It's hard for me to rank, but I have a lot of love for Emotional Rescue and Undercover. Undercover is a top 5 Stones album for me-- I think it's the smartest and most mature album , and then after that it was like every album was trying to capture something from the past. I enjoy breaking out each of the 80's/90's/2000's records from time to time, but Undercover is just a super sharp, solid, rocking album that sounds great every time I listen. To me, Dirty Work is the one with horrid 80s production, but Undercover just has great sounding drums, vocals and guitars, and really good songwriting. And I love the rawness of Emotional Rescue. Just two fantastic albums, imho.

Not easy choosing between Tattoo You and Some Girls. Maybe TY wins because they had the large tour while SG had less of a spectacle. Anyhow, 1981-82 was the first big time in my Stones fandom.

Some Girls win because it is an original album while Tatoo You is a collection of leftovers from the 70s.

I’ve never understood this trail of thought. Whilst it is true that Tattoo You is a collection of ‘leftovers’, it was marketed as a ‘new’ album and, quite frankly, it’s fresh, and for me, a stronger record than the - overrated - Some Girls.

I agree. Some Girls is fun, but very dated. Tattoo You has much more longevity.

1.SG
2. TY
3. Goat's Head Soup
4. Steel Wheels (emotional attachment as first one I bought)
5. Black and Blue
6. Undercover
7. Voodoo
8. IORR
9. Emotional Rescue
9. Bridges
10. Bigger Bang
11. Hackney Diamonds
12. Dirty Work

But have to say, 4-11 are all pretty close. They've been pretty consistent really.

Another way to look at it is to study their biggest hits since Exile.
From the top of my head I would rank the 5 biggest hits like this:

1. Start Me Up - TY
2. It's Only R&R - IORR
3. Angie - GHS
4. Miss You - SG
5. Beast of Burden - SG

Odd, out of all the people that said TY is their favorite you chose me to contradict. Thanks for the attention.spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

well, it's nothing personal but in contrast to other who just provided lists you pointed out reasons for your choice

I think it is personal. Why don't you elaborate on some of your answers in a personal way. That way you can be attacked too. If you're brave enough that is. In other words how about just let me have an opinion and share my thoughts. They're not so bad.

I might be in the minority here but I think Tattoo as aged better than Some Girls. The slow side is just so damn good.

One of the best album sides ever recorded.

I don’t think Some Girls needs to age. It captures a time & place like no other Stones album.

To echo an earlier post on here, I don’t care that TY is ‘leftovers’. Those tracks make for one heckuva LP. I love it.

I think it’s great that we all love this band and their music so much and yet there are some pretty sharp contrasts in how we rank their LPs.

[In chronological order]
Some Girls
Tatoo You
Hackney Diamonds

I didn’t used to hold Tatoo You in high esteem. My initial impression of TY was, “This is like leftover food heated up in a microwave. Doesn’t taste — sound — fresh.” That was a while before it turned out that the material used was in fact from the previous recording sessions. It felt to me like a more or less conservative work, The Rolling Stones playing it safe, especially after the one-two punch of Some Girls and Emotional Rescue, their punk (SG) and New Wave (ER) attempts. I recall an IORR forum member describing Start Me Up as ‘the first Stones song by numbers’, which I thought was on the nail. On the whole the album lacks ‘edge’ IMHO.

After decades of leaving it unplayed, I gave it a listen one day from beginning to end, and it sounded much better than I remembered the way it was. The song craft identified itself with its inherent beauty, a revelation for me. Conservative or lack of edginess notwithstanding, this is a good album. After all, it is the quality that has the final say.

Wow, many have Tattoo over Some Girls ... which is odd since 'almost' every song on Some Girls is better that almost every song on Tattoo You. Anyway ...

Some Girls
Black And Blue
Hackney Diamonds
Goats Head Soup
Tattoo You
It's Only Rock'N'Roll
Blue And Lonesome
Emotional Rescue
Voodoo Lounge
Bridges To Babylon
A Bigger Bang
Undercover
Steel Wheels
Dirty Work

Brussels'73. Simple to me, albeit a boot.

Yes, but....The best version is the first broadcast, with Gimme Shelter, Happy, heartbreaker and SFM from Wembley replacing the Brussels tracks.

Tattoo You

Emotional Rescue
Some Girls
B2B
IORR
B&B
Goats Head
Steel Wheels
Bigger Bang

There's no need to rate the rest in my opinion. They simply do not mean much to me.

why rank when you can enjoy it all?

I think Some Girls is on par with the 1968-72 run. Maybe "Lies" dings it a little, but the rest of the album is so strong it's easy to overlook. It was a very important record that definitively answered whether or not the band could stand strong against punk and disco. It's an important record for them and one of their best.

Tattoo You is excellent. Yes, it's technically leftovers, but the album is remarkably cohesive and the quality of music is undeniable. The way the album is structured is just brilliant. Great, natural flow.

Next is a tie between Goat's Head Soup, Black and Blue, and Hackney Diamonds, all of which get an 8 out of 10. Some slight blemishes, but the strongest material absolutely holds up against their best work.

I rank the rest as follows:

- Bridges to Babylon
- A Bigger Bang
- Undercover
- Voodoo Lounge
- Steel Wheels
- Dirty Work

Blue and Lonesome is its own thing so I don't really rank it, but it's great for what it is.

This topic is kind of useless and speculative.

I’m actually surprised that nobody remembers Mick clearly saying back in 2005 that A Bigger Bang is their best album since Exile. He repeated it everywhere - interviews, press, pre-release - like some sacred mantra. Comparing Bigger Bang to Exile became almost a National Anthem that year.

So what are you all buzzing about now? We already have the truth, delivered by the prophet himself. Mick said it - therefore it must be true. Case closed.

I guess you missed my point and/or I didnt make it clear enough. What I wanted to say; I considered you post worthwhile replying to because you gave reasons for prefering TY to SG. On the other hand I do not consider it worthwhile replying to lists without reasons.
I didn't intend any offense!

I don’t believe any of the Stones albums since Tattoo You are playable start to finish the way their earlier releases are. There are substandard tracks on each of them.

Having said that, I’m happy the boys kept making LPs because there are also songs that I like quite a bit scattered throughout those releases.

Taking Blue & Lonesome out of the equation, A Bigger Bang is my first choice if I have to listen to a post-Tattoo LP from start to finish. I think it has more high points and fewer low points than the others.

Post Tattoo You, the only album I still see as a serious album is Undercover but admittedly it has 3 or 4 subpar songs on it. The rest have their occasional highlights but too many songs to skip.

I enjoyed Blue & Lonesome for about a week, before coming to the realisation that if I want 'R&B' and 'Bluesy Stones', I'll listen to their pre-Aftermath albums. There isn't anything inherently wrong with the record, it's just a bit disposable. I really don't think they needed to make it. At least Dirty Work has some interesting history to it.

thumbs up

Yeah, that's pretty much spot-on; especially when considering 'global hits' Start Me Up being their last, of course.

As true as that may be, Tattoo You sounds more modern, or rather, more timeless than Some Girls. Some Girls clearly has an "end of the 70s" feel to it, what with the punk and disco influences.
TY doesn't sound like the 70s at all, even when some of them were originally conceived in the 70s. I guess this is partly because of production, partly because of added overdubs and partly the songs were very good to begin with. Tops is a good example of that.

Wow, many have Tattoo over Some Girls ... which is odd since 'almost' every song on Some Girls is better that almost every song on Tattoo You. Anyway ...

SG:
Miss You: great, original, the Stones upping their game
When The Whip Comes Down: funny, worked great live, but not a great song
Imagination: rather boring, really
Some Girls: funny but predictable, obvious
Lies: not a very good rocker
Faraway Eyes: too much tongue in cheek, funny lyrics are fine but if I want parody I buy a comedian's album
Respectable: punky Chuck Berry. Okayish but ages fast
Before They Make Me Run: Good. I like the lyrics better than the song though.
Beast Of Burden: absolutely splendid soulful song. Brilliant.
Shattered: great mixture of punk and doo-wop

TY:
Start Me Up: a killer of a song. Everything about it, drums, base, guitars, voices are perfect. Perfection.
Hang Fire: boring rocker, filler
Slave: delicious. Only the Stones could come up with something like this. Loose, rocking, soulful. Perfection.
Little T&A: groovy rocker. Good lyrics.
Black Limousine: straight up 12(13)-bar blues done perfectly
Neighbours: just great fun, both lyrics, voice and guitars having a blast
Worried About You: Perfection
Tops: Perfection
Heaven: Perfection. Sounds like nothing they did before or after but fits in wonderfully.
Ain't No Use For Crying: Perfection. Interesting rhythm.
Waiting On A Friend: absolute masterpiece.

Both SG and TY have an overall sound that keeps them together.
I think TY is winning here, though.

I just about completely agree with. I think many of the tracks on Some Works worked better live than on the album

Tattoo You is perfection to me. I don't really know which album is better, Exile or TY, but I do play TY more often.
