Stoneage's 'subjective' list should be approved?

Re: Top 5 Stones tracks

Let's wait for Stoneage's decision which of the 2 lists should count.

Re: Top 5 Stones tracks

1. Jumping Jack Flash
2. Honky Tonk Women
3. Start Me Up
4. Satisfaction
5. Brown Sugar

This is the list that an encyclopedia would carry. They are not necessarily my favourites, but they would all make my Top 10 except for Brown Sugar that does not do much for me.

My personal Top 20:

1. Jumping Jack Flash
2. Ruby Tuesday
3. Honky Tonk Women
4. Start Me Up
5. Satisfaction
6. Under My Thumb
7. Child Of The Moon
8. Please Go Home
9. Had It With You
10. It's All Over Now
11. 19th Nervous Breakdown
12. Little Red Rooster
13. Can't You Hear Me Knockin'
14. Wish I'd Never Met You
15. Slipping Away
16. Till The Next Goodbye
17. No Expectations
18. Jump On Top Of Me
19. Street Fighting Man
20. Hot Stuff

47 correct votes so far (I didn't count "PIB" in ManuelStones' vote)
4 uncounted votes from members (GJV & HardRiffin = 6 songs / Stoneage = 2 lists with 5 songs / matatu = 7 songs)

When we get 50 correct votes, I'll post the results here.

I counted again, with the vote of "frenki09" now 48 correct votes winking smiley

Historically in regard to importance a chronological order makes sense:

Satisfaction
Jumpin' Jack Flash
Brown Sugar
Miss You
Start Me Up

HTW is left out to favor Start Me Up even though, Stones wise, they're equal in importance. SMU is possibly more important culturally given the amount of times it's been played at sporting events over the decades and given that exposure plus the Super Bowl and the Microsoft commercial it's probably their best/most known song.

My personal Top 5 constantly changes, sometimes in particular order, but overall:

Gimme Shelter
CYHMK or Slave
Time Waits For No One or Dancing With Mr D or Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo
Shattered or She's So Cold or Neighbours
Tie You Up

Nankstone: Please count my "subjective" list. Forget about the other one. Thanks.

@ Stoneage : Ok, your personal list is counted.

@ GasLightStreet : Which list should i counted, the historical or the personal one?
If you want to use the personal one, please limit it to 5 songs. winking smiley

My list of early candidates is no overall list. Such a list I am not able to set up.

@ Witness : In Barkerboy2's initial post says "Top 5 Stones Tracks" (headline) or "We had to name our top 5. Only 5." - nothing about "historical songs" or "overall lists", etc.
I don't know now if I should count your 5 songs, should I ?

@ wolundamo : Your Songs are counted.

@Witness: Okay, I'll count your top 5 if you're okay with that, so we'll have 50 correct votes.

I don't want to list all the songs here, so I'll leave out all the songs with only one and two votes.

With 50 members, each with 5 songs, that makes 250 songs in total.
51 songs with only 1 vote
11 songs with only 2 votes

3 votes for
2000 Light Years From Home
Hand Of Fate
Loving Cup
Memory Motel
Slave
Stray Cat Blues
Worried About You

4 votes for
Paint It Black
Sway
Wild Horses

5 votes for
Satisfaction
Time Waits For No One

6 votes for
All Down The Line
Can't You Hear Me Knocking
Monkey Man
Start Me Up

Tumbling Dice

7 votes for
Sympathy For The Devil
Winter

8 votes for
Honky Tonk Woman

11 votes for

So it is time for...

How could that be?
I cannot believe it!
This can't be true!
Whatttt?

(I can't get no) Satisfaction, a milestone in music history, probably the one song everyone in the whole wide world has heard of gets 5 votes compared to Gimme Shelter getting 23... My feeling is that perhaps it was not included in many of the lists because it would have been too obvious of a choice.

Honky Tonk Women is pure Stones. In my humble opinion, it is the track that no other band could have written. It is genius from start to finish. There is not a single note that was not meant to be. It is perfection. It is the "stonesiest" song in their catalogue.

Start Me Up. I still cannot figure out what is going on in the song but it works wonders. Strangely enough, I feel that it is Charlie and Bill holding the song together and Bill is as vital to the song's success as he is to Satisfaction. The bass is like a lead instrument in some way. Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top said something similar but he is better with words.
"Two Stones songs have done that to me," he continued. "There's 'Start Me Up' – it's very difficult to find the downbeat in the intro until they finally kick it in – and the other one is a Keith solo song called 'Take It So Hard. Man,' it's so riveting! So it was a Keith Richards-inspired day of soloing, which means… it just happened!"
And the video for Start Me Up is the one I never get tired of watching. It is the Stones when it was not yet about spending a fortune on having Angelina Jolie walk down a street or Kristen Stewart driving a car. I love how they did not mind Jagger forgetting to mime some of the words in the final cut. That is NOT something Jagger would approve of today. smiling smiley

Yes, Satisfaction is one of their most famous songs and it put them on the map. For that matter, Angie is another one of their most famous songs and it didn't get voted not even once. Satisfaction is great in many ways and as a single to draw attention, especially then, it's perfect. But for an overall enjoyment of the Stones craft, they have better songs.

Gimme Shelter has something that is very hard to achieve: magic, something that cannot be planned or explained (although it has a lot to do with Mery Clayton).

I agree that in many ways the studio version of Start Me Up is a fantastic example of "weaving" guitars and drums and bass and Mick. But live it's never that good (neither is Gimme Shelter by the way).

Yes, Start Me Up loses something live, never liked any of the live versions, but I do not get tired of the studio version.

All of the TATTOO YOU videos are hilariously bad. The guitar miming is ridiculous. Mick missing whatever. Only Charlie and Bill are "serious". Of course prior videos going back to IORR and even GHS are just as funny.

They got brilliant with the UNDERCOVER videos, combining the ridiculous miming with a hilarity, especially with She Was Hot, but UOTN and TMB are over the top. Some were still silly, like One Hit, Sex Drive and Love Is Strong but nothing like they used to be.

After 1983-84 it was more and more serious, except as noted, until the videos, like Anybody Seen My Baby and Out Of Tears, were very short movies.

Lately they've been simply stupid.

Currently, there are 6 new votes since the first overall count.
