Newcastle UK 1971 - Melody Maker Article
Posted by: Christopher ()

This article may help clear up some of the unanswered questions about the show.

See here. It is a review of the 1971 show:

The article is from March 13th. Sticky Fingers was released on April 23rd. How would they know the names of the new songs before the album was released?

See below:

A new song follows, 'Can't You Hear Me Knockin'', fast and jumpy in the same vein as 'Jumpin' Jack Flash', marred only by some flat picking by Keith on his plexiglass model. His gutty tone makes way for Taylor's more refined approach. Jaggar retires for a moment to the sidelines, puts on his cap, and then turns to Jim Price, as if to say, "going all right, ennit." Another, very melodic, new cut, called 'Wild Horses', — "they couldn't drag me away" sweeps melodically in.

As far as Can't You Hear Me Knocking being played, I saw Mick Taylor at Cadogan Hall in 2012 and he said he never got to play it on stage with the Stones.
This was obviously before the Zip Code Tour. And also, maybe they did play it in Newcastle and he doesn't remember.

I think I wrote about the Cadogan Hall intro in that thread, too. But I didn't link to the video before (I don't think).

Hey!
Any chance someone with suitable access can CORRECT the "Subject" of this thread.

The location is not "New Castle" but "NEWCASTLE".

Thanks

I distincly remember a review in a UK music paper which mentioned the new songs played.

They definitely mentioned "Can't You hear me knocking", "Wild Horses" and also "You got to fix it" which is clearly Bitch, but the journalist obviously didn't know the correct title at the time of writing.

Maybe someone can locate the article?
I'm guessing it was either Melody Maker, NME or possibly Sounds.
I can't recall reading any other UK music papers from that era, but it's possible.

Didn't he confirm they played those at both newcastle and Manchester?

We do have an indication on how it sounded -there is a snippet of CYHMK from the Burbank rehearsals in 1972.

I'd have to double check, but maybe just "Wild Horses" more than once? I'm not sure.

I need to revisit that recording. I thought people said it was bogus.

Or this snippet of CYHMK.
Thanks.

If the Burbank rehearsals were anything like the rehearsals before the 1975 tour, then they played a TON of songs they ended up cutting out.

CYHMK: it sounds like there is an audience, or people are just hollering while watching. It also sounds like Keith/Mick singing together.

Hopefully the entire tape is eventually released. drinking smiley

I just read through the articles from Deltics.

It is clear that they played Wild Horses. And "take me down little Susie" is obviously Dead Flowers.

Still digging to find out about CYHMK.

I'll read a bit of Bill's book to see if he says anything about the concerts if anything.

Greenfield said they played it and Bobby Keys went into detail about playing it. I think there is an interview with Keys when he was in Nashville you can still find online.

If memory serves he mentions it in this article:

It's behind a pay-wall so I can't read it.

I distinctly remember a bit where Jagger was interviewed on the way back from Newcastle by train and he stated about CYHMK and WH something like 'well they can't all work out right', in response to the statement that the audience didn't react to the new songs.

There was also a bit about Taylor changing trains to one of the gigs, leaving his Gibson Les Paul behind on the platform, the reason why there are no pictures of it at Nellcote.

According to Bill Wyman, "The shows at Brighton, Liverpool, Leeds and London were recorded live on the eight-track Stones mobile studio, all by Glyn Johns, except London where Chris Kimsey did the honours. [...] A one-hour tape of the Leeds show was presented to Radio One's John Peel for broadcast on 30 May." (Rolling With The Stones, page 375)

That CYHMN snippet sounded very promising, fast, and with a punch. Lest's hope it will show up entirely sooner or later.

This book looks very interesting. Found one on eBay for $13 all in. Should have it in a few weeks.
