The Berlin Waldbühne is one of the most beautiful open-air stages in Europe. After the war, it was used as an open-air cinema, as a venue for the Berlinale, and as a venue for boxing matches and rock concerts. During the Rolling Stones' first German tour 60 years ago, there were riots and property damage, meaning the stage could not be used for an extended period. The Rolling Stones did not return to the Waldbühne until 1982. In the following years, the Rolling Stones performed there three more times, most recently during the Sixty Tour in 2022.
All five Rolling Stones concerts were compiled by Olaf Boehme and me into a documentary, which will be presented on October 19th at the Hofgeismar City Museum, where the exhibition "Private Audience with the Rolling Stones" is currently running.
Volker Rebell wrote, among other things, in his foreword: "The Stones and their music were a threat to the conservative, staid society at the time. And the media representing them ridiculed the long-haired band and their 'uncouth Hottentot music.'"
In these difficult times for Beat fans, two high school students from Hofgeismar in Hesse made their way to Münster to meet the Rolling Stones on their first German tour. Their "private audience" naturally cannot be omitted from this documentary, even though it didn't take place at the Waldbühne, but is likely unique in the world.
We would especially like to thank Axel Schumacher, who was at the Waldbühne in 1965 and described his impressions and the sequence of events in detail.
We would also like to express our sincere gratitude for the wonderful photographs provided by Peter Zehner, Neil Ebden,
Andreas Laloi, Birgit Dollmann, Frank Wehner, Dirk Wengler, Markus Zepf, Silas Demel, and Nico Zentgraf.
Uli Kniep and Michael Sonntag also contributed to this documentation, which is published in a hardcover format (A4 format) with 178 pages in German and English, and we would also like to take this opportunity to thank them for their support.
