And the hits just keep on coming. If not on the Mt. Rushmore of rock and just popular music, definitely someone on that short list. To me, this is akin to losing Jagger, Richards, McCartney, Dylan, Neil Young at this point. A titan that unfortunately had such a sad life for awhile, but no one is like Brian Wilson. One of very few Beethoven or Mozarts in this modern time.
So sad to see this wonderful man leave us. What an exceptional talent he was, just brilliant. He was the heart of The Beach Boys. He will not be forgotten, so many of us still enjoy and marvel at his music to this day.
Very sad, and a such a terrible roll call of the absolute greats leaving us alone on this broiling mad planet - we will not see their likes again - lucky to have been passing through at the same time. I saw him twice, doing Smile, and other great stuff, I was so lucky....
The Wilsons were a few years before me, but they went to Hawthorne High and we played that school in sports. The hot car cruising route on Hawthorne Blvd to La Brea To Slauson to the Wich Stand (look it up)(The BB's wrote a song about it) and back went right through Inglewood. Those songs in the '60's defined our life as much as the air we breathed. They were not mythological fantasy, they described our reality. Their brilliance was taken for granted back then, but time has taken care of that. What strikes me about many of his songs is that they deal with finding your place in the world. Has anything really changed?
I’m, admittedly, not a fan of Pet Sounds. For me, it’s all about the surfing and car songs. Those early, Americana numbers like Fun, Fun Fun, and I Get Around. In the late 90’s, as a mid-teen, I would listen to a cheap, ‘supermarket cassette’ of their 1962-1965 hits.
I’ve known this was coming since he was placed under conservatorship, but it’s still a sad shock. A tortured genius, his body of work will live forever. Thank you, Brian
Man this is really sad news, and it's hit me hard. I really got into Brian Wilson around 2004 after seeing one of the legendary 'SMiLE' shows at the Royal Festival Hall in London. It blew my mind and I took a deep dive into the Beach Boys back catalogue and over the next 14 or 15 years managed to see Brian and his incredible band over 15 times. They were amazing nights of music which I will never forget.
Before I was even in Kindergarten yet, I can remember being in my parents basement listening to Endless Summer over and over and over again on 8-Track. Endless Summer, Some Girls and the soundtrack to The Buddy Holly Story were the soundtrack to my young life.
So many days (and nights!!) in my 20s in the early 2000s listening to Brian Wilson's genius music. Those amazing basslines, chords that shifted out of nowhere, the harmonies that touched your soul, and endless sugary hooks.
Last time I saw him play was in Scotland in about 2018, I went on my own, and just sat there in tears for most of the set, I was just so moved and felt so much love.
