Always good to hear the boys are back in the studio. Hoping for Hackney Part 2

I hope it's another blues album or a new project with country or soul or whatever covers.
I don't want an album of completely new songs at all.
It would be better if they only released their own songs as singles (or EPs) occasionally and only the really good ones.
I only listen to 3-4 songs from Hackney Diamonds but I listen to Blue & Lonesome and Living In A Ghost Town quite a lot.

So you prefer a cover album over an original album? Now that's weird...

The Rolling Stones are really good at covers, and they can release some good songs, too but their albums are mediocre at least since the mid-eighties.

Of course VL and BTB are great, but it's hard to believe you're listening to HD or ABB to death.

I agree. I have no hesitation in saying another covers album - blues, soul, country, whatever - appeals to me. Also agree that their own self-written albums have been very very ordinary for quite some time. Had they been written and recorded by anyone else I doubt they would have been given a second thought or a proper review by anyone. Or achieved any kind of sizeable sale...

I do agree, that is a bit strange.
I must admit, I do feel a slight pang of pity when I read on this forum that some people haven't fully embraced Hackney Diamonds - to my ears, it really is a modern day diamond (excuse the pun). To want another Blue And Lonesome is crazy to me - I enjoy it for 2-3 songs and then I can't take anymore. It's just all too samey.
But hey - each to their own, and we're all great!

Huh.

VOODOO is pedestrian at best. 90% lackluster imitation of The Rolling Stones. It's way too long, too. The 3 B-sides would've been better on the album.

BRIDGES is like reading a seismograph - some really good songs here, some really bad songs there and a few in the middle. At least they were, finally, advantageous with what they were doing, much like they were for UNDERCOVER.

I'd be impressed if anyone is listening to ABB "to death".

As usual, with exception to TATTOO YOU, which wasn't recorded for, better songs were left off of those three albums.

Were better songs left off of HD? We'll find out, hopefully. In the meantime, for me, HD is still getting played the most of all Stones albums because it really is that good. It's ageless.

I do love all the whispers and hopes and dreams and wishes - and even optimism - about The Stones working on and on in defiance of age to (a) create a 'new' album, (b) burnish and upgrade an old album (Black&Blue?) and (c) doing another tour in 2026. Piece of cake. Mick and Keith will be only 82 by then. I mean come on - mere kids. Although - spoiler alert - Mick might be 83 if the tour is in late summer. And if it is late summer 2026 Ronnie will be 79, although only 78 if it is in sprintime.

Lets just suppose what would happen if all this actually comes to pass. Another jaunt around the US? Followed by another jaunt around Europe in early 2027? A few dozen more outings for the best known setlist in rock. An avalanche of sycophantic praise and adulation for their ability to stand upright and actually play. Hundreds - maybe even thousands - of postings about how well they 'nailed it'. How they still 'have it'. How it proves they are still the greatest band in the world.

I have no idea whatsoever what they will do. Or won't do. About what the many supposed 'leaks' tell us, or don't tell us. How accurate, or otherwise, the various sightings of band members in proximity to various recording studios might actually be. Or indeed what any kind of performing schedule might look like. Would it bear any kind of resemblance to what has happened before? Maybe 20 or so gigs stretched over three months? Or some sort of residency? Or something so new and revolutionary we could never guess it in a thousand years until it is all unvelied to an expectant world?

One can never say definitively what The Stones will, or wont, do. They, and only they, will decide, They will be subject to one external force only. Age, together with its close relative, health. Even The Stones cannot defy those forever. They have made great attempts to do so over many years. And succeeded too. But every year that goes by steepens the climb and reduces the footholds...

Count me in the HD part deux over another blues covers album.

But I don't think another blues album is even on the radar, given they said 18 months ago that another new album is 3/4s done.

Gerard, I think we all know they're old. You don't have to remind people. Sorry if you dislike the work they still do but many others are happy with it.

Re: What’s next for The Rolling Stones in 2025?

I remember purchasing a book called "The Last Tour" after the 1981 tour.

Something I do not understand is why the "age" issue keeps coming up over and over.

Ok, so they are old for rock stars, but they still produce better music and stage performances than most of the bands.

Whatever they finish recording - or record - it won't be a 'new' album, it will be a new album.

You say it that way as if because the recordings are a couple years old it's not a new album. So that means pretty much every album through IORR wasn't new, because BAB was new and SG was new - but ER and U weren't 100% new.

It changes after that to everything being new.

Speaking of BLACK AND BLUE... hopefully the bonus material isn't brickwalled because the album will be no matter what (it won't be a new remaster, no need - they were ruined in 2009).

Touring in 2026? Currently, this 13th day of spring in 2025, things are going bonkers in ways that, this is just a guess, might cost insane prices to build stages, making a tour financially impossible, if things stay bonkers or get worse.

If they tour the US next year and they come around where I am I will probably go. If it isn't a mortgage payment.

And let’s not forget that Blue & Lonesome was a sort-of compromise. They had to release ‘something’ after ‘hitting a wall’ during the recording of ‘new tracks’ I’m not sure that Mick would’ve recorded a ‘blues-covers’ album out of choice, if Jagger-Richards originals were ready to go. In hindsight, Blue & Lonesome is a little underwhelming. Like others, I was too tied-up in my eagerness for ‘any kind’ of ‘new recordings’ to think beyond this at the time.

They could make an album of blues or cover versions later on, when they're no longer touring due to age, but refuse to just sit at home.

Did they not already make clear that they recorded another album’s worth of material during the Hackney sessions? Would they not be simply polishing that up for release?

Agreed. B&L will be a one-off curio in the ensuing years whereas the new material albums, HD and hopefully as well the one they're working on, will be their fantastic one-two punch at the twilight of their career.

It wasn't a full album, only 66% - 75%, depending on the interview.

23 tracks - Pos. 4:03 , transcript: [iorr.org] .

two-thirds - Pos. 26:41 (Q with Tom Power)

three-quarters - [NYTimes.com] , [iorr.org] .

I agree. HD is an album I always come back to now and then and always positively suprised, something I can’t say about ABB or Voodoo Lounge. And since HD is such a diverse album there must be something for everyone on it.

I don’t get the wish for covers. If I want to listen to blues I put on some Muddy Waters, Little Walter, B.B. King etc. If I want to listen to Motown I put on the temptations or Four Tops. But why the need for Stones covers of that music? In the end it’s just some white dudes playing black music, and no matter how good it is I always prefer the originals.

you know i love all the originals too but sometimes the stones just did it better or in an intersting new way

to many of us they will always be a blues band and always sound best when there playing it and that's why many of us want another blue and lonesome

that's not to say i don't prefer a new album of original songs i do

it's just that i would't exaclty turn my nose up at a new blues album either

I saw a photo of a stones truck before a studio on facebook. Seemed legit. And Doug is ofcourse legit. So I would not worry about this.

Hackney Diamonds was fantastic. It would be a great last album. But it also showed they have more in the tank so I am confident they will suprise us again if there will be another album.

It’s funny. I listened to Hackney Diamonds again last night, and I can’t figure out how a Stones fan could be interested in that. In my humble opinion it is the weakest album of the band. Some bridges or choruses sound good artificial intelligence. It seems that the band played very little in the same room and that Keith’s guitar was made with a synthesizer. I’m not talking about the weakness of the compositions...
You will understand that I am not very excited by the "new music" and disappointed that the band is not on stage.
