I only really know her name through the Fugess’ cover of Kiling Me Softley. It was a big hit during my first year of secondary school; that, and Michael Jackson’s Earth Song. Shame on me for not delving further, possibly.

Rest in peace, Roberta Flack

Yours was such a beautiful voice. Killing Me Softly is my fave song by you. Like many, I first came across you while watching Clint Eastwood's Play Misty For Me (a great movie) and your rendition of The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face. RIP Roberta.

I was surprised to learn that Killing Me Softly was written about Don McLean. Probably not the first name that would have come to my mind.

Since some weeks I'm working on my version of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face". It's one of the best love songs I know and it's one of the tunes that sound fantastic but not realy difficult. When I started working on it, I discovered it's not easy at all. So I have to work. Johnny Cash's version introduced me to the song but Roberta Flack is the one who made it famous. Her version is unreachable.
Give it a listen.
