandering why Fender and Keith have not worked out a similar deal regarding a Fender Telecaster/Micawber? Imho Micawber is a much more iconic guitar regarding Keith than the Gibson 335. I would love to see Fender do a Telecaster project which gets endorsed by Keith in the same way!

Who is going to pay for the labour, materials, labor, keith’ his time???
The fact that it was sold out in just a few hours simply means that the its a fair price or even too low..

Also define “hardcore fan”….

This is the same reason I would have bought one of the Noel Gallagher signatures when they came out if I’d had a spare $10k laying around. It’s just a really really really good version of a really good thing.

To be fair he did play in standard but why not even ONE Chuck Berry riff or summat similar to IORR just to show that Keith sound? The lads from the CME opted for non-355 tunes too, performed in a "Silicon Valley" style

The deal most likely is that Keith gets half a dozen to give to friends, 40 of the double signed version go to big stores like Chicago ME and Norm's, and the rest are being send around the world, with one per shop.

It's simply impossible to make these guitar cheaper with the average hourly labor cost of an American laborer, and the amount of time it takes to age a guitar like this properly. Some of these 'Artist' guitars get a less costly Custom Shop or Standard USA series version, and sometimes even an Epiphone version. I doubt Gibson makes a lot of money on these. They really are meant to be showcased at Guitar conventions and the like.

These Murphy Lab Artist series guitars are not for the masses -they are flagship Masterbuilts to show the absolute best level of what a guitar builder can build.
It's much like when Ferrari builds a F500 Mondial 2026 Version in an limited Edition of 5 to show off at conventions. They won't be cheap....

There are contrasting stories about what exactly went on. The Custom Shop did build some Tele's on request of Richards, some say it were copies of Micawber. Then some say they replicated Micawber in an edition of 10, some say it were 25. Then Richards put a halt to it, apparently.

A couple of those 'Keith Richards' Tele's have shown up on the market, but in all fairness they weren't copies or clones of Micawber. They were aged, and they had a humbucker in the neck position, but that was just about it.

There is a 'secret' code though to order a Telecaster with the same neck dimensions as Micawber: order a Jason Smith Masterbuilt 1953 Telecaster with neck humbucker. It will set yo back 10K though.
