A switch of roster may mean planning for possible new Stones studio album
Date: December 18, 2024 11:12

I had a chat with Rocky Dijon yesterday. Unfortunately, he has trouble logging into IORR right now, but he asked me to post the info he came over, regarding labels within the Universal tree and a possible new studio album.

Here's the news from Rocky:

«In North America, Universal put HACKNEY DIAMONDS out on Geffen Records whereas Interscope handled all previous UME releases with the exception of the Live Archives which were through Eagle and then Mercury.

Geffen announced in late 2022 that The Stones moved to their roster from Interscope. In November of this year, the Stones were moved from Geffen to the reactivated A&M Records roster indicating a release is expected in 2025.

Since Interscope, Geffen and A&M are branches of the same tree for UMG, the decision to assign an artist to a particular division is to allocate resources for marketing and distribution. I'll take this as our first positive sign a release is planned. It would be great if it were in time for the European tour, but likely they'll aim for the Christmas market again.»

Hopefully it will be new album.

Great news indeed.

The only quibble on the marketing (and maybe that'll improve with a label switch?) was that after the great video for Angry, they missed doing a video entirely for SSoH (which would have been unbelievable had they included Stevie & Gaga - a lyric video doesn't count for this), and then a lame "story" video for Mess It Up that didn't include the band (or a physical release of the single).

Maybe the album just wasn't going to sell regardless but after the great promo launch and that executive coming out and saying they had an 18 month plan you didn't seem much marketing after Christmas.

I see. In that case the plausible release date for a HD 2 would be when the, possible, Europe tour starts in 2025 then? June 2025?

For this, the recordings for the new album would have to be completed this month. But there was no hint of studio time.

Maybe a release end of 2025 and then a Tour Asia/Oceania early 2026 with additional new material.

And what about that HD documentary that was supposed to come out?

There could be a new chance for that with the new studio album.

I see. You know more than me here. The thing is though: They can't afford postponing things year by year anymore. They need to work within a month by month schedule...

Yeah.

The hype last fall was unbelievable and then post Christmas 2023 it shifted to the tour and everything else seemed to have been neglected. I don't quite get what happened.

I know nothing, it's just a consideration in time frames. They could finish the recordings in early 2025, after that rehearsing for the tour and then go on tour, e.g. May-August 2025. While they're on tour, the record company does mixing/mastering, the marketing stuff, CD/Vinyl manufacturing, etc. The new album could be out then for Xmas 2025.

and maybe a new single released at the beginning of the tour so they have something new to perform

i'd love that but would they really go thru the trouble that rocky describes just to release and promote a collection of finished off outtakes from 30-40 years ago that likely will only sell slightly better then there other archive releases?

With the 1st anniversary edition of Hackney Diamonds, the 2025 tour seems to be still about the Hackney Diamonds album. Then there were complaints by fans that not enough songs from Hackney Diamonds were played during the 2024 tour. A new single from a forthcoming album would then mean less Hackney Diamonds.

There was an actress, can't remember her name, posting photos from some Stones video shoot somewhere in South America, no? This was after all known HD videos had been released. So it was either shelved or for the new album

Yeah, what was the rest of that 18 month plan? Last thing I remember what the HD live edition. Nothing after that except for some special Vinyl.

Yes! I wondered what had happened with that. Rumours at the time was that is was for a video for Whole Wide World. I forget who the actress was now, but it was a famous one!

Maybe it was before Mess It Up was released then. Can't find any posts about it. Maybe it was posted here or on shidoobie, could not find anything there either.

No, it was definitely after Mess It Up as I remember specific talk of a fourth single. Wish I could remember who the actress was - I can't be arsed to search through threads sad smiley

That's odd, right? They seemed so geared up about the leftovers for the next album.

Why not? Unlike what's been done with the deluxe reissues, the work was finished years ago and they didn't include anything with the VOODOO not-so-deluxe which is criminal since there was so much leftover material.

It really is bizarre. All that talk that there was so much that was going to happen. The third single was released the day of the LP. Nothing at all near the time of the tour.

Used to be the first single was released a week or three weeks ahead of the LP. Angry was released six weeks before the album came out!!!

i guess no reason not now that i think about it

but one would think the kind of effort universals putting into this it must be a pretty big release and all i could think of that they'd put those resources towards would be a new studio album

but they really have been all over the map when it comes promoting there archive releases over the years

from basically barely promoting or acknowledging them to full on media blitzkriegs on talks shows and live performances

so who knows it be great to finally get the memory hotel project released (hopefully with lots of uncircultated outtakes) and i know the new album is in the works regardless

perhaps the albums planned for 2026 or maybe they'll do both this year

I can't think of anything quite so lame as to have a One Year Anniversary special Hackney Diamonds release on splatter vinyl. That is just so lame, particularly after the 40 plus vinyl versions released only a year earlier.

Yeah I know it had the Racket performance but they already released that on vinyl and on the CD package.

Too bad they didn't do a 'hackney diamonds' vinyl, clear with "shards" in it. UMG really missed it on that one. Maybe for the 2 year anniversary...
