A name I am most certainly familiar with, yet I know little about his role. Can anyone here be so kind as to explain his position within the Stones’ organisation?

Rest in peace, Alan Dunn

So sad to hear this. He was an ever present face wherever I hung around the hotels, a great, kind man.

Live Forever Alan

RIP Alan Dunn.

Being close to The Stones and their touring party means I met the Dunn brothers many times. See the IORR thread:

Very sorry to hear. He was quite kind to me back in 1995 in Mexico City with assisting in getting a photo signed. RIP.

Wasn’t there a story about Alan and his brother getting lost at sea in like 1979 near Nassau and the stones helped with the rescue???

It was Alan Dunn and his girlfriend (wife?) Ramona Herman that went missing on the 6th of February 1979 in a small dinghy (according to Bill Wyman). The Stones cancelled their recording session in Nassau and provided for planes to search the ocean. On the 8th of February they were found and picked up by a yacht. Apparently this led to the title Emotional Rescue!

Does anyone know the details of how and when he got involved with the band, what his role was? If I remember correctly, his name even appeared on album covers.

Take a look at the tour programs. Every tour (mostly) have a tour program, with names and responsibilities on a separate page, see thread I linked to in an earlier post here. Also, many in the touring party have several responsibilities, during shows, during travel, between shows etc.

I think I saw Alan Dunn in charge of logistics in transportation, many years ago now, i.e. cars and people to and from shows and other locations.

Yes. It was in early February 1979 during the second round of ER sessions.

Now that I saw a picture of Alan I remember him well. In 2007 Dusseldorf I paid a high price for seats close to the stage. At show time they re-arranged them and now we were on the end. So I looked for somebody (turned out to be Alan) and told him, he left us for a minute and then led us over near the soundboard where I sat next to Doro Pesch. Always thought it was nice of him to help us out. R.I.P.

I was leafing through A Life on the Road. The book is filled with quotes, memories and observations by Alan Dunn. It's quite incredible what a journey he's had with the band. A few excerpts that gives an idea of his importance:

"Even in the late 60s we were still all together in a mobile home, everybody, and we'd drive in the car park deliberately and go all through the crowd so they could see what was going on. There was no personal assistant. Ian Stewart would be looking after the back line equipment and I would be taking care of the band."

"In the early days we'd somehow get hold of a brand-new van. We'd drive through the night and come to a border and I'd push all my hair up into my hat because it was quite long and the border guards still had this thing about long-haired hippie travellers. At one border the guy made me take my hat off and that was it. Everything out of the back, all the equipment out, and Ian's going Bloody Germans… That's why I never got bananas until I was eight because of them."

"In the 60s, early 70s, Mick was the only one with a wardrobe. It consisted of one suitcase, and I remember carrying that."

"During the filming of @#$%& Blues, Robert Frank would say 'I don't have any orgy scenes' or 'I don't have any heavy drinking scenes' and to some degree we had to manufacture them. The famous scene on the aeroplane was very much manufactured."

"It's customised Boieng 727 which normally have 200 seats but has been customised down to 59 seats. Four very private compartments and a big luxury bar. All the rest is first-class seating sleeper seats. Not that anybody sleeps."

"The immediate touring party around the band is usually about 50, personal assistants and security, press and family as well. But the whole party when we're moving show to show is just under 300."

"Scotland Yard thought it would be a nightmare. I heard them talking to each other - 'You know it's a rock and roll show, they're going all mad and they smash the stage.' Anyway, we got them, and they came back and afterwards they said they couldn't believe how well organised it was."

Yes what a crazy time back then. And also what a crazy development from chaos to the most organised unit in rock history. The Stones and their crew were pioneers of touring, figuring out logistics etc. Alan Dunn was central in all of that. Someone asked when he started working for The Stones, i believe it was 1967.
