Why didn’t Giles Martin mix Black and Blue

Because Steven Wilson is new hot guy in town.

No - Steven Wilson does his remixes already since 2009, it started with the 1969 album 'In the Court of the Crimson King' by King Crimson - [Amazon.co.uk] , [SoundOnSound.com] .

On another YouTube video of the same performance, it's said that this Fool to Cry comes from the night Keith found out about his son's cot death. Which is heavy. It's great playing. They're sweating buckets. Are these videos a mix of different nights there, or just the one?

Don't know anything about what show the video is from but the day of the first of four shows his son died.

He found out on the eve of the 6th of June, hence that performance was used for LYL. As I remember they played Paris on the 4th, 5th 6th and 7th so the third Paris show was the red hot one. The Les Abbatoirs bootleg DVD got the whole 7th of June + around 10 trax from the 6th and this official version is probably from the 6th.

ABB songs just aren't that good - not so well crafted in terms of middle 8s, bridges, interesting interludes etc.

As far as I am concerned, the best Stones songs were never about interesting interludes, middle 8's and bridges. Their best songs are about a simple groove, maybe a few breaks, a short solo, but basically few chords and little melody.
That's what I don't like about HD: it's textbook pop-songwriting, with all that pop-stuff you mention.
I wouldn't want to see Andrew Watt near any of their albums. Thank goodness he wasn't around when they recorded Exile.

+1

Although Let Me Down Real Slow has got a really cool "descending" guitar line in some sort of a Middle 8 that works real well me thinks

Re: Black and Blue 2025

If the song is good, it will be good with and without middle eights and bridges.

The instrumental bridges in BTMMR, for instance, are great. Same with the instrumental breaks in Shattered and Hey Negrita. The latter is fantastic (and very Ronnie).

Actually I have a Gerry and the Pacemakers set on my Xmas list. "I Like It: Anthology 1963-1966" 3 cd's with a live concert on one CD.

Look into that. I could be wrong. I never have never shared anything here to be wrong to prove a point.

I have no idea why I said "hence that"... maybe Keith's playing was better, I dunno. Maybe I read something that Keith said about that night/show and saw/listened and came to a similar/same conclusion.

I read what you quoted and thought, When did I say that? I have no idea, I didn't look.

Is what I said accurate? Probably.

There's obviously ways of finding that out, period. I'm going to guess it is because I did some digging but I can't recall right now.

Listening to the Virgin Records BLACK AND BLUE. It's a very interesting album.

It's the last album that had the rounding rumbling drum fills that Charlie did that actually BOOM BOOM the listening space.

Something drastically changed after 1976 in regard to how albums were mixed and mastered.

Hot Stuff thumps. It carries. It has a fog to it that sticks.

Play Hey Negrita loud enough and your room moves. It has ass. The volume reveals just how good the guitars are.

There's nothing like it on SOME GIRLS.

Melody is amazing.

Listen to EMOTIONAL RESCUE's guitars - She's So Cold is astounding in the mix with the guitars. Down In The Hole. Dance. Summer Romance. A lot of fantastic guitar playing on that album. They took the mix and blend of SG and added and that is ER.

Volume - or headphones, another great way to listen to music - reveals how much is going on in Fool To Cry. There's a lot going on under it within it, something that wouldn't happen again until UNDERCOVER.

BLACK AND BLUE is absolutely a fantastic album.

TATTOO YOU is of like, obviously because of Slave and Worried About You, but TY, aside nothing from SOME GIRLS onward, really has that rumbly thump that BAB has. Part of the reason why so many love TY. No album has had that acoustic ass to it since.

ER and U have moments of some low end but it's a tight low end - there's no rumble, more of a thump, something SOME GIRLS doesn't have.

BAB has a rounded timbre to it that is sonically across - BAB reads the room.

Imagine sitting in a room with STICKY FINGERS through UNDERCOVER playing just loud enough, straight through, and realizing that BLACK AND BLUE and TATTOO YOU are the best sounding albums.

SF, EOMS, GHS and, IORR and ER have some moments of sonic clarity but they don't compare to BAB and TY.

Hopefully we're in for a treat with the remix - if the mastering hasn't destroyed its essence.

I like Gerry & The Pacemakers' trilogy of #1's: How Do You Do It; I Like It, and You'll Never Walk Alone. Ferry Across the Mersey is a nice tune, too. Gerry Marsden had a strong voice.

Freddie and The Dreamers, though? Oh, dear!

Curious to what anyone thinks: strange that the bizarre cover song, then the new Hot Stuff remix and then two live tracks were released... instead of something a bit more familiar, like the single edit of Fool To Cry - the edited LP remix, obviously, which the single version is just an edit of the LP version.

Someone is asleep.

Low-res (but still readable) Uncut review

Same on [PressReader.com] - page 41 .

"Available in 5LP vinyl and 4CD iterations, each augmented by a Blu-ray disc and a handsome 100-page book, this deluxe box careens through the period in suitably chaotic style. A disc of unreleased recordings sees the Jagger and Wood of 2025 continue the habit of recent Stones reissues by returning to two unfinished tracks fron the vaults and sacrilegiously/brilliantly scrawling new parts over them. A ramshackle cover of Shirley & Company's 'Shame, Shame, Shame' would have finished the disco-haters off in 1976, while 'I Love Ladies' is an airy, West Coast sigh, equally fabulous and ludicrous. Time-travelling through both, the 82-year-old Jagger is in full falsetto, fully ridiculous, brilliant and vibrating with energy that bodes well for the next Stones album. The remaining unissued pieces are instrumentals from the guitar 'auditions', much bootlegged, now uncovered in pristine fidelity. 'Chuck Berry style Jam' sees Harvey Mandel motor along on a self-explanatory chug. Three tracks showcase Jeff Beck's short-lived Stones stint: 'Blues Jam' is as uneventful as its title, but 'Freeway Jam' is a rougher thing than Beck's own tune of that title, and 'Rotterdam Jam' is a frenetic groove that suggests James Brown disciplining Can, just waiting for its Scorsese cocaine paranoia sequence. Two live discs document a regally ragged night from London's Earls Court in May 1976, while, on the Blu-ray, a lost TV broadcast shot at Les Abattoirs in Paris presents the visual spectacle: Keith in full sweat-o-rama, Mick somewhere between Louis XIV and a satin Afghan hound. It's the first disc, though, that will prove divisive today, as Black And Blue undergoes a new remix from Steven Wilson. For the most, it's sympathetic and subtly revelatory. Wilson doesn't change the architecture, yet widens the space, letting Bill Wyman's bass roam, shifting spotlights to pick out new details in keyboard and percussion. It doesn't 'clean it up', but it lets the dirt really glimmer. However, there is one near unforgivable gaffe: on 'Hot Stuff', around 2 mins 50, just as Mick comes back after Keith's scribbling wah-wah solo, the new mix inexplicably omits the word 'Hot', hitting us only with a mighty '-Stuff!' It's so glaring it leaves you wondering if it was deliberate - but it also leaves you certain that, great as this set is, you'll be hanging onto the old album too."

"Between takes in the studio, the Stones would often drift into jam sessions and long improvisations - nothing planned, just spontaneous.
Moments like these helped shape Black and Blue - including this previously unreleased Chuck Berry Style Jam, featured on the new reissue, out next Friday Nov 14."

Question is are they going back and replacing all stock? Or are those of us who preordered gonna be expected to contact Universal or whoever to get replacement copies? I sure hope not the latter. Had to go through all that for replacement discs in the Tokyo 90 set (reverse channels) and also the 45x5 singles set (Think I’m Going Mad glitch). What a hassle. Come on guys! Fire the whole damn Q.C. department and just hire one guy with headphones to sit and listen to these before a single pressing is made. This ain’t Rocket Science we’re talking about here!

Well, they moved the release date for some editions. So, probably, for those CDs will be replaced. But asking for replacement is not too much troubles.
