A true legend of (reggae) music. One of the greats. He sang so many great songs that there are simply too many to list. He was also a kind spirit that transmitted positive vibrations only. I can't tell you how much I listened to him. I love Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Desmond Dekker, Gregory Isaacs, Toots & The Maytals and others, they were all great, but one could argue that Jimmy was as influential for reggae as Bob Marley. A huge influence. I will play some of his songs tonight. I'm sure that Keith will light up a spliff in his honor as well. I think They Harder They Come is one of his all time favorite albums. Rightly so!
I have told this story before, but I saw Cliff at the Roxy in LA. He and the band were wonderful. The sound was spot on. Look at a player and you could hear what they played exactly. Ian Dury opened for Cliff. Ronnie and Jo sat the next table over. After Dury's set they went backstage or upstairs. Ronnie was having a good time. A second nod for the THTC soundtrack. Love that record.
I think Jimmy's music is something beyond reggae, an exquisite blend of soul, pop and reggae of course. Saw him live here in Argentina and had the chance to shake hands with him after the concert.
Hope some day , sooner than later, somebody take care of his discography.
Sad to hear never got to see the great man in concert…..Will nod also to “The harder they come”A Brilliant record….We have lost many Jamaican Musicians and legends in the last few years….Peace.M
