1970 Tour
Date: June 9, 2025 06:16

I was reading on Wikipedia about this tour.

It says there is a soundboard recording of the Paris show.

Do we have a copy of this someone can share?

No live recordings of the tour have been officially released; there is only one known soundboard recording from Paris

Maybe this will come out of the vaults sometime. We can hope.

If there is anything, a release is absolutely warranted.

the paris recording that is around is from a radio broadcast and isn't exactly great sounding (personally i prefer some of the audience recordings from this tour)

but there are indeed unreleased and unleaked soundboard recordings from this tour that the stones made

we know this because there's a scene in the my life as a rolling stone documentary series from 2022 that pans across shelves in the stones vault and on those shelves are tape boxes marked as recordings of shows from 1970

now my memeory isn't parfect and i can't find the screenshoot of the boxes shared on iorr a few years ago but i'm certain one was marked hamburg 1970 and maybe berlin and paris as well

someone with a better memory could clarify exactly which ones

I'm sure there must be soundboard recordings. How about those rarely-discussed, commented upon, 1969 London theatre shows? Other than the set-lists, is much known about them?

There is a good soundboard of Sympathy For The Devil available (not complete).
So...they are out there somewhere.

At least all three Paris shows were recorded professionally, also the openers Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy & Junior Wells were recorded.

The main issue is that the Rolling Stones Mobile only started operating after the tour, so they didn't record all shows themselves.

I was there. Ticket says "Saville Theatre Dress Circle G 16". (Was it still owned by NEMS/Epstein at that stage?).

Main memory is how bl**dy steep the rake of the circle was. Jagger did berate us for not getting up and dancing, but it was so steep you'd have to be roped together like mountaineers to dance safely and not tumble down to your certain death.

There were actually four shows. 2 at the Saville Theatre on 14th December 1969 and 2 at the Lyceum Ballroom on 21st December 1969

It still astonishes me that the first of these shows on 14th December was only 8 days after the Altamont show.

Sudden announcement on the radio on a Sunday evening. Got to box office next morning to get tickets.

Well, for those who like a box-set, there's a pretty good release there, waiting!

Thank you for your recollection!

Actually, in the NME Special, published some years ago, I think it did mention Mick's 'berating' pf the audience. Well remembered.

with some of the tape boxes repeated on the bottom image

Blue Labels (Left and Right Sides)
Top left box:
"1972 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR"
"SAFETY COPY"
"16 Track"
"24/08/72"

Bottom right box:
"1972 NORTH AMERICAN TOUR"
"SAFETY COPY"
"16 Track"
"4CC"

Orange Labels (Center Boxes)
All orange-labeled boxes say:

"L 702887A1/4F"

"1970 LIVE"

"ORIGINAL"

"16 Track"

Dated: "24/08/70", "14/09/70", or similar

Handwritten Text on Boxes
One box reads:
“Florida 1st Show Pt. II”

One box vertically spells:
“ROLLING STONES”
(broken across two boxes: "ROLLING" and "ST")

Another box has:
“British and Show Mix”

One has a diamond drawing and “70”

Labels at the top on some boxes mention:
“R - S” (presumably Rolling Stones)
“Work Parts”
“First Show”
“3 of 4”, “4 of 4” etc.

It’s clear that these are original 16-track master tapes from The Rolling Stones, particularly from their 1970 live shows and 1972 North American Tour — likely extremely rare recordings.

The "Roll over Beethoven" versions played during the 1970 tour are rock and roll at its best.

That's a really important point.

Old reels of magnetic tape do degrade and the only real archival thing to do is to expertly digitise them and have many (geographically separated and physically secured) copies.

Do we have any evidence that The Rolling Stones are doing this?

i can't imagine this hasn't been done already

the amount of money they have and the vaule in these recordings

but if they haven't that's very distressing

Re: 1970 Tour

It's astonishing that these treasures have not been released to us, like, 20 years ago, or at least when the Bedspring Symphony had an official download. Even at ath lo-fidelity, the Palais performance is awesome.
The good news is that, tapes that predate 1973 used some kind of whale extract for superior adhesion, so they are in a better condition than post-1973 tape. Eddie Kramer told me that when interviewing him about the Hendrix Band of Gypsies boxed set when the whaling ban was enforced. The whale's role in preserving rock n roll...

All tapes owned by the Stones have been digitalized.

So its really easy for them to put them up on a download site and let us download it for a tenner each....

I red Ft Worth 2nd show, and 'Friday'.

Anything is possible of course, but I really doubt they would record the Hamburg 1970 show. We know they recorded all Paris shows, Berlin and Amsterdam pro-shot footage is partially available from the Huntley archives, so a professional soundboard could exist, but that's really it.

if it isn't a tape of the hamburg show why is it dated 14/9/70 on the box what else could it be?

I read it like 14/01/70 which doesn't make sense for a live show.

i can see that but it doesn't make sense it has to be 14/9/70

the only major thing they were doing in january 1970 was mixing ya-ya's according to nico's site

I don't know...all we 'know' is that the Paris shows were recorded professionaly and partially broadcasted, and that the Mobile truck was not yet up and running until after the tour. So chance of any other show being recorded on a 16-track are just really slim.

But then again, they did film parts of the Berlin and Amsterdam shows, and why would you do that if you would not record the audio as well? Even though they did film the Brussels 1973 first show partially professionally, but the sound has never showed up...
