The deluxe editions are probably more appealing to them. With a compilation album of outtakes, it's probably a lot of effort and then a case of 'all their eggs in one basket', and the sales probably wouldn't be that great anyway. Whereas with a deluxe edition, they have (unfortunately) shown that they only really need to put 2 or 3 outtakes on along with a few live tracks, alternate takes or 'jams' and they probably have better sales because of the familiarity of the pre-existing material.

Yes, you are probably right. I would love an outtakes album personally - I was just looking at it from their point of view.
I do think a Voodoo Lounge deluxe could do well though. To my mind, that is as memorable both in terms of music and artwork as say GHS or B&B. But that may just be my age.

Sales of Black and Blue were terrible, barely 1 week in the UK charts and it was the first deluxe edition that didn't enter the US Top 200. If the Stones don't do anything to increase their popularity, sales will get worse and worse since old fans are dying faster than new fans are joining.

Surely all of the VL outtakes are already out there in excellent quality anyway (Brew, Stew, Residue)?

Yes, quite frankly, who apart from die-hard collectors would be interested in a deluxe version of this album, and for what (yet another) disastrous sales result...

But they are often “instrumentals” or vocal click tracks if you will. Mick would have to record a heap of actual vocals to make them interesting I’d reckon. I have all 3 boxes (used to be able to buy bootlegs in Singapore, sadly not the case for just over a decade and I could not believe it when the store I frequented up there (I’m in Perth) had all 3 boxes on the counter one day. Expensive day for me!
And, someone a few posts back mentioned a “mountain of outtakes”. A mountain of doodles is a mountain of doodles. Are there really a mountain of SONGS? Because a considerable amount of those 3 Voodoo boxes are really just doodles, nice doodles, but doodles nevertheless! I don’t play ‘em much nowadays.

...and is emotional rescue even with it's massive trove of outtakes popular enough to justify putting the money into a project like this?
sadly i think iorr is more likely since it contains a bigger hit for them in the form or the title track, a more memorable cover and of course mick taylor

BLACK AND BLUE wasn't a big seller in 1976, especially in the UK. Even UNDERCOVER comparatively sold more than EOMS, IORR and BAB!!!
ER, their twelfth most selling album, sold much better than EOMS - 18th, IORR - 22, and BAB - 23, did, and the ER single charted much higher than IORR did.
The EOMS stand alone bonus disc debuted at number 27 and sold 15,000 copies. The reissue debuted at number one in the UK and number two in the US with 76,000 copies sold.
Perhaps because it's EOMS it did well but also they hadn't done anything since 2005 other than the tour doc and the movie/live album. Plundered My Soul probably shocked some people and there was a documentary about the album.
The 2010 super deluxe had DVDs of the new documentary, the Robert Frank documentary and LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.
Although ER doesn't need a remix the bonus material would certainly be interesting. They recorded over 40 songs, 10 that were on the album, 5 on TATTOO YOU, one B-side, five were released on the SOME GIRLS bonus and two on the TY bonus. There's still some good material that could be released. They could even do what they did with the SG bonus only opposite and include Misty Roads, Rotten Roll, I Love You Too Much, Never Let Her Go and What Gives You The Right from the SG sessions. Hell, why not throw in some leftovers from UNDERCOVER since they're not really into accuracy about the representation of the dedicated album.
There's the 'guitar mix' edit of the title track and the unedited version. Think I'm Going Mad - possibly the only song in history that has "sup a cup of coffee" in it. Dance 3.
A remix of Neighbours that includes the cymbals would be great. This version is a rough mix of the 1981 overdubs for the album. It's obvious more work was done on it.
With no live material to release the focus would be on the bonus material.

... In France the first album released was GOATS HEAD SOUP. That is to say that according to them no single copy from the Big Four has been sold in that market. In Germany the first one to count was - you love this, Skippy - DIRTY WORK! So, for example, SOME GIRLS has sold 0 copies there. In UK most of the 60's albums are not counted, including - for some odd reason - even their first one that was a HUGE hit album at the time and sold almost a million copies (as has been traditionally estimated).Quote

Other than the so-called 'diehards', what would the general interest be in an Emotional Rescue 'Deluxe'? Didn't the Black & Blue Deluxe sell appallingly? I'm far from saying that I'm against the idea, but would the Stones corporation be prepared to put in the required effort, if there is limited financial reward?

gls to doxa's above point i just feel that iorr is more better remembered then emotional rescue and that it's title track is more dated or "flavor of the month" then iorr's title track even if they both sold well iorr (the song) has aged better
