The Rolling Stones Ronnie Wood Years

In lieu of Ronnie's 78th birthday on June first, the first day of meteorological summer for the northern hemisphere and hurricane season for the Atlantic basin, what songs stick out for his duration since 1976?

Due to Ronnie's duration with The Rolling Stones it's obvious for some people that there are more than the Taylor or Jones years.

I figure a limit of 20 tracks can suffice. In regard to his multi-instrumental talent there's no reason to limit anything he's ever done with TRS (studio albums) yet alone how limited his parts have been (1994 onward unless someone thinks otherwise).

In no particular order:

1. Shattered
2. Beast Of Burden
3. Crazy Mama
4. Hey Negrita
5. Terrifying
6. UOTN
7. RAAHP
8. Don't Stop
9. Out Of Tears
10. Dance
11. No Spare Parts
12. Faraway Eyes
13. Emotional Rescue
14. Summer Romance
15. Down In The Hole
16. She's So Cold
17. Pretty Beat Up
18. Tie You Up
19. Too Rude
20. Cook Cook Blues

I was just pondering this. How great Ron Wood was in the Faces, and what a force he was on the 75/76 tour. More like a guest star.
And IMO the '78 tour doesn't get near enough attention here. Maybe bc they never went to Europe. But that might be the best guitar playing by the guitars ever. It was as much Ronnie's album, as it was Keith's. The weaving was stellar. They were all in love with SG album, and their new songs.
Many here prefer the 81 tour. Keith's playing was off the chain, but by then they had pretty much cut Woody down.

I like your list Gaslightstreet. I am a Ronnie's fan too. I would add "Black Limousine" from Tattoo You. A little masterpiece by Woody; his credits are all over it and the rest of the Stones do an amazing job on it.

I like Ronnie a lot, but his irregular playing has often disappointed and annoyed me, to put it politely.

The Stones years with Taylor on record and live remain my reference.

Jagger's vocals weren't as good as 1973, and especially '72. IDK if he lost his voice early on or something. I also think Billy Preston was overexerting himself and coloring the sound too much. The horn section was absent as well, which personally I enjoyed.

In conclusion, I don't think it's really that those tours were bad (they weren't) it's just that they were sandwiched between the monster that was Euro 1973 and the punky Some Girls tours. It was a transitional period and it really sounds like it in retrospect. Doesn't mean it's not enjoyable, but the comparisons are always going to happen.

Ronnie B Good is really great throughout the Stripped era. I also like the sounds on Hurricane and Sweethearts Together. Faraway Eyes. Cancel Everything. Act Together. Toss in a little 1981 JJF...

I thought about that. Probably the better choice considering his slide playing.

I'm a little lazy so I don't know who plays what guitar part, however, I think that Slave should be on that list and yes, EITTG for sure.

But Too Rude? I feel like I don't know you anymore Skippy.

AND BTW, why nothing on HD?

Ronnie isn't on Slave.

He played drums on Too Rude.

I haven't heard anything that stands out on HD other than what he does on Dreamy Skies.

Is he on Tie You Up? I thought the rhythm guitar was Mick.

Wayne Perkins on Hand Of Fate, but Ronnie did good live versions in 1976/77.

Crap.

Ronnie's not on Hand Of Fate except for backing vocals and that is not worthy. Not sure why I thought he was. Another edit on the way.

Ronnie is on Tie You Up on rhythm guitar, the solo and bass. Perhaps Mick was on earlier versions but according to the two most reliable sources Mick does not play an instrument.

The solo is Keith. One of his best.

Yeah, I forgot about the bass.

Although capable of compiling a top-20 post-'74 list of favourite Rolling Stones recordings, I do not believe I can muster-up a list of the top-20 'Ronnie contributions' Is that what is required, here?

It occurred to me while tending to my jalapeno plants that Ronnie is an essential part of the 10 minute Whip Comes Down...treacle pointed out that song above

...and I'm all about Turning To Gold...

It's not about any previous guitarists in The Rolling Stones. There's plenty to choose from. Before They Make Me Run - Ronnie's pedal steel is excellent. Etc.

There is not one single note that Ronnie played with the Stones that I don't love, so this 20 song comp is impossible for me.

I'll start listing the first 10 that come to mind. Studio only.

1) IORR - The first. Keith redid everything save the acoustic. The acoustic is essential Ronnie strumming.

2) Negrita. The fantastic riff, and the even more fantastic bridge.

3) Miss You. Every single note is a masterpiece.

4) Some Girls. The runs in the instrumental breaks.

5) Shattered. The bridge.

6) Emotional rescue - The bass is everything a bass line shouldn't be, that is why it's so great

7) Start Me Up. The way he completes Keith's riffing is a matter of beauty.

8) Neighbors. The solo is what Rock and Roll is all about. How many strings does he bend on the first lick?

9) Black Limo. The intro lick must be included in the all times essential blues liks.

10) Beat Up. Simple riff, sexy timing. Masterpiece.

Ronnie is credited with slide on timeisonourside.com. Isn't Waddy's slide style somewhat different? I've always thought it was Ronnie, but you could be right.

Nice.

Ronnie's aspect is no less than Mick Taylor's. Different time(s), different band.

Ronnie's most vital time is, well, 1978-1983.

Since, he's done some beautiful playing (Out Of Tears, Don't Stop and loads of others) as well as fitting rolls (A BIGGER BANG). 13 albums, a few stand alone singles and of course, his up and down live performances.

How is it on Still Life they have 2 cover songs but not the fantastic Black Limo...at the time they were fine paying those royalties but nothing to Ron.

Hope he got a sandwich and a snack out of it at least. Maybe a juice box
