OT: Its the 50th Anniversary of The Rocky Horror Picture Show!

I feel like this isn't incredibly offtopic around here, since it deals with the 70s and music, but I could see if its a divisive topic that people either love it or hate it. But its the 50th Anniversary of the seminal film The Rocky Horror Picture Show, which came out in September of 1975 and has held the title of "longest running film in theaters" for quite awhile now I believe, still showing up weekly as a midnight movie all over the country.

Not sure how many others are fans around here. I will admit, I was shown this when I was far too young and most of it flew right over my head. My dad showed me the movie back when it was on AMC and they were known to have no or very limited commercials. I was about 10, and when explaining it to my mother (who I can't believe agreed) said "I think he'll like the music and think its funny." He ended up being 100% right, cause I missed all the sex stuff and as a fan of 60s and 70s music at that age just loved the music and thought it was a hysterical movie. Tim Curry captivated me, Richard O Brien's songs enthralled me, and the band in the songs is kickass, with The Who's "Rabbit" being apart of the band, as well as members of Procol Harum at the time on drums and guitar.

I uniquely honestly never got into the whole theatrics of it. I appreciate what it means to people, but I never had a huge desire to see it in theaters or throw things at the screen. I'm the rare person that would rather watch it at home or listen to the album than put a V on my head in lipstick representing I'm a virgin to seeing it live. But I'm glad that's given the film such a life of its own and been so helpful to gay, trans and people who just didn't feel like they fit in. Personally, I just liked it in the same way I liked The Beatles or the Stones or a broadway musical or the Mary Poppins soundtrack. Interesting visuals with great songs. Can't believe its 50 years old. There's a lot of special events happening in LA at the end of this month for anniversary weekend, and a new documentary that's coming out, but I assume this has resonated with some around here! I'm not sure if "real" music people looked down on this or embraced it as just as good as a lot of other stuff coming out at the time. I've always seen it as the "rock and roll musical".

Wow, I actually didn't know that! I can very easily see it, but its truly impossible to imagine anyone else in that role other than Tim! One of many incredibly legendary roles he's had, and I'm glad he settled into his legacy with this.

completely agree possibly owing to the fact that tim had played the character onstage before the film and new how to do the character just right

although i heard bowie was offered the role and turned it down that may have been interesting too

there's also several video games based on it

commodore 64

and a recent retro style platformer

but this is my favorite

developed closely with richard o'brien (who also stars in it) and christopher lee narrating it

if your fan of bizarre 90's point and click adventure games this is a real gem

this is as close as i could find to game play footage

here's all the insane fmv footage from it

and of course christopher lee tells us how to do the time warp

I also saw this movie too young, probably 10 or 11, but loved the music and throwbacks to old sci-fi B-movies. Great songs, great riffs, great Rock n Roll smileys with beer

The video game stuff is priceless. There certainly was no shortage of overmilking the film for a number of years.

It was the reason I sought out The Day The Earth Stood Still and so many other classics from Science Fiction! I loved the lyrics to the songs and it took years till I learned what many of them were in reference to.

My wife never saw it growing up, I told her whenever we had nothing better to do at midnight on a Saturday we'd stash a few beers in our socks under our bell bottom jeans and go see the movie, so she finally watched it with me (and I hadn't watched it in maybe 40 years).

She kind of sat there with a very confused look on her face for 90 minutes. :-)

I saw it in a cinema. It was a special kind of party there. People throwing rice, bags of water, etc. After every show they had to clean the place.

I saw the movie and also the play (not the 19 June 1973 show) many times. Can't believe it is more than 50 years old. What a smash!

Tim owned that role, but I can envision Mick pulling it off. He did eventually get to play a cross-gendered role

Thrill me, chill me, fulfill me

Regarding movies of this era and ilk, I much prefer Brian De Palma's genuinely horrifying Phantom of the Paradise.

Loved it from the very first minute. Bought the Sountrack LP (!!!), still have it. Watched it a couple of times, which was a joy every time.
Once attended a live "Rocky Horror Show" wearing lingerie, lipstick and makeup. THAT was real fun.

Happy Birthday, cult!
