Bill is a one-off. Period.
Bill's importance to THAT sound the band had up until 1990 still goes so under-acknowledged. The track with Bill on Diamonds proves how much difference his playing makes even if he just overdubbed his part. His playing along with Charlie's was the backbone for Keef and Mick and those two really needed a solid and reliable foundation. Charlie and Bill were the salt and pepper in that voodoo stew cooked up by the Glimmer Twins. Without Bill and Charlie, that stew would have been inedible.
And Bill is not only one of the greats but a very humble and genuinely nice individual.
I am so grateful that he is still giving us music and books. I have always admired him for having the courage to leave the band and not going into retirement and disappearing in 1990. In a way, he is as active as any of the current Stones. I am sure, today Keef also understands and respects Bill's decision to leave them behind, and perhaps not only understands it but holds him in high regards because he stayed true to himself and has not wasted away his talents and years since he left them. The Rhythm Kings was a band that had very little to do with making him or anyone in the band a fortune. It was pure joy. It also was music that had very little to do with the Stones and their influences. Again, it was all about Bill staying true to himself.
Happy Birthday! Can't wait to say this again next year when he turns 90.
I just hope he knows how much he means to many of us.

Thanks a lot for your great bass job with the Stones then with the Rhythm Kings, and for your books about History as well.
