Sister Morphine Bootleg Label Releases: Thoughts/opinions

Ok, so I’ve often wondered about these. I know they were cd-r’s so I stayed away from them for that reason. From what I’ve always seen here in the past they were generally considered to be quality releases. What I’m wondering is, for those who got them back in the day and still have them, how have the discs held up as far as data errors etc? I think they were made with the highest quality media but I’ve always stuck with factory pressed silvers for my boot collection. I’ve come across them occasionally and now am having second thoughts.

Any input?

Mine held up well. No problems at all. I loved the recordings and highly recommend this source.

SM were releases that were already available, compressed and EQ'd to death.

So, since these were all on cd-r, how can you tell if it’s an authentic Sister Morphine release?

But what is an authentic CDR copy with a xeroxed CD inlay?

Is there a release with Taylor on slide? I only know the Ry Cooder version, which is a masterpiece to me.

I have enjoyed these releases but the my copy of Tokyo Dome fell apart: the film where the data is stored on a CD-R flaked off.

For sure a xeroxed CD inlay is no help.

But CD-Rs carry Manufacturer Identification Code (MID) or Absolute Time In Pregroove (ATIP) code. I believe, those can be read by a CD drive on a computer (not on a CD player). ATIP provides the information about the manufacturer, writable or rewritable, dye type, reflective layer etc. Sometime an equivalent is printed/etched in 'laser-dot style' string on the hub of CD-R. I remember in the past there were many forums that allow you to track down CD-R and CD-RW by those codes. But CD-R guys are usually not in music but in games and storage. Thus, those forums were rather 'specific' and tech biased. Let me put it this way IFPI Mould SID codes and Mastering SID codes for silver CDs are better known to the collectors of music.

So, technically, it is possible to track down the manufacturer of the original CD-R if you know, for example, that the release was first burn to a gold CD-R in a year of 199x. But, please, do not ask me to do that CD-R archeology. I tried once and I did not like the process winking smiley.

I would like also to second your previous statement. Mastering of those SM released are a bit weird due to compressing and EQ-lization.

PS. No matter what they say, CD-R is not a reliable media. At least much less reliable compared to factory pressed CD (putting aside the early Nimbus UK and PDO UK, those a known for inappropriate technological conditions used). Sure, some CD-Rs could possibly store information for a prolonged periods of time but still... Organic dye that is used to burn the pits is not a long-term stable substance.

This thread is about the bootleg label, not the song.

Sorry. There could be a bootleg label with Taylor on slide? That's what I meant with my question.

Anyone else having a clue?

Not very likely someone could do better than Cooder. The song was released in 1971(?), when Taylor was a band member already.

They probably didn't even consider trying to improve the 1968 recording for Sticky Fingers.

There's an interview with Jimmy Miller and he was asked what he was most proud of. His answer was Sister Morphine, as he took a rather dull recording from the BB sessions, and added all the delay and echo to it himself, transforming it into this fantastic track. He took the finished track to Jagger whom loved it and put it on the record unchanged.

It sounds like Keith

I swapped out several SM releases over the years for different sources but the ones I kept have held up. I would not dump Gorgeous Girls for any of the other sources. But I cannot urge you to download it and try it because only part 2 shows in the lists by publisher. There must be official stuff on the first two disks. Some of the ones I kept and still prefer: Closer than Close, Unabrupt Dirty Work, Could You Walk on Water.

I hope you do not mind if I add a question. I have Cool coolhand remasters of Tattoo You and Exile. Anyone know? Were these Sister Morphine releases?

Cooder recording Sister Morphine on Keith's Gibson ES-330, also used for Honky Tonk Women.

There was a short recorded interview where he talked about Brian’s contributions to Beggars Banquet
