Great calls on the thread:

J. Geils
Three Dog Night.

Better than any group on current list.

Soundgarden is king, especially on the HOF list.

J Geils is awesome, not disagreeing. Three Dog is good. Neither were really Earth moving, though.

Why Oasis is on the list is bizarre.

Is Phish rock'n'roll? Kinda?

Cyndi Lauper? Well, compared to Mariah Carey, yes.

Outkast - love 'em but... no.

Joy Division + New Order: Goth godfathers? Absolutely.

Seeing what a joke the RNRHOF is. Oops. They don't even spell it correctly. RARHOF.

It is extremely entertaining that it's in the most forgotten Northeast city in the history of the United States.

What's bizarre about Oasis?

I assume the Oasis boom rubbed many the wrong way. Overexposure, too familiar of a sound to the Beatles, being @#$%& as people. Having said that, they made an impact on music that few artists do. Whether you like them or not, they were a movement, and it would be bizarre for them NOT to be on the list. It would be active rejection, which is what the Hall did to Black Sabbath, KISS, Rush, and Deep Purple for many years. And what they are still doing to Iron Maiden. It would be as wrong to purposefully ignore a band like Oasis as it would be to induct Mariah Carey into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

The R&R Hall of Fame is an American institution. It's main focus is, of course, American artists. Very few non-American acts makes it to the list.
To make it to the list the artist need to have made it big in the U.S. market as well. The rest of the world is of no importance.

Tears For Fears were much better at imitating The Beatles and it was for only one song.

At least Oasis made Street Fighting Man their own. They don't sound like the Beatles or Stones. Most of the time they sound like aggravated spoilt Beatles wannabes minus good songwriting and singing. They have all this attitude and yet play things that sound like really poor interpretations of The Long And Winding Road or some other piano Beatles ballad. Or... John Lennon without meaning.

Bad Company over Joe Cocker and Chubby Checker and beating Cyndi in the top 5 is @#$%& wild. B Tier MOR band with a phenomenal vocalist over a Woodstock icon, an early rock trendsetter who should have been in the 1980s’, and a New Wave icon whose imprint on pop is still felt today is completely ridiculous.

I like how they do this thing: "52 years of hits", "46 years of touring". They aren't like the Stones who have stayed super active. They basically were active for like a decade and have lived off that, so they are very liberal with those proclamations like they've had hits and success in every decade for 50 years.

Hey - it's one thing for someone to say they don't like Oasis etc but this going on about how one is a better parent or whatever - that's beyond the subject matter.

If there was internet in the 1970s would people be chirping about Mick Jagger's behavior with Marsha Hunt and Billy down at the pub is a better parent? Liam's baby mama is after him again.

So what.

Yes if this place existed then people absolutely would.

Am I crazy? sad? bad? stupid? silly? because I don't give a rats ass about the RnRHOF? I mean I don't even know which city? town? village? state? it is actually IN!

Until right now I don't think I have ever even thought about the institution. Does it exist in an actual building? Or is it a virtual entity? Does somebody run it? Or is it powered up from somewhere like Beacon 23 way way out in space...???

Please do not quote endlessly. A maximum of 2-3 quotes is recommended, above that will be deleted, as it is just a few persons having an argument.

Watching that interview with Simon Kirke, I thought, wow, how old is he, looks pretty young, like mid-forties, ok, maybe mid-fities.

He's 75. Them's some good genes, or great zoom filter.

Good to see this thread is open again. It's an important subject. Something we all love. Some of us have strong opinions about who they like and don't like. Funny but I used to hate Oasis myself. Later I turned into liking them. But I'm going to stand my ground and say no Mariah Carey please.winking smiley

I think there are many here that post that are more knowledgeable then Stern.

There are so many common people with encyclopedia type history knowledge of music.

How about a music history test for voters?

Thank you. I'm delighted to hear I'm being stupid because of my disdain/indifference/apathy towards the RnRHOF. The very fact that certain performers have been short-listed for an award tells me the entire concept is completely irrelevant. So if I am stupid by rejecting it then I must still retain some kind of genuine rock'n'roll attitude...

Yay!

I agree 100% with Mr Stern. Oasis, Bad Company and Black Crowes are amazing Rock n Roll bands and Outkast's split CD in 2003 inspired a whole music world and made at least me believe in new music plus Miss Jackson was a helluva tune. Cocker is of course a no brainer and I think Soundgarden was the best band along with Nirvana to come out of the grunge wave. My former employee bought Cindy Lauper's back catalogue so I guess she must've done something right.

Rock N Roll Hall of Fame is a great place, I was there in 2005 and I loved it as well as Cleveland, charming City with the view over Lake Erie and its beautiful surroundings. Great micro breweries (at least then) and Brown's Stadium is a classic landmark together with R n R Hall of Fame's pyramid.

While fan polls do contribute to Rock Hall of Fame selections, they don't guarantee induction and are considered just one factor among many, with the "fan ballot" created from the top vote-getters carrying the same weight as other ballots cast by the voting body, meaning a high fan vote doesn't automatically secure an artist's place in the Hall of Fame; it is still largely decided by the industry voters.

Key points about fan polls and the Rock Hall:

Fan vote weight: The top five artists voted by fans are compiled into a "fan ballot" which is considered alongside the other ballots cast by the voting panel.
Not a guarantee: Even if an artist wins the fan vote, they may not be inducted.
Impact on consideration: A strong fan vote can still bring attention to an artist and potentially influence the voting body's decision.
