Interesting that their most famous song - Satisfaction, doesn't even make it to top ten...

Yes, also that Paint It, Black isn’t there either. Most polls have it near the top. I think our poll, with participants who know the Stones’ discography intimately, is the truest reflection of what fans like. For example: if the BBC conducted a top-50 fans’ vote, I don’t think Moonlight Mile would be where it’s sitting, here.

Keep voting, everyone!

I've been avoiding this thread for a long time, because it's too difficult. But OK, I'll give it a try.

STUDIO:
1. Gimme Shelter
2. Jumpin' Jack Flash
3. Sympathy for the Devil
4. Brown Sugar
5. Can't You Hear Me Knocking?

For top LIVE tracks I would add Midnignt Rambler, Street Fighting Man and Out of Control.

1 Rocks Off
There's so much in the first thirty seconds and none of it speaks of anything that's pristine. After that they deliver a haze infused with energy. Pity about the wee sweary in the middle that put it beyond the reach of all but the most unwary DJ

2 Sympathy For The Devil
Flabby indulgence being smited and the suggested renewal is invigorating. L Cohen and his Anthem "there's a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in" gives similar optimism.
Better still and with every whoo whoo, from Roundhay Park to Aintree, I'm part of an epoch straddling two centuries

3 Faraway Eyes
For no other reason than playing it in our car, looking in the rear view mirror and my daughter giving in to the singalong. The treasure of a snapshot of time.

4 Gimme Shelter
The brooding source of the song is dramatic enough for most.
The studio version with doom, noises off and artistic excellence then birthed a thrilling live show. What's not to like about Keith's smile when Lisa was unleashed?

5 Let It Loose
Although I could tell he was authoritative, I didn't know just who he was but what Alexis Korner did in this context was to host a weekly show on BBC Radio 1 in the 1970s. At the end of the song he shared who had produced such an piece. I couldn't quite believe that something so novel to me differed so much to mid sixties sounds.
So started the life journey.

I count now 120 votings (MichaelLassen already voted in november)

@ MichaelLassen
You already voted in November.
4 of the 5 songs are identical.

Your 5th song in November was "Depending On You," but now your 5th song is "Wild Horses" — which song should I finally count ?

120?? There were moments when I thought our greatest-ever poll was over, but a little gentle prodding seemingly gets the voters in! I see that our top-ten has really taken shape, and I do suspect that as this wonderful poll continues, a more defined top-20 will eventually take shape. Thank you to Nankstone for faithfully keeping count thumbs up

Some analytics for the statistical nerds amongst us:

With 51 tracks on our 3-votes upwards list, I have calculated the following percentages:

60’s recordings: 29%
70’s recordings: 59%
80’s recordings: 12%
90’s onwards: ZERO%

It seems like the 70’s is the favourite decade.

Re: Top 5 Stones tracks

Thanks for the statistical analytics, Big Al.

Clearly, the 60s and 70s are the most frequently mentioned and (i think) the best years overall, even though there are excellent songs in every decade.
But, there are also a few songs from 1990 onwards in our voting list, but each only has one vote (except one song with two votes).

1990-1999 - 8 songs
2000-2009 - 4 songs
2010-2019 - 0 songs
2020-2026 - 4 songs (including "Tell Me Straight" with two votes)

Let's see if our voting is really over with the 120 member votes, or if anyone else would like to vote.thumbs up

If our great poll was launched towards the end of 2023, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Sweet Sound of Heaven made the list, or, at least, was just bubbling under. As the voting hopefully continues - slowly, admittedly! - we may get some unexpected entries. There’s still a quite apparent - and surprising - absence of 60’s hits. Still, the participants in the poll are all big fans, who know their discography intimately; it is only natural that there are many, many, so-called ‘deep-cuts’ throughout the top-50 and, indeed, the top-ten; Moonlight Mile being the glaring standout in that regard,

Keep on voting, everyone!
