I don't know, I guess I'm weird. I like late era Stones as much as any other era of the Stones. Undercover has to be one of the most overproduced records they've ever made and I still like it, so saying the amount of production was ruining the music doesn't make much sense to me. Hackney diamonds actually seems underproduced compared to an album like Undercover. And what is Satanic Majesty's but an ultra overproduced attempt at being timely and chasing trends? Seems strange to criticize The Rolling Stones for doing that now if that's something they've arguably been doing since the 1960s.

And I'm grateful to Andrew Watt for 1. Getting a good album finished, and 2. Insisting on a bare-bones blues track with just Mick & Keith.

We are on the same page...though I thought Steel Wheels sounded a bit cold. I like the songs though.

Weirdly I've always felt the sterile sound of Steel Wheels is kind a strength on some tracks like Hold On To Your Hat, which I always pictured was recorded in a CD clean room!

Yes, I too, feel that there is a 'coldness' to the sound of the album. It's very much a product of it's time; perfect for 1989. The songs are, for the most part, very good, though.

I've never understood why they haven't added CITADEL to their live canon. It's a great song in every way imho. As for the rest of TSMR, every criticism one can hurl at it is valid. And yet I really enjoy it, in large part because it's so evocative of its time. I feel transported to 1967.

Yes, TSMR for all it's flaws is an amazing time capsule. 50% of the album though is excellent, just different. Only a couple of clunkers, but even those fit in alright with the rest of the album. If they'd been able to add We Love You and Dandelion in there (and I know Child of the Moon came out too late, but COME ON!), and remove a couple of songs I would wager this would be regarded as an absolute psychedelic classic.

TSMR might be my favorite Stones album. I adore it. It's such a great album to listen to while chilling in the summer

As long as they're ongoing, which no one knows will stop, and considering how content is king, which, aside from the ridiculous amount of playlists they put on the crap app, it's known that they have enough for one more album.

They think so, anyway.

As much as they go on, the legacy of the past in regard to unreleased material continues to grow - but that will start to subside soon.

Although once they're done it might increase but if nothing happens in ABC amount of years... the No Jones No Stones fans will be either checked out or gone.

The Taylorites will have thinned.

One day UNDERCOVER will be viewed as "when things started to change" and viewed as quite old. Yeah, I know, it's over 40 years old.

Before you jump, I understand a lot of people feel that way regardless, the classic years are so far behind - but I'm talking about in 10 or 15 years, maybe 20.

After that, it won't be just the Stones that are ignored.

For now their catalog post-TATTOO YOU will remain in basic obscurity since nothing grand has happened post - Start Me Up/Waiting On A Friend.

Their history will be about "old men" and making loads of money from touring. Because even going back to U in 1983, record sales calmed at about just over 1 million per album world wide - yes, some exceptions, like VOODOO, with 6.5 million world wide, and BRIDGES, with a bit less, and touring probably helped, but in general, especially with far less releases compared to 1964-1981, with SOME GIRLS being the peak, BRIDGES was their last "big" seller world wide.

Sales are not what it is anymore. Streaming is. Even that is suspect, and, suspect aside, the numbers aren't A LOT.

So much for people thinking the Stones are trying to attract younger listeners by whatever they've done that they haven't actually done.

One day there will be a peak in interest, and the one other day.

And that will be it.

BV is right to find a shut down to this site: except for some straggling aspects, it's over.

John Lennon's bit was a tad... (You know, they're congratulating the Stones on being together 112 years. Whoopee!) but he was off by 40 something years.

GasLightStreet you make it all sound so depressing, to this day i still spend hours every week listening to the albums and live shows throughout their 60 years.
The Stones still make me happy, still make me high, they've probably given me more pleasure than anything else in my life, the Stones have been the constant ones when family and friends have parted.

I suppose i expect too much from 80 year old men, I'm too critical of their love of money and most of all I'm too critical in the fact that they have got old.

But they are still with us and they haven't stopped yet as a band, so anything is still possible but highly unlikely.

I think we have seen the last of them touring, you will all get Hackney Diamonds 2 and that will probably be it.
It feels depressing but a few years from now it will feel everything other than depressing because we realise we have all that lovely music they left us with.

Once they either call it a day or become unable to play we go beyond the disappointment and frustration of another tour that's exactly the same as all the others in recent decades, and beyond the disappointment of an album that isn't what you want from them.
You are left with an acceptance of all that they have done, as a whole body of creative work and performance in it's entirety, you stop comparing and wishing, you just enjoy.

We were so blessed with all the tours from 2012 on and yet, I wish for one more.

Re: What’s next for The Rolling Stones in 2025?

keefriffhards, you sum it up accurately, although my intent wasn't for what I said to be sad. It's simply a soon reality.

There's no quandary. No one has to wonder 'What if' with the Stones in regard to if they had stopped after REWIND, which for some might seem like a logical time, or 1989-90, etc, after Bill left.

Obviously 2019 for some since Charlie didn't play another live show.

Mick and Keith felt otherwise. Regardless of what they said in the past, now is not that past and they feel differently.

Maybe part of their longevity and fans' expectations revolves more along the line of why such a long break, twice, as well as why not shorter breaks so they're not always around (2012-2024) that, duh, MORE!!!

At least in regard to the digital age. The 1960s-1980s was (is) completely different because exposure/hype was once, with print ads and just like a live show - done and gone. They provided the occasional live album, live whatever (LADIES & GENTLEMEN, PPV) and that was it: they went away for your area for a while.

Since 1994, and more so obviously later, it's been more and more exposure and availability of whatever, especially live performances.

We're used to them going! They're approaching retirement and we still want, expect and demand more?

Sure. Because they keep going.

Forget the 'it's as good as' or 'it's not as good as' nattering of this and that new studio album, it's just that they've not stopped. Went years without a new album but, gee, another hits comp, another live album, another live video, ohhh, the vault.

Some fans wish for unreleased studio recordings, finished or not, or even in their original form before being finished, like how the 1972 version of Waiting On A Friend could've been included on the GHS deluxe (and why they didn't include Through The Lonely Nights is ridiculous) or Beatles type anthologies of the supposed finished studio recordings YouTube whatever recently.

Some are fine with what's been released deluxe wise and live wise: overall, a plethora of material.

The Stones themselves don't seem to be emotionally connected to what they've done but fans, ha ha... so when they do call it quits they'll be fine with it - they did it.

Until then... keep going.

I predict crypto.

To be released in redeemable certificates within the new album, or downloaded via a code. You have to buy the album to get the new Stones Crypto Currency, StonesCoin.

Album cover is a shot of severed bloody hand grasping a large metallic coin.

Album title is Crypto Fingers of course.

Hope a new album is coming, but I doubt they’ll call it Diamond Dust unless they’re specifically marketing HD outtakes as the concept which I think Jagger would not like. It’s like admitting “ our artistic well is dry” which I don’t believe is the case

Yeah, it certainly won’t be marketed as an ‘outtakes album’ IMO, if there’s any ‘near certainties’ regarding the Stones’ near-future activities, it’s that we will get another studio album. The fact that it’s been mooted by Jagger, himself, makes me think believe this will happen. A tour? If I were a betting man, yes; but let’s wait and see.
