1. between 1982 and 1988 he must have had a lot of spare time: what did he do iñthose years
2. why is his 1981 solo album so hard to get? was there never a reprint?

1981 solo album so hard to get?

Do you mean '1234'? It's available digitally: [www.Qobuz.com] , [Music.Apple.com] , [open.Spotify.com] , [www.YouTube.com] .

Some painting, fiddling around in the studio, and a lot of drugs and drinking!

He toured with, among others, Bo Diddley and Totta Näslund between 85-88.

Fun memory: I permanently damaged my friendship with my junior year college roommate by playing 1234 (the entire album) so much. (Hey, it was MY stereo!)

Because it's terrible. A bunch of mediocre riffs in search of a song.

My favorite line from the AMG review says, [the song] 'Wind Howlin' Through' asks if the listener can hear that, but little more."

Gimme Some Neck is 10,000 times better, even with the brittle production.

Don't forget he actually spent time on making two Stones albums between 1983 and 1986. On Dirty Work he and Keith were the main contributors. He is very loyal to the band.
Drugs? Surely, but I have a feeling he shaped up at same point during those years. He has always been able to keep things going despite his, sometimes, overindulgence in drugs.
He is a survivor in that sense.

The real question is what happened between 2010 and now?

Looking back at the Stones' individual members lifestyle & a bored Bill I'm not surprised that Jagger went solo in the 8-tees.

Check out Nico Zentgraf's "Woodworks" webpage. He also worked with Bill German on his biography during the 1980s + opened up a nightclub in Miami.

And especially Charlie was a wreck with his heroine addiction.

Weren't there plans by Mark Pines to make a documentary about Ronnie somewhere in the 80s?

Just as long as the guitar plays, let it steal your heart away

He did that insane Gunslinger tour with Bo Diddley that I saw a few times.

That's correct. Good old Charlie. I still miss him.

Ronnie published a book named "Ronnie" ;-)
You probably find most information in there ...

The album 1234 is full of good ideas; some songs could even have been taken up by the Stones with the appropriate adjustments. If we are to believe the biographies, Ron Wood does not seem to have been in the best condition to give his best. The laid-back style seems to suggest as much.
