Outtakes on Exile, Goats, Some Girls and Tatoo re-releases
Posted by: INDIANO ()

Perhaps a difficult question and probably a long answer: which songs in the outtakes in question are completely original without overdubs? By exclusion, the remaining ones have had overdubs. This has certainly been discussed in various forums but I would try to summarize if possible. Thanks.

Good idea ! I looked into that myself a while back, going through the threads and couldn't come up with anything definitive. I was after those that didn't have a rerecorded vocal for a start but...there's probably none.

Hopefully the "jams" on B&B will be the first "untouched" outtakes !

I'm gonna guess 'zero'. And that's fine by me.

Maybe Sophia Loren?

Assuming you mean songs that aren't early versions or alternate takes of released tracks, going through each of the re-releases the only ones I can point to that do not have any overdubs are:

EXILE
Title 5

Goats
Criss Cross

Some Girls
Claudine
We Had It All
Petrol Blues

Tattoo You
Drift Away

I don’t think Good Time Women or the Japanese version of All Down The Line have any modern overdubs.

I Ain’t Signifying has new harmonica I believe, but is very close to original.

Oh course, Soul Survivor is period authentic.

You can compare the instrumentals of Dancing in the Light and Aladdin’s Story to the bonus cuts to see what they’ve changed. Sophia Loren is not publicly available, but I’m not going to be mad if somebody wants to share it

Goats: Hide Your Love sounds period authentic. So does 100 Years and the instrumentals. All the Rage just has new vocals.

Yes!! You are absolutely right.

Criss Cross has a guitar overdub by Wood, Claudine has a piano overdub and likely an acoustic guitar overdub.

I don't think We Had it All has a modern overdub.

I thought 100 years ago on the deluxe was from the 90s?!

As far as I know still not confirmed when it was recorded, but it sounds like the late 1980's or 1990's. There's more of these piano demo's, like Memory Motel and Time Waits for No One.

Another question. Where comes the great song Plundered My Soul from. I can‘t find any bootlegs which sound like that song. Nothing with words, but also not the music. Not that I know or have all the bootlegs of course…. spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

I don’t think Wood was involved on the Goats project and the FFSO version of Criss Cross sounds like the released version. This song was done and ready to be used on the album until they swapped in Hide Your Love

According to timeisonourside.com additional recordings were done April-June 2020. Looking at the lineup, it must have been Mick overdubbing some of the vocals.

Doesn't sound like a 90's Jagger. 100 Years Ago sounds absolutely authentic to me.

It was a hard one to distinguish re: '100 Years Ago' piano demo, it sounded so perfect you'd wonder was it really from 1972/1973. The voice seemed to me to be 70s Mick, but, like all of us, I'd be very interested too to know when this was actually done.

Re: Outtakes on Exile, Goats, Some Girls and Tatoo re-releases

Mick falls out of the melody a couple of times, and that lead me to believe it was not period authentic. It's hard to tell, really.

It's really hard to tell...but the piano sounds too modern to me, it doesn't sound like a 1970's acoustic piano but something from the late 1980's or 1990's. It doesn't sound like Nicky Hopkins to me as well, but more like Chuck Leavell or Matt Clifford.

Melody wise it certainly is not a demo as the melody and lyrics are fully developed. This version was recorded after the album version was recorded. The singing style and voice sound like 1970's Jagger to me, except for the middel 8, the 'You're gonna kiss and say good-bye' part sounds awfully lot like the Primitive Cool era Jagger, when he also did this piano version of Memory Motel.

In tape trading circles this version of 100 Years Ago was available for quite some time, coupled with Time Waits, Memory Motel and Fool to Cry that were labeled as '1993 Mick Jagger Piano demo's'. The label could be wrong of course, but at the time no one doubted the label.

It has the exact guitar and drum sound as Tumbling Dice, so likely from Nellcote 1971.

You are correct about Criss Cross, I mixed it up with Living in the Heart of Love, which has a Wood overdub.

Yeah, I could see him overdubbing more vocals.

Yes, this sounds right to me. Following the River and Sophia Loren as well.

So do we think there any original lead vocals in what was released apart from "Good Time Women" ?

Maybe these are versions that were prepared for the Virgin reissues that were definitely planned with bonus tracks at one point. That was mentioned by Manoeuvre in R&F in late 93 or early 94.

Correct, not 90s ... it sounds like 2010s Jagger to me.

Re: Outtakes on Exile, Goats, Some Girls and Tatoo re-releases

I think it's hard to tell the originals from the newer versions in some cases.

In some cases you can clearly tell but in others it could all be original just mixed differently or the guitars/vocals made more prominent that the originals.

Each of the reissues has a few better tracks.

I think they should have just made a standalone album of 70's unreleased tracks. I think it would have sold better than the reissues.

They have made the reissues too expensive.

100 Years Ago piano demo is def not 2010 Jagger.

I think it has Billy Preston's piano sound.
