Stones and streaming services - how does it work?
Posted by: liddas ()

I have unlimited Spotify (for my daughters) and Apple Music (for me) accounts: two of the most popular streaming music providers.

If I browse in the Stones section, there are many things I don't understand.

Why the catalog is incomplete? Live Albums section is largely incomplete. No LA 75, no Hampton 81, no Leeds 82 just to name a few. They don't even have Hyde Park Live (which is available for purchase)

Why all UK/US versions, but no RS no. 2?

Why Mono box buried in the compilation section?

Why don't they take advance of the format and present all the extra stuff from the deluxe boxsets as stand alones (as they did for Brussels)?

Who curates the section? The stones or the provider?

I assume that the versions are the most recent published.

One plus is that the atmos versions is way less compressed than the CD counterpart

Rolling Stones No.2 is available on the U.K. Spotify. I have noticed, however, that some of the ‘archive’ ‘live releases’ are absent. I only assumed that they’ve been deleted from their catalogue. To be honest, otherwise, the Stones’ discography on Spotify seems satisfyingly complete to me. I’m certainly not missing anything, personally.

Why the catalog is incomplete?

Who curates the section?

Decisions by the record companies: ABKCO and Universal Music.

RS No.2: [Qobuz.com] , [HighResAudio.com] , [ProStudioMasters.com] , [www.HDtracks.com] , [Music.Apple.com] , [open.Spotify.com] .

No LA 75, no Hampton 81, no Leeds 82 just to name a few.

They're available digitally as films on Amazon Prime or AppleTV+ .

So it's Universal that decides not to publish Hampton 81, for example.

I just wonder why.

Do we know if the Stones have a word on how Universal distributes the music?

So it's Universal that decides not to publish Hampton 81, for example.

You could simply stream it via the film (minimise the video window). Or use the 2012 digital download or rip the 2014 CDs.

It is not a problem of availability: I have the CDs, vinyls and ripped HD files of almost everything. I was only curious to know why most of the stuff that was released in the past years was not made available of streaming services.

And I was interested in learning how things work today.

As I wrote above: decisions by the record companies. If a CD or LP is out-of-print (or not) is their decision. Same with streaming availability.

But there were (are) also artists who removed their music from streaming services due to protest against unfair artist payment and content devaluation.

Sometimes it's also a question of licensing: while the 3CD/4LP of HONK contain 'Beast of Burden (live featuring Ed Sheeran)' and 'Bitch (live featuring Dave Grohl)', they're not available via streaming.

All of the above is why I haven't taken to online music consumption.

If only you could routinely download and save all the music you want to buy in the best available quality and fidelity .

Streaming and downloading provision is a complete mess... especially for those of us who want real HiFi .

Seems like they're "juggling" a bit with the From The Vault and other recent live releases. Maybe it's a bit too much, having all the releases there. Hampton, Leeds, LA 75 and others used to be on Spotify.

RS No 2 is available on Spotify in Norway, so I don't know why they have geographical restrictions for that one.

My main problem with Spotify is the (mediocre) audio quality and the lack of Dolby Atmos support. I have a Spotify family subscription (€18 p/m) and the rest of the family is completely fine with that and they all have their playlists and such.

If I want to listen to the Stones in true HiFi audio or Atmos, I have to take another subscription on Apple Music for example (Both 40 licks and Tattoo You sound FANTASTIC in Dolby Atmos by the way), but the Stones catalogue on Apple is way smaller than on Spotify (only two Vault releases for example). And it costs another €11 per month.

Streaming and downloading provision is a complete mess... especially for those of us who want real HiFi .

But that's not true in this simplicity. For instance: TIDAL, Apple Music and Amazon Music have lossless HiRes streaming and also Dolby Atmos. Qobuz has lossless HiRes streaming/download (plus downloads in DSD). In North America, there're HDtracks and ProStudioMasters for HiRes downloads and in Europe there's HighResAudio (streaming & downloads).

Really? What's missing at [Music.Apple.com] vs. [open.Spotify.com] ?

Not strictly Rolling Stones, but Wingless Angels II is missing on Apple Music.

I don't think they're available anywhere, are they? Not unless you track down one of the long-deleted A Bigger Bang 'special edition' CD's, second-hand. Actually, I'm not entirely sure what they were released on, other than it was some sort of A Bigger Bang release.

I don't know if it is a regional thing, but on Apple Music I can't find Shine a Light (LIVE) - that should be an official live album . Grrr de luxe (the extras)

I don't know if all that was published on Rarities (which is missing) is covered by the 71/2006 singles box set.

I wonder why Sticky Fingers live and Hyde Park 2012 are available for purchase, but not on the streaming platform.

Slightly OT, but what I did is I uploaded uncompressed FLAC files of everything (cd rips, boots, downloads etc.) on my cloud service provider. I use Foobar for playback. It works just fine.

This doesn't count since it was only once released in 2005 on a special edition.

They seem currently 'out-of-print' - record company's respectively artist's decision.

Also the Ya Ya's bonus tracks were released on a special edition, yet are present.

I do not know which legal entity negotiated the distribution of the Stones catalog on streaming platforms, but I would love to know the details of the agreement. How the relation works.

And I still find it very strange that some officially released trax - which, by the way, already exist in digital format - are not available on streaming services - ok artist decision, but why? -.

Ya Ya's is ABKCO's catalogue.
